Please help... How do I get intouch with Lawyers for Burners

Post by MsKinetik » Tue Sep 15, 2009 7:43 am

Help please...

2009 was my first year at Burning Man. I not only lost my V to Burning Man... but also to Law Enforcement. I was arrested out side of Elko on the ride home.

I need to get in touch with Lawyers for Burners but the only thing I can find is an endless loop to their page that has the link to their page.

www.lawyersforburners.com just keeps linking to the same opening page and I can not find any contact information.

I really really really need to get in touch with someone who might be able to point me in the right direction. I want to report my incident and connect with someone who might know of a good attorney who's helped other burners.

Crap! I've never been in any trouble before and .. this is Fing scary to deal with.

I will be getting in touch with the Nevada ACLU but there is only email form and they 'might' get back in touch.

If anyone can help me connect with the right people to recommend a lawyer... I would be extremely grateful.

Thank you and Namaste,
MsKinetiK

That website is really annoying. I tried finding actual contact info too and couldn't....Please do complete the questionnaire they posted online though. It will help them to get feedback on your incident.

Here's a link to a thread where someone asked a similar question and got a lawyer's contact info.

Good luck

I think you need to fill out their "Feedback Form" and then they will contact you. It's worth a try.

The latest edition of Jackrabbit Speaks has this to say:

Code: Select all

LAW ENFORCEMENT FEEDBACK

Did you have or witness an encounter with law enforcement on the playa? Whether it was positive or negative, we want to know about it. We use this information to work yearround with law enforcement officers to improve our relations, improve their interactions with our community, and to ensure your constitutional and civil rights are being protected while in Black Rock City. And we can't be successful in that effort if we don't have your stories.

So please, take a moment to download, fill out and mail us a Law Enforcement Feedback Form (PDF), here:

LAWYERS FOR BURNERS

If you got arrested or received a citation on playa, don't feel like you're in it alone. A grassroots, volunteer organization called Lawyers For Burners may be able to help you out with finding a lawyer and/or legal advice. Visit their website for more information:

I don't think the information from JRS is very helpful.

There's no contact information on that website, save for to give them money or to provide services if a lawyer.

We previously had someone post on eplaya who had filled out the feedback form on playa and was looking for contact information because the laywers for burners website did not have contact information. It doesn't appear that completing out the feedback form results in being contacted any time soon.

Thanks for the responses. At least it's proof that I'm not the only one who has had problems with this.

Next question.. does anyone know anyone at Burning Man I can connect with to try to get in touch with lawyers for burners. I'm sure someone knows how to get in touch with these people.

Looks like might be time to dig in other places?

Still looking. Need help urgently.

Thanks!

You tried contacting the lawyer from the other thread with no luck, huh?

If and when you do find a contact, please update this thread in case others are asking.

I used to live in Elko, if you end up in front of Molly Leddy, even a good lawyer won't do you any good, that is if your charge is drug related.

Follow up on Lawyers for Burners

Update:

I was able to get in touch with www.lawyersforburners.com

If you go to their web site there is a link in the top left hand corner called *feedback*.

That is the link where you enter all your information about your encounter with law enforcement.

I filled it out and they contacted me within 24hrs. So yes this form is read by a real human.

In my particular case, because I was arrested outside of BM, they were not able to take my case. However; they did provide names of some lawyers to contact so I'm grateful for the referrals.

Thanks for the comments and help!

Hope this may be helpful to others.

Some additional information that may be helpful. There is apparently a rating system for lawyers. I contacted an atty in my state to seek assistance with understanding how to select an atty in Nevada. In my case I was arrested in Northen Nevada. I wasn't clear if it was better to hire an atty from the local area where I was arrested or to hire a big gun from Reno or Las Vegas.

I have been encouraged by my local guy to consider working with the highest ranked atty in the county where I was arrested. The reason being that he has an established reputation and is familiar with the local courts etc.

(If anyone feels differently, feel free to share on this.)

At this point I am going to talk with the attys that were recommended to me by LFB, and also talk to the atty I have found.

One thing is for sure. Researching an atty and getting one that has has success with similar cases is VERY important.

I was even told that I can have my atty represent me in court and if I sign some papers I don't have show up.

I have talked to someone who has done that before and their atty took care of everything and it worked out fine.

I'm not sure I"m going to do that. After all it's my life in my hands and I'm leary of not being there to hear how I am represented.

I have been advised that it may be good to start community service locally now before trial as well at beginning to take 'drug classes'. Essentially that would show that judge that your motivated to make changes and showing effort. Of course that depends how you plea.

A lot of people have opinions and I have gotten a lot of different 'opinions' from everyone from friends to the cops to the bailer on possible out comes ect. Some of that has swng me around a lot, with people talking about worst case scenarios and best case scenarios. Each case is different so you can't put a lot of stock in how things have turned out for different people. In the end what really matters is talking to an atty who knows the laws and probable outcomes and can actually take your case.

Again hope this was helpful!
Thanks again everyone! Sincerely!!! Namaste and keep shinin' on.
