Alcohol questions

Post by aerodrown » Mon May 03, 2004 8:14 pm

okay, most places, noone gives a shit what your age is, just dont be a dumbass about how you drink. my question is whats the age situation with the alcohol on the playa? Don't give me that PR "we obey all laws" shit, either. I wanna know the probability of me getting slammed at the absinthe bar is. Or any bar for that matter. LOL. Also, can i get booze if i dont bring it? i mean, i do stoopid stuff, but driving from VA to NV with beer, being underage and all, would be a stupid-ass thing to do, now wouldnt it? okay, im cold and sleepy and i hav to pee. im leaving, later.

Also- i came out of walmart today and on my way to the car i was singing jesus loves me. my mom was like "you should sing that at BM and see how many people you can get to sing it"
i was like, "yeah, 50000 people in the desert singing jesus loves me, haha"
she said we could do that hands over the world thing and make this huge circle. it'd be funnier if the whole fucking group was on acid, but thats just me. My mom has probs. lol who am i to talk.

My friend, if I were you I would count on not drinking. We already love you so much Aerodrown, we would hate to lose you. It's ok not to drink or do drugs at burningman. It is such a dangerous place and with so much going on you will want to experience every moment and save them each as lifelong memories. It is not cool to drink, do not believe you do not have to live you're life in a drunk stumbling stupor. Drinking is really about socializing and hanging with others and enjoying a scene, you obviously can do this quite well without drinking to ease you're demons and phobias. It is so dangerous to be drunk in the desert you can not imagine, and to be drunk at burningman is evenmoreso. There are so many dangerous things going on everywhere you turn at the burn it's usually better to keep you're wits about you and just enjoy the moments.

I love the caring way in which you address his post. I hope one day I may be wise enough to communicate in that way.

So anyhow, what age are we talking about, Aerodrown? and perhaps more important, why do you want to attend BM? I ask because it is different things to different people and want to put your post in perspective.

the reason i want to go is burning man. i really want to be a part of it. it looks like something that would change my life. the reason im really concerned about the alcohol is b/c even though im only 17, i've wanted to try absinthe for about three years (even though i'd never tried anything until a year ago). the way i originally posted seems to make people think im a jackass, but that was just excitement and lack of sleep. iv never been drunk before, but im very interested in the human/psychoactive relationship. Besides, i figure its a time to try new things.

btw, im a girl. :-)

It's legal in London, you could probably go there and try it. Would probably be less $$ too.

My opinion (not reflecting that of the ePlaya Admins, the LLC, or Larry Harvey himself), worth what you paid for it:

There are a lot of things that could go wrong here. You could have a bad trip. Someone else having a bad trip could come crashing through your camp and drag you down the rabbit hole with her. The Burn could be the wrong venue for you (it does happen), and what might otherwise have been a great experience for you could go sour because the setting is putting you off, and you're unwilling or unable to let your guard down.

BurningMan is a psychoactive substance all on its own. That goes double for a virgin, and TRIPLE for a virgin who's never been drunk before. I spent the week clean and effectively sober last year (I drank one night, and was still upright and coherent when we got back to camp), and still had my mind blown by everything I saw and did. Conversely, the first time I ever smoked pot, I was already drunk; afterward I realized it was an absolutely useless experience when it came to determining whether or not I actually LIKED pot. :?

So try BMan straight the first time; come back to the Default Whirled, find someone you trust to watch over you, and try absinthe in a place where you have greater control over your surroundings. Then, once you've determined if they're things you enjoy individually, make arrangements to try combining the two.

It's kind of like "The first rule of fight club is..."

You know, Aerodrown, If you go up to a bar at Burning Man and say "I'm underaged will you give me a drink?" You'll probably be laughed down the street and into the next block. Unless whoever is serving is a moron or doesn't believe in the police.

Just like that, coming here, asking such a question is not really adviseable. All moral opinions on drinking aside [because I definetly was not 21 last year at Burning Man] the LAW says blah blah blah, blah blah blah blah and therefore you should go with the concept of either 1.) not drinking or 2.) not telling anyone you plan on drinking with your age.

Nobody is required to card you down there. In most cases, they won't. But you have to realize if you are drinking and you get caught by the po-po, and yes there is a po-po down there, whoever gave you that booze will also be in a world of hurting. Heaven forbid you are caught doing anything more serious.

I'm all for having fun but just remember to:

1.) Keep the facts hidden under an adequate layer of playa-dust
2.) Be responsible, especially since you are female PLEASE be responsible
3.) ALWAYS bring a friend [goes with the female thing]

Now Aerodrown,
you seem fairly smart and though young, everyone is entitled to make a mistake every now and then. However, seems to me you've been given some great advise here. I hope the advise is adhering to your young mind and taken to heart.
Last thing in the world none of us wants is anything bad happening to you.

