Burn Barrels

Post by Ugly Dougly » Fri Aug 07, 2009 11:05 am

How is it determined which theme camps get burn barrels and which don't?

Is there a decent supply of these things?

I think it changed around '07. They tried from about '05 I think to restrict burn barrels to BORG sanctioned and distributed ones. I think in '07 they changed it so that as long as you follow the rules (off the ground, etc) anyone could make and have a burn barrel.

why do they call them "burn barrels"?

for me, as soon as the stuff inside is gone, they go out......I can't get them to burn at all........

confirmation?

Post by yamaz » Thu Aug 27, 2009 12:14 am

Can anyone confirm if you are allowed to bring burn barrels or not? I have a small 16 gallon burn barrel I made for an art project at a local regional burn and I was wondering if I might be able to bring it and some wood....burn it and haul out the ash legally?

Thx!

The key phrase is " do no harm."

Elevate the metal bottom off the playa so you do not scorch it. Most people use cinder blocks or brick. I've seen some handcrafted ones that were very beautiful and well made. A piece of close spaced hardware cloth over the top will prevent embers flying up and torching the camp next door. Open flames mean a watch person is required. Do not throw whippits, ammo, or "empty" propane canisters in the barrell. People have been injured from flying moop.

That being said, "Safety Third."

there are very specific rules for having burn barrels. the have to be off the ground, always attended, no burning of toxic stuff, fire extinguishers, certain radius from anything that can burn ie tents etc. the biggest thing is always attended until they are completely!!!!!! 100% out. check bm website for specifics

ooh, ooh, ooh, can I do it? Please? Pretty please?

Dougly - a (very) little querying on the main Bman site shows this http://www.burningman.com/environment/r ... rning.html
which links to this http://www.burningman.com/installations ... ntion.html
And then this http://www.burningman.com/themecamps/re ... #open_fire which may be more to the point

Among the three it should tell you everything you need to know.

How about a little self reliance, hmmmm?

/snark

Ok, now THAT one was fun.

And don't forget to get your ashes hauled.

Thanks a lot SD, I apologize for not telling you that I had already visited those pages.

They don't answer my question - which I could have asked more clearly, to wit:

"For those of us who can't or won't make or buy their own burn barrels, are there any available to theme camps?"

Yeah, I thought that one was too easy to be true. In my defense, everyone else seems to have jumped to the same wrong conclusion as I did, that you're looking for the rules and regs of HAVING a burn barrel not the process for GETTING one.

See you out there!

Well 99% of BM is what you can get away with.

Once upon a time some of the larger theme camps got placement of a barrel. Then that shifted to placement usually at the keyholes. Now if you want a barrel you bring a barrel. Same for the wood.

I have a plasma cutter, but, no room to haul a barrel..........I'm totally packed......
but, could cut designs in one if you want to pick it up here.

We are fleeing the city early Saturday. Don't sweat it, a burn barrel is on the "nice to have" list.

It's Burningman, there will be multiple places to roast our twinkies.
