Forget playa buggers - there are no bugs - Ranger Rumor

Post by phil » Tue Aug 25, 2009 7:23 pm

From today's email from the playa:
I have been onsite for a couple of days. The Playa is hard There is no doubt that there will be some dust, but nothing like last year. If you have not selected your camping location the south side is a bit less dusty than the north. Someone on the Rangers List started a rumor that there are a lot of Mosguitos this year. Based on that, everyone in my camp brought some bug repellant. Whoever started the rumor must be laughing. There are no bugs. The city got rotated clockwise 15 degrees. Amazingly everything seems to be in the wrong place from that minor change.

There are bugs every year.

Try working at night with big lights and you will see them, especially in the first few days of setup.

Beware of frogbats also, they will take a nasty chunk out of your hide without you seeing them coming.
We have an obligation to make space for everyone, we have no obligation to make that space pleasant.

This is a really interesting observation--I hadn't thought about how much of my view of a location in the city was the hills in the distance. But it's substantial.

That's why everyone should bring a mosquito net....I had one set-up in my tent last year, and not a single mosquito bit me...... :D

(OK... the netting was just for effect and looked nice, I didn't really bring it to stop bugs from bothering me....)

Hey... that might be fun....

The thiem this year is Evolution..... so what if we post, and tell everyone all about the mutated , DDT resistant Arab (or South American,... depends on who we want to be raciest about.) mosquito's, out on the Playa sucking everyone's blood and spreading Swine Flu.... If we can figgure out a way to make them responsible for the National Debt... so much the better....

I wasn't going to be bringing the netting this year, but maybe I should .... just to be safe....

A good place to start rumors is at Greeter Station. Once the Greeters (think they) know about something, then everyone will "know".

Or at Will-Call.

Kids, can you say "Culture Jamming"? I knew you could.

I knew that there was a good reason I got those H1N1 and Pneumonia shots last Thursday. Those Army docs have all the best new meds. I have my bug net too, a very nice one made to fit a large canopy bed I'll hang under my shade structure. I bring my own hand sanitizer too, hung on a necklace. I don't touch those pump posts outside the potty banks anymore. I have my own hospital style bedside commode in my third tent. I hear that in the MJ Camp there is an oxygen chamber, but you have to bring your own canister.

Also the President does the fist bump for a good reason... wash your hands.

These sons-a-bitches just aren't anything to f* with. Almost walked into one while playing golf at Disney World a few years ago. The scale is absolutely correct, kiddies.

Disney world?
That's an australian spider.

Though I have heard of some lively spiders in california.
I have a friend who is still traumatized after spending a night on the road with spiders all over the car trying to get in.
Probably not deadly though.

Banana Spider. I can fully attest that they live in Florida too. Maybe not the exact same species, but gawd-awful nonetheless.

EDIT: Also, World = Florida Land = California. I work for the Disney Animation Studio, so Disney World is a really cheap treat.

I'll be geocaching in Tasmania in February. Guess that's one more thing I'll have to watch out for.
You know it's going to be a bad day when you jump out of bed and miss the floor.

Hide and seek has got to be worth risking death by crawly things.

Tasmanian funnelweb

Although I guess it does add some excitement to it all.

Contrary to current reports, there was a recent death by funnelweb, resulting from a bite leading to being eaten by dingoes.