( I myself would get pretty pissed off if anything bad happened to you around me.)

like other things BM, you'd better drop your expectations about absinthe. Don't believe the hype. The shit's pretty tame. It sure as hell is not worth the travel and financial sacrifice you are making.

The playa dust has magic pixie crystals (not to be confused with pixie stix) that make you have the most lovely time. A hangover out on the playa is not a fun thing. I kept getting dust in my bloody marys.
I am a bit tied up at the moment...but if you leave your name and number.....

i think all the caring is gonna make me cry. okay, to clear a few things:

1) im sure as hell not coming for booze. i just thought itd be a nice side item, like a salad with steak.

2) there was a comment about me having a friend and being xtra careful bn im a gurl. but im *SO* not the type. I'm not attractive (usually). I'm not frigging HUGE but i am chunky. I keep my hair short for easier care and i wear like chains and baggy clothes and tshirts, so most people think im a guy (i do have a very gender-neutral face, and b/c of the baggy clothes its hard to see my boobs, despite being c's). I mean, i'm sute, but not the "take advantage" cute. no guy would think it to be worth it.

http://profiles.yahoo.com/aerodrown there's a pic of me, click it for bigger.

3) i know its a high in itself. i was just wondering. :-P i love you all and thanks for caring so much. if i could go back so that my op wasn't so bad and didnt bug you guys, i would. but yuove read it now so it doesnt matter. Please dont think any lower of me. im a great person. really. scuze me while i go search for my prozac......... lol i dont take prozac, silly! im on paxil. and depakote. and concerta. *twitches*[/url]

I'm gonna second Stuart's opinion on absinthe. Wanna know what it tastes like? Take a licorice tonic. A strong one. Now let it sit in the sun until rancid. Drink it. That approximates the flavor. As for the effects, it gets you an ever so slightly different kind of drunk, but you're still drunk, not high. Unless it falls into your lap, don't bother.
That aside, I know plenty of people who've gotten drunk on the playa and sworn never to do so again. Dehydration in the desert is vicious and you can lose entire days if you're not careful. Regardless of legalities, you're not sufficiently experienced to know how much is too much in a foreign climate and none of us want to see you wind up in the medical tent.
Besides, you coming here and asking how to get alcohol is reminiscent of a six year old asking her parents if she can steal from the cookie jar. You should know what the answer's gonna be by now.

Oh, honey.... *laughs* You'll be somebody's type, I assure you. I'm 5'6", 360 - and one of the only two nights my boyfriend wasn't in camp with me, the guy across the street tried to get me to sleep with him.

I have not yet been to burning man as many of you know already, But I have had my share of confrontations with drunken, high, or just mentally unstable people. I know some of you are trying to let aerodrown come to this conclusion on her own, but I am not one of the subtle types so I thought I would just spell it out.
When someone is not in their right mind, from some intoxican or some kind of mental, aggression, impulse control problem; it doesn't matter what you look like or if you resemble a man or woman. If someone wants to take advantage of you whether it be sexual, or beating the crap out of you or stealing your shit right off of your back; there going to do it. A man is more likely able to fend off preditors either by intimitation or an actual physical altercation. I tend not to admit this, but men have an advantage when it comes to upper body strength. So if any kind of altercation were to go down you (whether they know your gender or not) would be at a disadvantage. I think that in general it is best to have someone with you no matter your gender, but some yahoo is less likely to fuck with a man than a woman. I would also like to say that you do look young, and people are going to realize that it will be easier to fuck with a young adult, than a person in their thirties. And if you were intoxicated at the time you'll be an easy target with no one there to check your judgement.
I believe that burning man is a wonderful and friendly community. But as with every community, there are always going to be yahoos and not so nice folks. Add into the equation that there seems to be more experimentaion with mind altering substances and partying in a smaller area than a normal communtiy, you really cannot predict what people are going to do.

Is it just me or does it seem that I am getting a bit long winded the longer I post on this board.

pc...

alcohol is a naturally occuring element on the playa. you meet someone, you chat it up, then before you know it, they invite you for a cold magarita. big fucking deal.
but, if this is such a big deal, then that raises eyebrows. at 17 you should have been down the road a few times as it is living in ameri*k*a.
you'll be fine.

well AD, if you make it to the playa and really have your heart set on the mega licorice-ness that is absinthe, come find me and I can hook you up. A certain relative of mine brings jugs and jugs of the stuff and gets a big kick out of being an absinthe guide. He knows the proper method for getting the most mileage out of it.
