Nitrous Oxide
I've done a lot of nitrous and I've never noticed any asshole loosening. Maybe I'm just a tightass.
I wonder if the cold from a cracker opening a whippit would show up on the fancy infrared gear that BLM uses to catch bowls being sparked in tents...

New Culprit Seen in Ozone Depletion: Burningman
Published: August 27, 2009
Government scientists who study the depletion of Earth’s protective ozone layer are pointing to a previously unheralded culprit: nitrous oxide.
Most of the nitrous oxide in the atmosphere emerges naturally, through the action of bacteria in the soil, the researchers say. But the gas is also produced by human activity such as the Burning Man event in Nevada"

Know thy drug
Ok NO2 is a chemical compound. Medical vs. auto, there is no difference. Well there wasn’t until the gov. got involved. Some where in the 80's they realized we were having too much fun. They added something to the nitrous in the auto nitrous that made it smell like a sewer. Ruined the buzz enjoyment. Haven't done it for so long that I can't attest to it still being used. Damage from use was from improper usage. Inhaling from a balloon was used in case you held your breathe too long or inhaled too much and passed out, the balloon would take off. With a mask, well you passed out and you kept breathing. Next week you were riding the short bus. Take a scuba diving class and you will learn about the effect of messing with the body’s gas intake. Immune, not a chance. It is basic biology. Do it in moderation and enjoy. As with anything you put into your body, you are the one that needs to have enough knowledge to make the decision. This includes your daily food intake. Sushi rocks!

NOS! The herald angels sing
Glory to the whipped cream king
Peace on earth and wah-wahs wild
Suck it up in legal style
Berkley Farms and Reddi-Whip
Really gave us all a trip
Lechter's sells it by the case
Suck some down and lose your face
NOS! The herald angels sing
Glory to the whipped cream king!
I swear, I spent most of the late '80s and early '90s buzzed on nitrous. It is virtually the reason my fanzine Cœnobium existed. We always started and punctuated a publishing session with a big hit of NOS.
However! Yes, keep those canisters OUT of the fire, and know that the stuff is going to get harder to find. Not because of any legality issues, but because it's been recently found to be the #3 greenhouse gas behind methane and carbon dioxide.

Re: Nitrous Oxide
so far no one has answered the critical question.
what is the LEOs attitude towards recreational N2O use on the playa.
let's assume I'm cracking whippits on the open playa. will I be arrested? fined? will they just ignore me?

seems a question, only LEO can answer, since, they're all individuals.
But, you could try it, and report back the result.
Speculation on what someone, let alone a group of people, will do given a set of circumstances, seems tough, at best.

my last time around (8 years ago) i remember this dude cracking balloons right next to the man on Wednesday afternoon. but this was ages ago. also from what I've seen on the web neither Nevada state Nor the feds have any explicit laws against Nitrous (Cal state do have them).
Shit, where was i for the last week... ehm...

In 2009 a d-bag in our camp claimed to have been searched after being seen taking whippets in front of a big sound camp. He was less then trustworthy so take that story as you will.

Re: Nitrous Oxide
Around 1995 or so when I first started blowing glass, I was picking up an oxy cylinder at the local welding store.. when I finally got the gumption to ask.. "So.. what does it take to get a N2O rental"? The guy asks.. "What are you doing with it?" To which i paused.. and he says with a slight smirk.. "Racing cars?". I smiled and nodded and agreed. He pulls out some papers for me to sign.. and off I walked with 2 full N2O cylinders.
No WAY I'm thinking the whole way home. I did NOT just pick up 2 full cylinders of what I think I just did. There has to be something wrong here. Sure as shit, we get home.. crack it into a balloon.. and holy mary mother of god, it was 100% pure, beautiful N2O.
Those tanks made their rounds at barter fairs for years.
Ahh.. the good ol' days of brain cell destruction without an afterthought. Now I know too much to do crap like that to myself on a regular basis. I limit myself now to just a week in the end of August each year..
No, but seriously. The papers they made me sign listed it as being a federal offense if I knowingly let anyone wantonly inhale anything from this tank. It was a whole mini-stack signing my life and liability away. While the actual huffing I don't think is illegal, the act of letting someone do it from a tank that you own sure as hell is. YMMV.
if you're that interested in getting a tank, go talk to a welding store and see what they want from you. Call around.. give 'em a BS story about racing cars and needing to do tank re-fills. The smaller independently stores desperate for business won't give a shit as much as the chain stores.
