Planet X

Post by wedeliver » Thu Aug 13, 2009 5:46 am

I called Planet X to see if they were going to be open on the Sunday before opening day and he said, "if any burning man people come in here I will get my shotgun and shoot them"

He also said something about how as individuals we are ok, but as a group he hates us. He stated that already he was experiencing some kind of bad things from burning man people.

I was surprised at this reaction and I really wonder how justified it is. Last year a few people left here on friday and saturday and maybe sunday to stop there on the way to black rock city. I wonder if they were a problem or something.

I am thinking of calling back to get clarification on his policy towards people who are going to and coming from Burning Man.

It`s only a relentless pack of parched, wild eyed, dirty, needy, demanding, spoiled city dwelling hippies for the week and holiday weekend.
How dare he make such a statement.

Here is info on Planet X

http://planetxpottery.com/

I thought people would stop there and make purchases. you know buy stuff from a business. Maybe on the way home some are dirty. I think we know there will be a lot of people staging their arrival for early monday morning and I was trying to help with that effort.

I just wonder if as a community we are perceived to be assholes, other then the Empire Store and Gas Station, I don't see anyone else who really wants burners to stop there.

(oh, and of course us here, we welcome burners)

for those coming from the Pacific Northwest

Four courners market in Alturas will be staying open all night Sunday 8-30-09. Fuel will be available in Alturas all night also.

From a purely business aspect, it is a tremendous boon to shop owners for a week or so...But, to an art dealer? My guess is most burners don`t have much disposable cash left for art purchases because of the costs incurred for the trip & event. Some are well healed but not most.
I think there is also a "desperate" vibe that goes along with many travelers to BM. Not all, but lots of participants are far from home. They are not used to the desert. It`s hot, dusty. They still need water, or have forgotten some critical item for their vacation. Many are trying to get to the event in time or trying to connect or meet with fellow burners who have been separated during the long trip. Some have mechanical problems, or just need to park someplace for a while for whatever reasons. Some are having emotional meltdowns.
These type of things, individually by themselves, are usually not too troublesome to a local population. But, multiply these kinds of interactions by the tens or hundreds and I could see where it might wear thin with someone who is used to being in control of their own mellow vibed environment and have shunned the crowds.
And besides nothing is more irritating than a horde of cash strapped strangers coming onto your property and being all radically self reliant, inclusive, and participatory. It would be infuriating after a while.

The Planet X guy has hated the event for years--for longer than I've been a member of this board.
If there's any serious history, I don't know what it is.

I do know that he's a transplant himself, some hippie or the like who went off into the desert to be alone and make pottery and has no tolerance for people who've been there less time than he is.

With making a statement with getting a gun and shot people from BM is message enough to leave him alone. I noticed that he mentions "Nevadans" on his website as though he wants his biz only from an exclusive clientele and anyone else can shop somewhere else.

Don't mind if I do

I faintly remember that he and a group tried to stop Burning Man through the environmental impact statement back around 2000.

Badger has better knowledge of the man and what ever incident may have incured.

Maybe he hates BM because he had hoped to run away from all the crazies of SF and they came to invade his desert.

If he doesn't want our business, he should take his sign down for a couple of weeks.

The locals warned me that the dude is an asshole when I asked about it a decade or so ago.

It should be obvious with a name like "Planet X" he expects only the finest, most well-heeled and classy clientele.

I've gone up there in a DPW teeshirt and bought a few plates. No big deal. Nice place, for the fucking desert.

As for objecting to the event on environmental grounds, I don't think either side has sufficient data.

Although I have passed by Planet X a hundred times or more I have never stopped there. I understand he does nice work but does not care much for big crowds of people. In the remote areas of the West there are many people who are there so they will not have to be around big groups of people. He is out there because he wants the quiet and the solitude, if he wanted to live in a city of 50,000 he would move.
As to the opinion the members of the communities of Empire and Gerlach have toward Burning Man we are liked by most. I go to Gerlach several times a year and talk to the locals and listen to conversations. Those in business make money from us and many of those who live there enjoy the parade as the burners come and go. The installation of solar panels for the Gerlach School was a wonderful and is very popular in the area. We will continue t be accepted and welcomed by the communities as long as we treat them decently, respectfully and don't act like a bunch of dirty stupid hippies.

we went to planet x in 1996....

it was quite the oasis...we had some lunch, bought some plates, and almost ended up staying there when the drugs started to wear off and we realized that defaultia would have our heads if we didn't return and submit.

it's one of those decisions i kinda regret.

returning to defaultia, not the visit to planet x.

he seemed like a nice guy, maybe i'm wrong, maybe i'm not.

My first time there was in the late '90s and I have been back 3 or 4 times since then. Always bought some of their fine pottery. I thought the people that I met there were very nice.

Thats why I was so surprised when I called. He was pissed and said something about how burning man people are allready doing something that he don't like.
