Burningmanish?!? WTF!
Burningmanish?!? WTF!
So ive been going to BM for many years since 96. Who fucking cares right. Anyways, people like to coin the tern "Burningmanish" these days. Well, Tell me. What the fuck does that mean these days with people??
So In retaliation I came up with a new fancy term as well. Fuckin yuppie tourists. (watch for the shirt in 2010)
My term implies that we as a community who work our asses off pre, during and post event experience such a side show as fuckin yuppie tourists. Now that being said, I want to kinda give you an explanation of what one of these strange playa creatures are.
*Random cowboyhat
*Male wearing shirt swindled from buddies dehydrated girlfriend after foundling her while passed out
*Goggles picked up at Wadsworth gas station
*Camelback backpack that has been missing water since monday night opening
How to know when you are in fuckin yuppie tourist territory.
*They have about enough water for 2 days for one person but is suppose to cover 4 people.
*There is constant arguing and bickering going on about stupid shit usually someone is hurting someones feelings.
*They are complete spectators and have a sense of entitlement thats just doesnt quite mess well.
Is it me or did anyone else experience such a majestic creature?

greeting
i agree there are a shit ton of fyt. Me and my unofficial theme camp we're finally allowed to greet this year on wednesday morning, and showed up 35 strong. we assaulted the incomers with fabulous costumes and hugs and dust angels etc. but there were an unusually high number of fyt peeps who wouldn't even get out of their cars. a few even locked their car doors as we approached, which might have been due to my tina turner hair after she got the shit beat out of her put still put Ike in the motha fuckin hospital, and the skirt I was wearing, im a guy too. but jeez. we got some to ring the bell etc, but most took a lot of persuading. they didn't want to get dusty, I would have loved to see them on sat. after a few days. lets go back to 96 numbers, maybe get rid of some of the fcr's too(fucking candy ravers)!
lol
Seems like the classic old timers feeling from any scene, you were BORN on the playa and did nothing but shit originality. Hows about you jump in, say hi to those folks, and help them make more of their week?

I didnt shit originality on the playa, but I did get a sense of community my first year that really put things into perspective. What really gets me is the fact that this was some of the FYTs 2-3 year into the burn. I guess in a sense you cant dictate what should be burningmanish BUT to me what still exists is the feeling of accomplishment and friends you make from just really being who you are.
I do however spend some time re hydrating complete strangers, wondering how our honda generator walked off in the middle of the day (I know, chain it up) and telling people to slow the fuck down.
Radical self-reliance FTW!

Guess I'm a FYT
I got a straw cowboy hat at a thrift store for $1 and wore that to keep the sun off. I wandered around and made friendly and drank. I wore mismatched cast-offs and homemade necklaces. I have no idea but that Real Burners took me for a FYT. Oh the fuck well.

yep, sure sounds like that to me. Seems like people maybe do not understand so well how attention and behavior function. We cannot all be stars all the time... if someone wants to be star all the time that makes it so others get less attention.
It was a novel experience for me. However, I could have used less attention when I would not be doing anything and more attention when I needed some form of an audience. I found it difficult to participate in verbal social behavior, but that is not out of the ordinary for me.
Maybe the problem has to do with social roles being static rather than spontaneous.
Such a grand experiement in behavior! Though I do have my doubts about the intentions of some of the parties involved in the event.
At one point I was wrapping my mind around the inhumane possiblities that the event may invite from govt agencies. The apparent crowd control aspects were worrisome at times. But there are a lot of important people who show up and we/you may need the factors that effective crowd control may entail.

It's very refreshing to encounter a non-synical old timer
I'm running across a lot of people who have been coming to Burning Man for years and some of them seem jaded and unloving and harsh and angry and oh so sarcastic. I come from a place of love and I hope that some people could drop their know-it-all ego and just be present in the now.

yeah.. I'm not so much for rolling in the dust upon arrival. I prefer to get dusty naturally as the day progresses. The greeters have always been kewell for me.. they never push to hard for anything I don't want to do. I had two flat tires on my way out this year & wasn't really in a "greeters" mood upon arrival.. it was fine though. collected my hug & was on my way !

oh,, but back on subject. I did see a guy make fun of my neighbor for wearing cargo shorts. Which I though was VERY rude..
my "cargo wearing" neighbor was bad ass. He's an ex marine who helped everyone set up.. gave knot tying lessons, gave us all "tramp stamps",, explored the city with reckless abandon & partied his ass off not hurting or bagging on anyone..
be careful who you "punk on" they may be keweller thay you !
rock the cargo shorts if you want to !!

He needed to prove his manliness by wearing a sarong or a kilt? How edgy and counter-culture-y!Boijoy wrote:oh,, but back on subject. I did see a guy make fun of my neighbor for wearing cargo shorts. Which I though was VERY rude..

Sometimes I wear a sarong, but only if I desire to feel my ballsweat evaporating and I don't have any work to do.
Nothing says "comfort" quite like the cool breeze from down below.
I sometimes wish I had the energy and time to enjoy it that a lot of the FYTs seem to have.
I also would have a lot less targets for my squirtgun without them.

Hey, that know-it-all attitude is based on years of experience.AlexArndt wrote:I'm running across a lot of people who have been coming to Burning Man for years and some of them seem jaded and unloving and harsh and angry and oh so sarcastic. And I'm the nice one.
[vent]I had people criticize me on a couple of occasions for not dressing "burny enough". What can I say? Light colored linen and silks feel good in the heat of the desert. Fishnets and fairy wings, not so much.
And yes, my pink cowboy hat does look quite touristy. I was born in Texas and it was a gift from my family from a true cowboy hat maker in Texas. Wasn't purchased for Burning Man.
I found it quite funny to find myself once again finding that people "rebelling" against standards of society create their own standards. [/vent]
