Looking fro a camp that wants a sound system
hi,
we are ggsoundsystems and we are a little confused on if we will be able to find a place to set up because we are first-timers. we dont exactly know if we will be able to just show up and set up because of lack of info on getting a space in the large scale sound areas. If anyone has a camp that wants us to join them we have 4 martin audio wsx's and two custom void mid tops, we have everything we need to run our system,we even have djs, if you are willing to join up we would gladly love for you guys to throw down some sets with us. also if anyone can point me in the direction of where we can find out the info we lack please do.
thanks

Welcome to eplaya. The golden spike has been sunk, and the fences are going up. Most theme camps and villages are full. You must go to them at this late date, only a couple weeks till the gate opens. Noone will come to you. Some folks are already on the road. Really, you're doing this NOW?
Go back to the home page and read the newcomers guide, the survival guide, the ten principles. When you visit the playa this year, see what's up, then plan for next year. Large sound camps are at the 2 o'clock and 10 radial streets. They are easy to find. Maybe someone's equipment will fail and you can step in and be a hero, but don't count on it.

Hey Domotron. Nice to see you here... Don't worry about some of the snarky folks on here, they are just taking it way too serious.
Go to the Theme camp Registration and see if you can find a camp that's in need.
Most of the LSSA is of registered camps; you are way late in the game for that.
Check your PM's.

The survival guide outlines the rules for sound:
SOUND: Large-scale Sound Art Zones are located along the streets of 2 and 10 o'clock at the far ends of our settlements.
Within the city the maximum power amplification is 300 watts, producing no more than 90 decibels at 20 feet. Be thoughtful of your neighbors. If a problem with sound levels continues after sufficient warning, the device or system will be disabled. Mutant Vehicles with sound systems must follow the same sound guidelines when driving in the city, approaching camps or art installations.

All this is true, but we all know that if you setup and no one complains, that you're golden. Last year I had 2,500 watts, but I kept it at 90dB and the Rangers accepted it. Bring a sound meter out with you.AntiM wrote:The survival guide outlines the rules for sound:

a 600 watt amp is only in theory capable of 3dB more volume, so the dB level is a much better gauge of volume. 90dB @ 20' is still very loud - enough to cause hearing damage after a few hours. Not to mention that its also 95dB at source.

showing up with a sound system and no plan is fucking awesome. cruise around, meet people, and ask around for stories of people in need of a sound system. you'll be heroes! also, setting up renegade paries out in open playa is super cool too. plan to do *maybe* three parties. pick a spot out on open playa, way way far out, near a cool art piece, and spreadd the word. talk to artcars about having them show up at a certain time.
that said, IMO the very most boring an unoriginal thing someone can do is set up a sound system in BRC. and i'm no hater - i'm a DJ, in a bunch of DJ collectives, and i have set up DJ sound systems in BRC since 1995! you'll see when you attend, though, that there are FAR too many systems. people blasting a DJ system with no one dancing and no one hanging around. people who seem to think that volume = quality. you CAN NOT beat true quality.
seriously, i have already moved out of one beloved group camp because of how they insisted on BLARING music (BAD music!) way distorted and shitty from a set of old mackies. c'mon.

When I finally got a system that reproduces down to 20 hz flat, I found that my hunger for volume disappeared.
It really is only caused by the craving for realistic low end (or rampant stupidity).
What I always told people was adequate went out the window.
The reduction in distortion is clearly audible too, with reduced speaker transients ( the bass drivers don't work so hard if you have thousands of square inches of cone surface and/or turn them down.)
It's also amazing how much "hard rock" has no bottom end and how much low end there is in acoustic and jass.
So get your sound quality up and you don't need much volume.
There are examples on the playa, including one megawatt system that expresses this philosophy (Granted they are really fucking loud.).
Still, quality makes a difference.
Richard Hite (of Canned Heat, Bear's brother) played my house warming with the Wampus Cats and I could not get them to keep the levels down.
I asked them to bring a couple of amps and they brought everything, sound and lights.
Their sound was so clean though, that the next day I got compliments on the music from the elderly folks in the neighborhood.
And they played till four.

One thing you will notice is that many of the DJ's on the playa absolutely suck. They are horrible and would have no chance ever playing at any club or party in the real world, so they bring a system out to the desert and "play" with the hope that within the sheer number of people present, they will find fans.
Another thing you may notice is that the big sound camps often set up smaller side systems so that the sound engineers girlfriends can "learn to mix records" during the day...of all the annoying things I have ever heard, nothing was worse that listening to 2 sound systems (one on each side) piloted by some random chics who couldn't beatmatch to save their lives. Imagine listening to 4 hours of continuous trainwrecking per day, one trainwrecking dj per ear no less!
I say we enable a new policy for sound: If you can't mix, you are NOT allowed to operate a sound system of ANY size. If you fail to abide by this rule, you will be pepper sprayed.

Quite frankly i would not bring my soundsystem if i was you. for a few reasons. You will have to always have someone with it to protect it. You need to protect the equipment from the dust as it can ruin it very easily. While it would be fun to have it might be more fun to play at other camps for your first year and get the feel of what the week is like and prepare early for next year.

to add to curiousgnate's excellent advice, don't ever bring electronics to the playa that aren't disposable. You pretty much have to be resolved that whatever you bring WILL be destroyed. Now, I've certainly seem speakers go and come back functional, but you can't bet on it. Also, people don't realise how much of a pain it is to haul big things like speakers out there. Unless you have a van, minivan, etc you are bringing out which has the space, you are taking about a couple of grand to rent a van, plus gas, to get something out there. And lastly, I know for me at least, you spend your first year figuring out how to even get by on the playa. Mind you, I've seen virgins that take the the playa like a labrador to water, usually people that have done desert hiking / camping before ... but you usually spend your first year just figuring out how to get by.
so perhaps I'm reading your post wrong and you are REALLY saying "hey I have this sound system I'd like to gift to a camp, come get it and take it out with you if you want it" ... then that would be truly awesome and hats off to ya.
