Where to play Topstone?

Post by Olle » Mon Aug 17, 2009 1:10 pm

Hi!

I'm travelling from Sweden to participate in Burning Man with a project/event called Topstone.
Topstone is a board game played by 4 to 8 players to develop radical ideas into workable solutions. It starts with a concrete challenge/issue and more or less wild ideas from the players. You win if you are the best to build on other players ideas in a way they understand and appreciate.
The game has a voting system in which it is not always best to get many "yes" votes. This gives more original and creative ideas a chance to grow and show their value before they have to compete with more traditional ideas.

Topstone has the look and feel of a classical board game. It's pyramid-shaped board is made out of wood and ideas are written on flat white stones that are then used as pieces in the game.

I will look for groups of people working together creating something and in need of developing ideas among each other.
When i played on the beach at the Secret Island Nation festival in Sweden a couple of weeks ago, i started a game with 4 players, but soon there was a group of 15 players, since people passing by got interested and joined the session. So i look for a open place without a lot of noise where groups of up to 15 persons can spend up to 4 hours around the game. Sitting on the ground is totally ok. Can you recommend a place to host game sessions?

I am developing the game for situations like Burning Man and similar creative events. It would be very helpful if i, with the permission from participants, can use pictures from sessions on my website. So i also want to apply for a commercial use tag on my camera. How do i do that?

See you in the desert!

I'm not aware of a commercial use tag. See this section:
http://www.burningman.com/press/
and email the press address for information on permitted uses.

From the:
"Video/DV/Film/Digital Camera Personal Use Agreement
Burning Man 2009"

"What if I’m making a commercial video, or I change my mind and want to sell my footage?
Commerce isn’t evil; artists have a right to sell their work – but we oppose turning Burning Man into a commodity. If you desire to film for a commercial purpose, you can
do so only if you receive a written approval from Burning Man for your proposed project.
You must check in with our friendly Media Ho’s at Media Mecca in Center Camp if you
are certain you will use footage for any public purpose beyond this agreement. Please
note that receiving a tag for your camera, whether a personal use tag or a commercial
use tag, does not mean that Burning Man has granted you any rights to use the footage
you obtain except for personal use. You can obtain the right to use footage for other than
personal use only if you receive written permission from Burning Man."

Yeah, send them an e-mail, but understand that things are really heating up for the workers at this time. You can do it on-playa, at Media Mecca (in Center Camp, the circle that starts at 6 0;clock street and Esplanade (the innermost road.) It may be that if you're intending to use this only on your website, and if you don't give "Burningman" title space that they will be okay with it anyway. But a few minutes conversation wouldn't be a burden on you, I'm sure.

You might want to discuss the use of the pictures with the people you photograph, perhaps get a model release.
