Cushy accomodations
Cushy accomodations
I am a first time burner and heard there are first class "cushy" accommodations available? Is this true and if so how do I find them?

And I so appreciate the effort. But hey, this one? I'm undecided and tired, so I'm craving a touch of snark myself.Badger wrote:Sometimes you want - you pray that they're a sock.
You really want to believe that there just can't be so many....oh, never mind.
I'm on day 2 of Try to Be Nice Week and it just isn't fucking working out that well.

IF you're for real...
I don't know where you got that idea, it goes against everything playa living is about. The whole point is that NOTHING is provided, you take care of your own needs.
I live very "cushy" on the playa, I keep the A/C in my camper on at all times, I cruise in a mutant vehicle, I take a nice hot shower at least once a day, etc. because I like it that way and I bring all my own shit to make it happen.
You can do that for yourself too if you want it like that. Expecting anyone else to provide it doesn't fly, it's so un-burner that so far no one even believes you're for real.

No, there are no cushy camps you can simply buy into. If there are I don't know of them. But the Captain is right, that's so un-burnerish you do appear to be someone who is simply yanking our collective chains. Even your response makes me a bit queasy, I mean, we've been deluged with people asking why there aren't shuttles, who can deliver water to their camp so they don't have to haul it, and on and on. And now someone asking if we can search the theme camps for them. Radical self-reliance includes the ability to google and email polite requests to join camps. By this time of year, most of the really good ones are full.
I'm thinking you have a week in the desert confused with a day spa.
Do keep talking to us, I have the urge to know how you came by your perceptions of the event.
Hey, Malibumom maybe we could work something out.
Would you consider sharing a popup with a single male...early 50's a memorable experience?
We could pick you up at the airport.
You could feel the power of the thunderous 300 cubic inch 6 cylinder powering up the road...sitting in that big captains chair.

Cushy in the third world refugee camp sense or ??malibumom wrote:I am a first time burner and heard there are first class "cushy" accommodations available? Is this true and if so how do I find them?
There are varying ranges of stuff at each camp and varying amounts of participation as part of it.
Bring in a shower truck and the cost goes way up.
Or build it yourself.
There are indeed for profit camps that provide everything.
But most that want that have their pa bring the bus out already set up.
I have offered to concierge (at no charge) a setup for a couple of people that would have to fly in, and that I thought would get involved.
I know how hard it is to fly in and get everything together.
But they have to get involved when they get here.
Re: Cushy accomodations
I too would be very willing to help get a fly boy or girl to BM...a person in Reno off a flight who needs a spot in my van and enough room to accept everything from his or her or their WalMart (hiss) spree...
Now that, I will do.

Two words come to mind.I really want to this to be a memorable first burning man experience and i heard that there are camps that provide all for you..Sorry
'Entitlement' and 'spectator.'
The perception that there are cushy camps available to those who seek them suggests (to me) a transitioning from the idiom of self-sufficiency to pampered, consumerist spectator. I think this is the slippery slope so many have alluded to over the past few years.
When people are invested more in seeing the spectacle than being the spectacle is when some people start jumping the shark. Annectodotally this is what I'm starting to see. That may not translate into numbers just yet but my gut tells me that overwhelmingly those who elect not to return do so because of the frustration and mild contempt they hold towards people holding such perceptions. There's just not much to be gained from being partially surrounded by folks who expect to have their asses washed just because they can afford it.

Badger, I have to agree with you that the idea of being pampered to ease your way into Burning Man the first time goes against everything I hold dear about the event. It reeks of radical self-entitlement and spectatorism. I have no problem with folks spectating on the playa. I personally love to go out and see what everyone else is doing, but the whole thing I find so appealing about BRC is creating something to give back to the city. It is the element of roughing it and doing it yourself that gives the whole thing its edge. If we did it in some fairgrounds in the midwest surrounded by hotels it would not have the same energy, even if the entire installation was in place. Just sayin...
A plan is what you vary from.
Destiny Lounge 3D will be at Bradbury and 3:15 this year as a part of the 404: Village Not Found group of camps! Come see us!

A lot to think about there, Badger.
One question that springs to mind is who will create the spectacle? At some point the people who do it for the love of doing it will jump that ship. Then we get paid entertainers? Or pay the people who are doing it now?
Sounds dreadful.

Well kiddo, the spectacle is already happening at some of the more obscure regionals around the country. I'm not advertising here but they're there if you know how to seek them out and do so with a sincere intention of contributing to the collective. One question that springs to mind is who will create the spectacle?
And we're not talking hippie BS either.

I'm sure that that's true, and it warms me to think that the upwelling of creativity continues, even if I'm never hip enough to find it. (And I must admit that I've been lucky to see what I have seen.)
But the question I was asking was what's the incentive for "burners" to provide the entertainment for those who are using money to purchase places in "cushy camps." Once there is a certain amount of honest-to-goodness spectators, the "cultural creatives" won't want to go through the expence in time and cash to provide something for those spectators to watch. At which point, the cushy camps pay for creative acts?
