New camp, looking for some help.

Post by stressknot » Thu Aug 13, 2009 10:21 am

Heyooo yo.
We are a new camp, still dealing with identity issues. As in, we haven't fully decided on a name ;)
However, things have been coming together faster than we expected.

Just this month we went from a just a group of hooligans to acquiring two domes, one 30" and one 40", and still being hooligans.
We will be using the 40" for our parlay area and are looking for some extra hands, equipment, or ideas for getting things popping.

What we need:
LIGHTING!! Big time. We have zero at this point. Ideally we are looking for a lighting set up that can change colors, and light the entire dome.
Anything will help. If anyone has any extra lighting, we would love to use, borrow, or purchase it.

POWER! We currently have one generator that is a standard Honda being used for work purposes (welding, etc). Im not sure this will cover everything. Again, we are looking to use, borrow, or purchase.

MUSIC/DJ! Although we are all music heads and will be bringing out ipods, etc.. we do not have anyone with equipment to spin or even entertain. We are all interested in the bass heavy, grimey dubstep as well as hiphop and all else.
Our sound set up is nothing amazing but we do have a pretty loud system that we have pieced together, and just added a 9 speaker BOSE setup that may or may not work together with what we have. Anyone technical in this area would be great.

ART/DECORATION. Any helping hand in this area is always appreciated.

Please reply or hit me back on email with any ideas. We are looking to camp around 5:45 & F as we usually do, but we will see how that goes. We are a bay area camp centralized in Sonoma County, CA.

Thanks.
Gravy.

Organizing a camp 2 weeks before the event.

Why so early?

Good luck with that.

2 flashlights will light a 40" and a 30" dome. Zorro opened the door! Im sure you have looked at craigslist , E-bay ect, but also look at business for sale sections they might want to off what you are looking for, Also I would recomend renting a deisel gennie , quiet and can handle a lot of differnt power points if a grid is put into place

um, well I don't know what to say... something besides some ipods and two domes is gonna be needed. If you have a generator, outdoor floodlights of different colors aren't too expensive. Check out biglots or something like and you can probably find old christmas lights. Also this is a good time of year to pick up on clearance patio lighting, the silly light strings with flip flops and tiki masks suchlike, and spring summer garden decorations... Retail is getting ready for fall and winter so all the spring summer stuff is getting discounted.

Wha?!?

Ok, I just checked twice and yeah, I really am viewing the Theme Camp section.

a) You are not a theme camp. I know this because you have stated no theme. You are some people camping together.
b) You are asking for help in the theme camp section. I do not know about the rest of the folks on here, but our camp is pretty damn busy buying, scavenging, building, and otherwise prepping for our own camp. I would assume the same for most other placed camps, although some have been around longer and probably have less to do than we do. But still.
c) You've got about 2 weeks to go til the gates open.

Next year seems like a good time to think about these things. Maybe in the dead of winter, so you have enough time to properly plan for your burn in 2010. This year just come and enjoy as you always do.

Not all theme camps are "registered" theme camps. There is no reason they can't be an unregistered theme camp. Well, except they only have two weeks, a 30 inch dome and a 40 inch dome and a couple of Ipods.....

And also no theme, or anything to help guide them as they try to form something from nothing.

The 40" dome sounds pretty cool, though. I think they're onto something. We could've saved loads of time and money if we'd just made a theme camp for pixies.

Put the 30 inch dome inside the 40 inch dome and use a keychain LED light.

If you put the doors to the dome on oposite sides ...

Don't forget the orange cones.

By the way, I approve of your last-minute, to hell with the planning approach. I'm way too AR for that, but I'm confident that you're going to have a good time, especially now that you've been officially approved by someone is very unofficial.

Keep on truckin'. You've got this week and next to crunch. Bring your shit out, set it up. Include your neighbors in the chill space. It's more than I've got.

You got to start somewhere. Put some low watt incandesants on a ten light outdoor string like the contractors use. Ten 15 W CFL's will light your interior. 150 watts plus the string resistance plus the altitude, etc. Use colored spots, solar led's, or battery lights. Easy peasy. Cover your domes, get carpet or rugs down. Hang some fabric, etc...

Make a few signs. " No Theme Camp.", " No means No!", " Stone Soup Camp.", " Non-registered Generic Theme Camp." , " Do Nothing Camp."., " What, Me Register?." Don't laugh, it's paid For Camp.", " This Theme Camp is Your Camp.", " Humble Abode.", " Last Minute Camp." etc...

Use your imaginations, people. This is do-able, but just barely so.

Goddammit, where would burningman be if it didn't attract people who bit off more than they can chew? and then managed to rise to the occasion?
And why the fuck am I defending the eager newbies instead of snarking louder than the rest of you put together?
Anyway, go for it. It may not work this year, but you'll have something to build on for next year.

Good judgment comes from experience. Experience comes from poor judgment.

Have fun.

HEY...Just bring the damn domes to the desert...set them up...get really fucking trashed...and trust me...the idea will come to you on what its theme will be next year!

Hince how the Boobies happened!
A bunch of us, sitting round, getting shnookered laffing about booby trap doors!....Thank you Mister Jellyfish!

There was a influx of Frat boy action that year too...so wanna see Boobies? Stay home and look up BM on google earth...where you can see booby's on the playa and not even have to leave your comfy couch!

'zactly, Pinemom. There's nothing wrong with showing up and letting the camp's theme evolve itself.

Looking forward to the dancing dwarves.

Will they be in the 40" dome or the 30" dome?

Procrastination Camp usually starts gearing up in a week or so.
Maybe they will join forces?

Some camps refuse placement, signs, etc.

They just go.

They haven't even tore down last year's camp yet.

Love this place :o
No we are not an official theme camp. I looked into your eyes, and I lied.
Basically shit is getting thrown together to do what we can. I appreciate the snark and the ideas. Definitely hilariously last minute.

For those math geniuses who are judging us tiny people, come to our 40 inch dome and we shall stab you with a thousand push pins!

Please...do NOT cover your dome with some solid fabric or parachute. It'll grow wings and likely injure people as it blows away...I've seen it happen a few times. Anchor it down and cut plenty of BIG holes in whatever yer gonna cover it with. You'll still have ample shade. Enjoy

PSA off.
