Post Office?

Post by ultra violet » Tue Aug 25, 2009 9:37 am

I've seen the description of the "official" USPS mail camp from 2008 but can't find out what the post office situation is for this year. I'm planning to paint and pass out stamped postcards as my gift but I want to be sure this will be helpful, not obsolete. I'd also like to order some LED poi and have them delivered to the playa midweek instead of paying for extra fast shipping, but that's purely optional.

So can we send mail to the rest of the world? I would be happy to volunteer at such an establishment both for collection and in-camp distribution as well.

Their email address is at the bottom if you want specific details.

Also important to note - from what I hear, no stamps will be sold at the post office. I'm bringing 20 extra post card stamps, but I would suggest that anyone planning on mailing anything out should bring enough stamps for themselves, at least.

They don't seem to be real good at returning email, but they are definitely coming to the playa.

ETA: and I know this because a friend of mine has been a playa deliverer for them in years past and will be again this year. Also I think it's in the JRS.

You know that Black Rock City has its own post mark. I could scan one in, maybe later. I love YOUR idea. a gift that keeps on giving. hang me on your refer and think about burning man all year long.. yeah!

Oh, and your idea to receive mail on the playa.... gooood luck.. just mail stuff out and keep it simple for those govt workers who don't have enough good medication, you could drive them POSTAL!

I looked into this. Here's what I learned;

Outgoing Mail: You will need stamps and probably cards etc. Nothing will be for sale (obviously). Mail will be cancelled with our own official cancellation stamp and taken out to the Gerlach PO once a day.

Incomming mail.:
They will attempt delivery but no guarantees. It's a volunteer service and people can be very hard to find. If a signature is required then you will have to go to the BRC PO with ID to collect your item.

Your address should look like this:
(Default Name)(Playa name).
Name of your camp if any or distinguishing features).
Street address (7:30 and C for example) (C near 7:45 Man side for example) you get the idea.
C/O BRC PO
Gerlach NV 89412

Give as much detail as you can in the street address. But remember that it may be best to try "hold for pick up" and stop at the PO once a day to check.

Cheers

Oh, yeah, big time. bring your own stamps, cards etc they don't sell ya nothing, they will give you a LOAD OF SHIT, if you don't offer big french kisses (you better be kissable), or some other form of massage (and I don't mean touching) to get these government workers to do shit at burning man. I mean it. plan on abuse. say you like abuse. be happy with abuse. I love the abuse you can only get from BRCPO!! (professional abuse given freely)

Remember, the BRCPO bills its staff as "disgruntled postal workers". Expect to get a ration of shit no matter what. Enjoy it it the spirit it is given - it's all for fun.
