Placement Lists Should Not be Released

Post by The Drifter » Tue Aug 04, 2009 2:13 pm

According to the placement team:

--------------------------------------------------

Below is a link to the list of placed camps, their approximate
locations,
the space allotted, and the name of their placer.

THIS IS INTENDED AS A PRIVATE LINK FOR JUST THEME CAMPS.
ONLY YOU ARE BEING DIRECTED TO IT.

SOME CAMPS ON THIS LIST HAVE REQUESTED NOT TO BE LISTED
ON OUR WEBSITE CAMP LISTING, THE BRC MAP, AND OTHER MEDIA.

PLEASE RESPECT THE WISHES OF YOUR FELLOW THEME CAMPS
AND DO NOT REPOST THIS LIST ELSEWHERE.

Read all the information below first. It will save you some stress and
us
some email correspondence.

1. The map is final. We try very hard to please everyone and we read
your questionnaires carefully. If you let us know what you wanted in
your questionnaire we did our best to give it to you. If you
requested Esplanade and did not get it, it was because others were
more needy or deserving. If you did not request Esplanade and did get
it, it was because you really needed or deserved it or you are
TERRIFIC at filling out our questionnaire! If you freak out when you
find out where you are located, take a deep breath, study the blurbs
on the web site of the other camps near you and contact some of them.
There is often a method to our madness.

2. If you were placed somewhere different than your preferences,
we're sorry, some areas are more popular than others, so they
fill up sooner. If you were placed somewhere different than your
preferences, the alternative we often faced was not placing you
at all.

3. At Burning Man no one "owns" real estate. We create our city anew
every year to keep it fresh and vital. You will find that like-minded
camps and themes are placed together to create districts and
neighborhoods.

4. When looking at your space allotment the first street indicated is
your frontage. The second is the one you are nearest to or on the
corner of. Look at the dimensions (e.g. 50' x 100') to envision your
shape and size. The first number is the frontage of your camp. The
second number is the depth. These sizes are approximate! They are not
exact. Do not expect to come in with a measuring tape and find the
exact space. (We hate that). Eh, it may be a bit more or it may be a
bit less.

a. Camps within villages do not have individualized space allotments,
as your layout was incorporated into the larger village plan of your
village.

b. If you see a (+) or a (-), your camp is an irregular shape with
additional space added to it or subtracted from it.

5. If you are the inside of Center Camp or in a Plaza there will be an
additional time associated with your location. (e.g. "4:30 Plaza at
4:00")
This time indicates your frontage position on the circular space, if you
imagine a clock face with 12:00 pointing to the Man.

b. An address on"Evolution" refers to the outer ring road around Center
Camp

c. A "portal" address refers to the V-shaped openings from the inner
playa
into our city plazas and avenues at 3:00, 4:30, 6:00, 7:30 & 9:00.

6. Some of you did not get the size space you requested. Some
requests were for the maximum allotment or for something way over what
seemed to be needed by what you described in your questionnaire. This
left us with the task of deciding a realistic space for you. We only
have the information you have provided us to work with. If your map
did not have dimensions --- and many did not --- we were left to guess.
We carefully reviewed how many people were listed in each camp and
how much additional "stuff" your questionnaire indicated you were
bringing
to allocate your space.

7. Your address is NOT exact. It only gives you an approximate idea
of where you will be living. I know many of you hate this, but we
have to do this for two main reasons:

a.) We need you to allow us to place you. It is not as easy as it
seems to find your placement and understand the flagging system. We
hate to move you after you have already begun to set up.

b.) Placement will continue to change as people arrive and we need to
have some flexibility with your exact spot. When an unexpected problem
arises, we can sometimes accommodate you without inconveniencing
anyone else. We gently shuffle this and that and that and this and can
sometimes work miracles without changing other camp addresses.

8. You will find a placer's playa name listed after your camp size. Your
placer will be available to assist you pre-event and on the playa.
Expect an email from them shortly. They can answer questions, let you
know if you are on a corner, etc., but ask your questions of them SOON
because we will be packing it up to leave shortly!

9. Keep reading your placement announcements. The most important to
come this year will be letting you know the process for arriving in
Black Rock City and key information about being a placed camp.

10. A map of the city with street names is here:

http://www.burningman.com/preparation/maps/09_maps/

Thanks everyone! It is going to be a great year!

This is not new.

Despite the request from the placement team, the list page was already crawled by all the search engine bots. If you wanted to find it yourself you only need to search a few camp names that were placed and it will show up in Google.

Privacy or security through obscurity seldom works on indexed web pages.

If they really wanted it to be private, they could post a bitmap of the list and use a less predictable URL.

That's true of course but we should at least try to respect their wishes. It's not new? This email was just sent out like an hour ago. I'm always behind the times......

There are already enough threads and discussions going that to pull them would be ... work, and a lot of it with backlash. Plus, the list is all over tribe and facebook and well, the whole interweb. Too late. You try shoving the cat back into the bag.

If they really didn't want it out, they'd carefully send each camp their coordinates and release the list later. Anyone who expects that list to be set in stone hasn't caught on to the way playadipity warps reality.

As Token said, not new. This happens annually. That's why I am not sweating it.

Nope. The URL is exactly the same as last year - just change the 8 for a 9.

And last year's list never went away. So let's say you found it after the fact and made the connection. There's this year's list without being given a link.
Just sayin'.

I posted it first, but I think Shambala deleted it as soon as i did.
We have an obligation to make space for everyone, we have no obligation to make that space pleasant.

Perhaps I am just easily amazed...but why would they put something that's supposed to be kept secret on a completely public forum called The INTERNET, AKA WORLD WIDE WEB (without even need for a password?)

I was googling a specific camp and randomly ran across the placement list link. I don't call that a CONFIDENTIAL list!!!!

Silly, just.....silly.

Really? Oh gesh... A public URL is no way to keep a secret, but to use the same one as last year???? Oh well. I took at off my website to try and respect everyone's wishes, not that it does any good.

The BMORG obviously does not try very hard to keep it a secret. Other than the statement that it should not be made public they really don't do anything - other than make it available to the masses... sheesh.

Given the level of stress that placement seems to cause you'd think they would either be more transparent or more secretive. The middle ground that they inhabit seems destined to create stress.

Why? If camp locations are kept confidential what is the purpose of the WWW guide if you have no idea where a camp is located?
