I am not worried about the event. I am concerned about the long trip carrying thousands of dollars worth of camera gear. I am not advocating firing tracers at hippies and shirtcockers. Or even displaying a firearm. I am talking about exercising the basic right to defend my property and my life while traveling. Anyone displaying or firing a weapon on the playa should be arrested. That would be very different to just having an unloaded firearm locked in a steel box bolted to my vehicle.

It's my choice. And I have agreed to give up some of my basic rights to attend a private event on public land. I wasn't using my civil liberties anyway :)

This often means removing the firing pin and in the case of the USPS mail, shipping the pin separately.
Other people may have differing opinions, but when it comes to this, they don't count.
ATF writes the rules.
Common sense must be used, of course.
Actually, the USPS and ATF rules pertaining to firearms are very cut and dried.

For intrastate, as long as it is an NFA compliant long gun, any individual 18 years or older my mail a long gun, sans ammunition, to another individual 18 years or older in the same state. No disassembly of any kind or licensing required.

Mailing a long gun interstate or a handgun requires licensed firearms dealer at both ends of the mailing process.

Simply pulling the firing pin will not circumvent this. The registered receiver portion of the firearm (the part marked by a serial number) is considered a firearm per the ATF. You can mail every other part of a firearm without issue,
You think someone is more or less dangerous with or without a gun?
You're a fool.
It only makes a difference at a distance.
That is why it works for self defense.
No, it makes a difference based on their training with a firearm.

Someone trained in CQB tactics will be very effective with a firearm regardless of distance.

Probably not.
I'm not a gun fanatic but for a long road trip I would rather have a gun and not need it than need a gun and not have it...and that is my constitutional right.
Provided you are in compliance with local and state law of the areas you are traveling through.

Federal law, in terms of transporting a firearm, only allows you to carry said firearm unloaded in a secured location in the trunk or furthermost rear area of your vehicle separate from the ammunition for the firearm.

As a very PRO-firearms person, I understand you're position. And, I can't understand how anyone would care if you kept the weapon locked up...can't you still do that? But, being dead set on having a firearm with you at all times, raises red flags. I lived in West Oakland way back when, and having a firearm would/could only make a situation worse...my neighbors were nuts. Go Plano East Panthers!
anything worth doing is worth overdoing..

To the best of my understanding it is against the rules to have any type of firearm of any form on site during the event. Of course if someone choose to violate that rule and kept their weapon hidden and locked away in their private vehicle, who would even know?

Capsmashy,

I think you may be confusing transfer with normal shipping, as for modification, etc
I have run into this when sending things into a factory for work.

Those of us in normal states can now carry in most of the country, big exceptions being california, oregon and washington.

If you, as an individual, are shipping to a licensed manufacturer for either warranty work or modifications to the registered portion of the firearm, the ATF does have provisions for this form of shipping. The firearm does not need to be disassembled in anyway for this kind of shipment.

However, if it is anything other than an NFA compliant long gun being shipped intrastate, USPS regulations require a licensed dealer at each end of their portion of the journey. FedEx or UPS are your only option sat that point and each have their own requirements pertaining to firearm shipping.

Any other type of work, that does not involve the shipment of the registered portion of the firearm, such as getting a barrel mounted to the upper receiver portion of an AR-15, having the internals on a handgun slide reworked, etc, can be shipped by any means from an individual to an individual with no licensee of any type being necessary in the process.

A couple years ago I was riding on top of the starwars jawa MV and in one neighborhood there was this guy that came out of his lil RV, pointed his pistol in the air and shot one off. Keep in mind, the ride I was on was 20' from him and I was up high. I thought, what an idiot. Then I relished in the fear of danger and smiled. Ya, there's still church going shooters at BM!

Here's a great little vid...
