Making Yoghurt on the Playa?

Post by nzpunter » Thu Aug 20, 2009 1:28 pm

Hello.

Has anyone made yoghurt on the playa?

Im thinking of:
Water + Milk powder + culture.
ala: http://www.ehow.com/how_2112247_yogurt- ... -milk.html

Im thinking of using solar to heat the water in the morning.. to get it up to temp

then insulating it for the rest of the day to allow it to set..
To be consumed that night.

Is this  crazy ?

Cheers
Craig

I'll write an expiry date on the container of course...

If the plastic is bulging/creaking its time to find some cover...

When my package is bulging, then it's hard not to "make yoghurt."

The trick would be to keep it at a constant temperature and not over-heat it and kill the cultures. Also, it gets pretty cold at night. Worst case is you end up with something like buttermilk and use it to make pancakes. Try it and let us know!

It is not crazy.

A couple years back I brought a pint of sourdough culture and a bag of flour and made a loaf of sourdough bread on the playa using a solar oven. The bread rose nicely and it tasted great. The only puzzling part was that the bread crust never browned.

I have not made yoghurt on the playa, but I think the issues are similar. Go for it.
