weather at night

Post by BMnoob » Fri Aug 14, 2009 10:50 am

I've been told that it gets cold at night. Will it get cold enough to warrant more than one layer of clothing?

It's the high desert, so it cools off rapidly once the sun goes down. The wind can be pretty strong, so wind chill is an issue.

It's been known to get down below 40 F, but that's unusual. Below 50 F is pretty common, at least for some of the nights.

It can also stay over 60 F at night for quite a while, so it's good to be flexible.

I've been warm enough some nights to need nothing more than a single layer, and then there have been times, like temple burn last year, where multiple layers and blankets and nearby warm bodies were barely enough to keep me warm.
It's going to be alright.

The cold can come on pretty suddenly, too. There's been some nights where it stays fairly balmy for a few hours, then a gust of wind comes in and you can feel the temperature make a big drop.

It's been cool here in Reno, for this early in August. So I would be surprised to see some cool temps out there this year........

I like the way he calls 90 degrees "cool".

When I'm driving to work at 8 a.m. and it's already 85 and climbing...90 is cool.

I knew I'd acclimated to living in the South when, a few weeks ago, the weather called for 90 and I thought, "That sounds good!"

The desert is going to be a welcome break from 100+ degrees/100% humidity...anyways.

Layers are my trick for warmth - esp. using something you can sleep in as the bottom one, so when you're ready to crawl into bed you don't have to get nekkid in the cold, and rewarm.

Last Weds (I think it was) It was 57 degrees when I got home from work at 5pm! (Silly me wore shorts to work and about froze my ninny's walking back to my car) and it was windy! Granted it was back in the 80's the very next day, that's just how we roll around here!
Bottom line, bring clothes for all kinds of weather.

Some years I have gone from fire to fire just to keep warm around 4am. The coldest time is dawn tho. Brrrrr. 3 or 4 layers and still cold.

Other years, especially the past few, I seem to remember 65-70 all night long.

The sun drops behind the mountains to the west about 7:00pm and the temperature begins to go down also. As it get later the temp can drop 10 or 15 degrees per hour. going from 100degrees to 50degrees in just a few hours can be hard for the body to manage.

I like to find pockets of warm air and follow 'em around.

I don't recall the year for sure (I want to say 2005, but don't quote me on that) and we hit record lows in BRC. It went from 28 degrees to 105 in 36 hours. People are prepared for it to drop into the 40s. Hell, we can double up and face down tempertures in the 30s. But when it goes below freezing (I think this included the wind chill factor), then you thank doG that you have an RV. But in 2003 almost every night up until and beyond midnight it was shorts and wife beaters. So as the Boy Scouts would say, Be Prepared.

Be prepared, like the scouts say.

I bring a down filled, extreme cold, army surplus, mummy bag ( just in case ). Extra blankets, 2 duvets, extra pillows, extra large towels. My 4 inch foam mattress keeps me off the cold ground, a plastic tarp under the tent floor. I usually sleep under a sheet and a light blanket.

Lame pickup line series:
(1)Want to stay warm tonight ? if yes, go to (3). if no , go to (2)

(2)What? You aren't hot are you? if yes,go to (4). if no, go to (3)

(3)Would you like me to warm you up? if yes, go to your tent. if no , go to (4)

(4)Prove it. If she wants to prove it, go to your tent. If no, say Hi to next girl.

(5) start series from (1).

A few swigs of good whiskey at the Gigsville carbaque will chase the chills away every time.

There is a good reason they bring a full 18 wheeler full of firewood each year.

There isn't any air at night, so if you are outside of your pressurized capsule, you will die. The good news is that the blinkie lights work in a vacuum, so it is unlikely you will be run over by someone on a bicycle (pressurized) or MV (unpressurized...art(!)) as you lie there erupting like a coelacanth on a Thai fishing boat deck.

Medical treats more people for hypothermia than for hyperthermia. The forcast for next week is that the lows in Gerlach will range from the low 50;s to the middle 50's.
To answer the original question, will one layer of clothing be sufficient? Yes, if it is filled with down.

This morning it is 55 degrees and raining in Utah. We share weather patterns with the playa sometimes. We're packing for cold at night.

That's great burningman weather. Weather reports are guessing that it may stay that cool during the day and warm up a bit a night. I just hope the dust is a little calmer than last year. I enjoy a big dust storm or two but with my daughter so many got ridiculous at points last year. This next year was better. ;)

A coworker of Mr.Lost was out there last week setting up the tanks, said the wind was whipping pretty good (he guestimated 30+mph) and no inkling of a sand storm. Huzzah! :D
On that note we, overall, have had a cooler, wetter than normal summer.

The sand storm is when wind picks up loose dirt. If the playa has not been driven on then it has a crusty surface that is not loose dirt, after a few vehicles travel over the playa surface it becomes loose dirt and can then be airborn during a wind storm.

Fluff & crust.. just like every year.
Weather.. I'm ALWAYS cold out there at night.. I think because it's so hot during the day. Layers are the way to go. Stick a sweatshirt in your backpack just in case.

Okay everyone, stop teasing the noob. Everyone knows that Bruno turns off the weather when he closes the restaurant. Gerlach's too small a town to have weather 24/7.

weather, we want weather, we will weather weather, wherever we want, writhing without will, with wretched writings woefully written within walls where we withhold white worms with wrinkled wrists, withering, wracked with whimsical, writhing women, wanting what we won't withhold when we work with wanton wherewithal while wrens write wholesome woeful witticisms without wanting welcomes with whistles
