Where some questions belong...

I second this. Eplaya is run by the BM LLC and thus they have to be somewhat careful about what gets said here. If you want to ask questions about alcohol to minors, drugs, whatever, I suggest going to http://bm.tribe.net or Orkut or any of the Burning Man forums on the net NOT run by BM LLC. The BM organization has no connection to Tribe or Orkut and thus no responsibility so you're much more likely to get unvarnished answers to sticky questions.

It was a really stupid question to ask in the first place (my OT) but i asked it out of curiosity and lack of sleep. I'm not big on alcohol, but i have wanted to ty absinthe, is all. But trust me, you guys have made me think twice. And then a third time. And now im pissed cuz i dont wanna do it anymore, but im happy cuz u guys r right n u care. sorry bout me go-n shorthand im n a hurry. i love u guys. l8r.

I was 16 when i first went to burning man, age really has little to do with how one handles it. I am your age...

You do sound like you have a great deal of growing to do. If you cant see that just because you dont think someone will approach you for sex... doesnt mean it wont happen. There are so many people there, you WILL be someones type. Also Drugs and alcohol really alter ones mind and some people get a little crazy on it and act like idiots. Its always wise to venture out with someone else with you. Its just not too smart...

As for absinthe, i am not 100% sure what it is, but if it is a drug, it will be on this website http://www.erowid.org/psychoactives/psychoactives.shtml I strongly suggest you go find it and look it up. Read about it and then make an educated choice. And this goes for anyone else who is thinking about being any type of drug for the first time at burning man or not.

You will grow and change over time, it will happen naturally. Burning Man could aid you in growing infact. And i am sure it will. Just try to mentally prepare yourself for the playa in 2005. And if you need someone to talk to, who has been there and is close to your age, you are welcome to e-mail me. I will gladly help in any way i can.

Go in good health,

Stuart: What, you mean you don't like that burning sensation?

Jaykatski: Yeah, absinthe's illegal in the states. It was thought to cause nervous system damage at one time and the ban was never lifted. This has led a lot of Americans (including myself, until fairly recently) to think it must be a hallucinogen, because we all know the US gov't only bans really fun drugs.

_tears_: Erowid's an awesome site. I always go there before trying something new.

absinthe

Post by sparkletarte » Wed May 05, 2004 4:36 pm

Oh, too bad it's illegal in the states, I was starting to think about bringing some down from Canada. I love it. I don't think it tastes like licorice- maybe that's the non-wormwood version. It's the wormwood in there that is toxic in large amounts. It's also an anti-parasitic. AD, if you do try absinthe, it's important to only have 1 or at the most 2 ounces, and no more. It's something to save for very special occasions.
Too bad, I thought I'd come across a great gift. Perhaps some Canadian beer will have to do.

i wasnt saying it was about age. the age thing is that im 17 and under my 'rents choke hold and theres no way in hell theyd let me go this year. also, *smiles sheepishly* me and erowid and VERRRRRRRRRRRRY good friends. i used to do dextromethorphan, it was pretty popular among the "alternative lifestyle" kids around here. still is, but most of us have quit since Daniel died.... *gets teary eyed*.... anyway, im a walking alternative drug dictionary. well, not a very concise dictionary. maybe a crappy FAQ. huh. lol im laughing at myself in my own post. what a dork.

In my case it was all those haloes around lamps and stars in the Van Gogh paintings that made me think that. The problem of being a jr. culture vulture.

Aerodrown,
The Onion (an internet news parody website) once did a fake story about a young stoner planning his first trip to Burning Man. I guess I was just wondering if you were for real or putting us on.

lol im not a big stoner, either. i mean, i did dxm a few times, smoked pot about six times total in my life.... i just do a lot of research prior to doing *anything*. im a very safe drug abuser, even though i dont do anything anymore. i would, i just dont have a way to. that and i lov psychoactives, but i dont want my life to only exist when intoxicated like it does for most junkies.

Hey! The Onion is where I get all my information on Burning Man!!!

(Well, okay, a former employee of the Onion is one of my sources of information on Burning Man, and, no, I don't believe he was the author of any of the BM articles in the Onion..., the timing would have been wrong.)

It may be illegal, but it's still available(like a lot of other illegal stuff).

A buddy of mine here in Chattanooga, who's a lawyer no less, orders absinthe off the internet from soewhere in eastern europe (from the Czech Republic, I believe). They ship it to him over here in Etats-Unis, sans probleme! He was a little worried that he might have to go down to US customs in Atlanta to pick it up or something like that, but FedEx or UPS or whoever delivered the imported absinthe right to his doorstep.
...but it seemed like such a good idea at the time...

Absinthe

Post by Ranger Genius » Thu May 13, 2004 12:39 pm

Yeah, absinthe's illegal in the states. It was thought to cause nervous system damage at one time and the ban was never lifted.
It breaks down like this: Absinthe (and other Thujone-laced drinks) is a class 3 substance. It's legal to own, it's legal to drink, and it's legal to make it, as long as you're not distilling your own alcohol (most home kits are infusing wormwood into existing alcohol such as Everclear anyway, so that's okay). It's ILLEGAL to SELL or DISTRIBUTE it, though sharing it at a private party doesn't count as distribution.

There ARE legal ways to get it imported into the country, but not as a beverage. Basically it works like this: You buy a collectible absinthe bottle from, say, the Czech Repbulic (most common source). You're not buying ABSINTHE, and you must at no time refer to it as absinthe. You're buying a BOTTLE. The fact that the collectible bottle contains its original contents only adds to its collectibility. Once you own the bottle, you can do as you like with the contents. But do NOT order more than three bottles in a shipment. Customs may seize your shipment and you'll have to answer a lot of very uncomfortable questions from some very humorless men.

Well said. When I returned from my honeymoon in Africa, Turkey and Amsterdam, the customs agent at LAX insisted on scouring every last inch of my luggage. Okay, that's fair.. it's his job. Never mind that it was 1am and I was dead tired, he proceeded to drill me with questions not-so-cleverly disguised as small talk. "So what do you do?" "Engineer, eh? Do you remember physics?" Turns out this supercop was a physics major and he proceeded to DRILL ME with questions about electricity and magnetism! I'd been flying for about 16 hours and hadn't slept in about 24, and this yahoo expects me to remember the formula for determining the field around a charged sphere, which for the record I learned but about TEN FREAKIN' YEARS AGO!

I'm sure he didn't care whether or not I really remembered the answers, but I'll bet that he was trying to keep me talking to see if I was lying about something, including the contents of my luggage.

And for those wondering, we had no illegal substances in our luggage but we did have several pounds of spices and henna -- wrapped super tight in paper/duct tape packages that each looked like about a kilo of cocaine. Thankfully he didn't really take notice of THOSE.

So what the fuck WAS he looking for? I'm reminded of the flying circus sketch with the obvious clock smuggler returning from switzerland..all of whose clocks and alarm clocks and watches chime during the search, and then the clergyman behind him gets manhandled. I guess there's an SNL sketch along the same line, with pounds of white poweder pouring out of the suitcase. Yeah.

Being California, I'm pretty sure he was looking for fruit.

("well, these one-kilo packages can't possibly contain grapefruit so we'll just put those back in the backpack...")

No, but I'm sure you could get a good pruno going with SecurePath Grapefruit soda and some shoe polish.
