Assuming this wasn't asked with an underlying judgement that BDSM is just wrong/sick/deviant. I'll say that my experience talking to folks says that if you ask 10 people you'll get at least a dozen diferent answers. For me Bondage, at it's core, is a huge release. Issues of guilt over enjoying sex, personal atractiveness or skill in bed all become irrelvant if you have no choice but to hang on and enjoy the ride. It's about being in touch with your most primal self, your Id, without your Supperego getting in the way. (to use Freudian language). Others will have different reasons but I felt your question deserved one real answer.
Happiness or misery is a choice that's always available to us.
