Adopt me please! or Give me a ride.

Post by optimusprime » Wed Aug 19, 2009 2:29 am

I am new at this, but i think you'll like me.

i can dance, build, paint, write poetry, make theatre, listen, teach, massage, heal, and put a smile on your face.

I'm English, living in San Fran, first time Burner, looking for some cool people to camp with. I have a few friends going but no-one i can camp with.

I can't depart before Satyrday, and i must be back by Moonday afternoon.

if you can help me, please get in contact. I can come meet you if you want to interview me for your camp/ride first.

Cheers.
What would Optimus Prime do?

hey just a note here from some one who has taken folks out to BM before that I didn't really know (insert horror story here...) I can say just from my experience that there are a few things some one would want to know (and thus you really should post here) before they would even think about doing it.

* How much are you willing to kick in for petrol
* How much space will your stuff take up
* Do you have a place you are intending to camp and do you need to be dropped off there
* Do you have everything you will need to survive in the playa, and have read the survival guide at least 12 times.
* Tell me exactly what you intend to bring so I'll know if you REALLY did read the survival guide.

I'm not sure if people realise exactly how much of an undertaking it is to take some one out to the burn. Our group is only putting 2 people in each vehicle, all of which are minivan sized, in order to have room for all the stuff they would need. When you put together tent, 10-30 gallons of water, a bike, clothes, food, you've easily taken up a back seat.

Other people may have different feelings about this, but I do end up feeling a bit responsible for a person's well being if I've dragged them off to the desert, especially a virgin. I had one rider, who claimed to have been before so should have known better, get so excited when she saw burners at Gerlach that she wanted me to let her out and she'd "get a ride from some one and find you later to get my stuff". There was simply no way I was gonna let some one get separated from all the stuff they needed to survive so I didn't even stop. Another time I brought some one up who was supposed to meet up with a friend who had one of those huge luxury 45' RVs who had enough food, water, etc for him presumably ... problem is that we couldn't find him, for days. Turns out they hadn't even left till Thursday so our small group of 4 got an extra person from Monday - Thursday, which put a serious strain on our water and food resources. What was I gonna do, say "sorry man, go sleep on the dirt and find your own water".

I say this not to be a dick, but to make sure you've really thought this all out and are prepared enough to go and not become a huge hassle for whoever brings you. No offense, but unless it is some one with desert camping experience almost any first timer will end up needing a bit of hand holding and the person that drives you out there often gets forced into that role.

First off what type of "friends" do you have who won't let you camp with you for 1 dayf?
Second, why bother going for just that short a time?
To me BM is much more that watching the man burn....but maybe I'm wrong.....
