Newbie question: When do you get into your "Costume&quo
I know, a million people have probably asked this question. But when do you get into what you'll be wearing? Before you get in, after you've set up, when a giant foghorn goes off and everyone darts off in separate directions?
Thanks for any help you provide me with, Adam.

But yes, wait until you are there at the event. The small towns you pass driving in, prefer "default world" clothes..........

To me a "costume" for the playa is wearable art, something you just feel like wearing, or something that is comfortable for the conditions. Many of those you'd feel comfortable wearing on the drive, others maybe not. Do whatever is easiest and feels right, that's part of what BM is about. And have no expectations or you'll be disappointed. Go expecting to learn a lot during the first few days, then it should just be about exploring looking for what you're not expecting to find.

Yeah, I know exactly what you mean. I should use a more appropriate term (Costume was the only word I could think ofMikeVDS wrote:To me a "costume" for the playa is wearable art, something you just feel like wearing, or something that is comfortable for the conditions. We rolled into a hot spring camp ground the night before Burning Man opened last year, and the second I saw naked women in the hot spring pool burning man started for me. Being in Japan, public baths and all, I didn't even bother with my swim suit, and just hopped in.
After the bath I started my first light necklace of the week, grabbed a bottle of Bacardi 8, and had fun at the camp fire.
I am very glad we had until midnight the next day to get to Burning Man though. That first hang over was killer, and I learned my first important lesson. Pace yourself. Followed closely by lesson #2: Hangovers suck 1000 times worse on the playa.... and lesson #3 was that hang overs go away when you drink enough PBR. It is a viscous cycle.
Not that you will be having much PBR. I was the first and last of the 2008 Dragon Krew to change into playa clothes though. That woman at the diner we stopped at sure stared at my Porn and Eggs tattoo for a long time though.

Hahahahaha, yeah that makes sense. Just had to find out what other people did.Ugly Dougly wrote:I've done a thundering herd of costume events over the millenia. What sucks worse is to be half-way there, lacking money for the tollbridge (or whatever) and have to stop for cash in the wrong part of town wearing your best "hey, I'm a freak" outfit.
Just sayin'.
Thanks, Adam
