Well, this is understandable if they are a 'private' camp and are not advertising as offering food to the general playa, no?

wow, that really stink to high heaven.

I can't believe that thier original price was $1500, and $1000 is the current sale price.

It does come with a bed, showers, shade and a private JOTS.

not really a bad deal for those that are flying in from another country, regardless of the commerce and profit they make off of whoever they get thier hooks into.

BM Kitchen Info

The 24 Hour Kitchen is a blend of vegan and raw food chefs that have a passion for cooking on the playa. We hope to one day reach the goal of feeding every playa citizen a warm hearty meal. Last year we participated in the Entheon Village kitchen and prepared over 600 meals a day. This year we are well prepared to cook for up to 1000 a day since we have invested in some better kitchen gear. We will be on the playa early again this year for the Feed the Artists program so stop on by and eat well while building in the dust.....

(oh and pay them $221 for the food please)....[/quote]

Why does this seem to bother people so much? Lots and lots of theme camps charge nearly this much for shared infrastructure that doesn't include such carefully prepared meals,e tc.

Showers, food, chill spaces..

This camp isn't my sort of scene...but I just don't get how it's so much different than the other large theme camps that have dues if you want to be with them.

For me, it is that they are feeding non-camp mates. While this is apparently okay, it is not a choice i would make.

That said, we used to have vegan pancake breakfasts in Hushville, which would turn into elaborate "stone soup" brunches. No money, big meals, folks pitchng in, and were there non-Hushers there? Probably. Was it great? yes. Have we duplicated it without the powerhouses who were behind it before? Sadly, no.

It bothers me because the price is too high. That means that they are making money on the deal. Now maybe they use that money for some krisha charity or what ever. But at the point where they exceed the cost of feeding me they need to explain exactly what happens to the excess money. Simply claiming holier-than-thou status and non-profit status is not sufficient.

Anyone that falls for 'just give me your money and trust me' gets what they deserve. Maybe the excess sends their executives to a non-profit conference in CanCun. Who knows?

The theme camp I am associated with charges a lot less for a lot more.

Something does not smell right over in krishna land.

Maybe they simply need to explain better. Maybe they don't want too explain...

I can only imagine the sh*t storm if a christian theme camp tried to do exactly the same thing. Feed you chistian food and surround you with christian love and music. Give you some christian literature. Maybe a pencil that says jesus died for you on the side...

Not trying to ruffle feathers, but I got a free hot meal (and some preaching, hehe) at Krishna Kamp my first year at burning man (although it may be a different camp - it seemed very small and only had three or four people hanging out - including an elderly scottish krishna) and that experience was the main reason I decided to offer free food at our camp. This is going to be our first year as an official theme camp and we're giving away food for 50 on Tues/Wed/Thur/Fri at 9pm (we're at 6 & DNA and you're welcome to come!)

Personally I think that's the idea they should have been going for though... if they really want to feed 1000 people per day and really love doing it then fine - go ahead and do it. For free. That's part of the point of burning man. You aren't supposed to be coming up with great goals and ideas that only work if you charge your participants... that's a bit too much like the world that surrounds us the other 355 days of the year. For me, feeding 200 people over the course of the week was a big expense, but it was one I was willing to pay because of my hope that free hot food would help impart some joy on my fellow burners.

My point is this - if they wanted to give it away - awesome. If they have to charge then they need to come up with another idea for how they can contribute or just drop it entirely. As they've said in this post they're committed to bringing art and entertainment to the playa so I'm not trying to say they owe burners any more than they already provide. I'm just saying that if they feel like they have extra time on their hands to come up with other offerings that those other offerings should be 100% free and open to all - not only those people that pay them in advance.

If they are charging camp mates dues for food, infrastructure, etc. That's totally fine.

However if they are creating a service, where you can pre-pay for meals on the playa, whether you're part of the camp or not, how is that not commerce at Burning Man?

The last few years some of the best meals I had on the playa we're from "restaurant" camps that didn't charge a penny. If anyone went to Clusterfork in 2007, you probably had one of the best steak dinners of your life there.

Imagine if the Lamplighters charged everyone a $10 fee in the months before burning man to get a ticket to attend their Sangria and Quesadia party on Monday night, how would that be any different than what these asshats are doing?

It's commercialism on the playa, regardless of all the hippy dippy vegan Krishna crap, it's still a commercial endeavor, and if they are doing it this year I hope the powers that be boot their asses out of the city.
