another shade question

Post by love123 » Tue Aug 18, 2009 9:36 pm

As for a shade structure for my little pop up tent, I have the REI Alcove with Wind Walls. I figured that I'd have to buy something sturdier for BM. However, I have read other posts that suggest that if I stake it securely, it might be OK. Any tips or suggestions to a first timer? Thanks (:

rebar & rope (be sure to get caps for the rebar so you don't impale drunk people)

Military surplus tent stakes & parachute cord.

Drive stakes flush so you don't have to cap them.

Thanks for taking the time reply. So, it sounds like if I'm just really on top of it with the stakes and cords, I can get away with my REI gear. You gave me the answer I was hoping to hear. Though, just to be thorough, if anyone else wants to put in their 2 cents, I welcome all other opinions re: whether or not an REI Alcove with Windows (if properly staked and tied) should be able to handle playa conditions. Thank you(:

We have an REI we have used for years under a carport, and it has been just fine. It also holds up at our regional, and we have winds there which took out our Coleman four-man. (I think it is 15 years old, backpacker tent) Your REI should be okay.

We have used our REI Alcove the past two years (big wind years) and it has done great. Use 15 inch rebar stakes and orient the short ends toward the wind. 2009 will be first year we are using the wind walls, these will be mostly for shade, so I will orient it the same way.
