I get in early on Sunday, Work my ass off to put Transmorphagon online. Then at the opportune moment, we whip out the clippers and cut my hair (which has been growing since my annual Tequila and Tamale Party around Cinco de Mayo) into a Mohawk.
Then I'm truly home.

The Biggest Distraction... Funk On the Playa, Live uncut Funk, TheBomb, Comin at you from the Transmorphogon, 500 Kilowatts of Pure Funk Power. You Will be groovin'. So when yer sick of the Boomp Boomp of the Burn, come down to the T-Dome and Learn....
i try to get some sleep starting around 10 or 11am and try to push it till around 2 0r 3pm, everyday. sometimes i can get away with laying down for just an hour and a half and be ok, but last year i missed my daily nap and was an extra wreck for the temple burn. after fighting our way home thru the whiteout, i passed out until 6am.
so, 3-5 hours sleep (give our take an hour)
i walk really slow. i mean, REALLY slow. mostly, its standing, but scenery goes by a lil at a time. it makes navigating easier, and doesn't fuck up my crappy blood pressure. but i got away with walking about fifteen miles a day barefoot without any detriment to my feet, so i have great faith in the practice.

1) Arrive 12:01am Monday (or as close as we can get) and set up most of the camp in the middle of the night while it's cool and (usually) not dusty.
2) Greeter shift Tuesday 8am-noon
3) Pack up camp Sunday, go to sleep immediately after the Temple Burn. Get up at dawn Monday and get in line early
4) Eat at Black Bear Diner in Alturas on the way home. Milkshakes!!!

Every year, somewhere between Klamath Falls, OR and Alturas, CA, I'll see this huge boat ahead of me being pulled on a trailer. I'll take my foot off the gas so I don't pass it too fast - usually I'm doing 80+ and the truck/boat trailer about 55 - then as I blow by I stick my arm out the window and give Captain Goddammit the one finger salute.
It's a tradition, what can I say?

Wow. I live in KF and have never eaten there, though I keep wanting to. Your recommendation may do it. My tradition is to make it all week, no injuries, and drive that big old, very old I might add, motorhome home.

I ride my bike (well try to ride) every street in BM at least twice so I can see the difference just a few days makes.
I write the name and story of the one person I loathe in life and wish would simply die a horrible death. The temple is my attempt to heal from this little prick. Its helping - four or five more years may do it.
I like to barf once or twice from drinking to excess,
I like to dance until the sun comes up.
These are just a few of the things i do regularly.

It's a little known fact that Reno is the world headquarters for all-you-can-eat sushi! I crave it on the playa to it's the first thing I do when I get back. Avoid the casinos. The strip mall joints are usually pretty good.

Indian Tacos at the place about 30 miles south of Empire on the way out. Solo bike ride to the Man and the Temple. Greeters shifts and Coffee Cafe shifts. Seek out a massage (got an incredible one this year!) eplaya M&G on Thursday. Sleep away at least most of one afternoon... usually Thursday.
A plan is what you vary from.

Some of the traditions are more recent, and I feel that I'm leaving some out.
-- assist at all of the BED workshops (5 years)
-- get up before dawn to take pictures at least one day
-- indian tacos on the way out
-- volunteer for exodus (3 years)
-- take pictures of the burn
-- tear up when I get there and when I have to leave

Injury
There is always, it seems a minor injury during preparation. This year, I didn't have one, and in Reno was thinking how nice that was. And then shortly after that whacked my head hard enough to bleed on a shelf in the RV!
Other traditions:
Getting there 18-24 hours after the planned arrival time.
Putting on Radio Free Burning Man, now BMIR, as we leave, and listening as it fades into static. (Sooner these days, less power.)
Trip to the apex point of the trash fence, photo out into the playa.
Greeting the greeters. Asking them if they are drinking enough water, making sure they know what's in the survival guide.
At least 2 or 3 episodes of camp drama.
Fancy casino buffet in Reno on the way out. Usually Atlantis though Harrah's is better but harder to park and RV with trailer at.
Gasp at first glimpse of size of the city.

I like this thread, fun read.
~Kombucha, pickles, olives.
~find some live music at some point in the week
~Random Rab (the only DJ I truly want to see)
~BMIR radio upon entry and exit
~spray sunblock
~some kind of vanilla amber essential oils
~wine in a water bottle
~watch sunrise at temple at least once
~Find an album release that is new to me pre burn, listen to it a week prior and a week after for personal sound track. This is my most important tradition I do it seems. Everything else just falls into place around that ;) This year, it was the New Pornographers. Now every time I listen to it Im going to think, BURNING MAN 09, BABY
Im just super music sensitive.

OMG!! Funny you should mention that. We were craving it out on the playa too! The night after we got home, straight to sushi! Sushi Time on Vista is some good stuff! (Lot's of parking for bigger vehicles, in Safeway/Bully's parking lot)Mister Jellyfish Mister wrote:It's a little known fact that Reno is the world headquarters for all-you-can-eat sushi! Casino's suck!
I have several pre-burn traditions dealing with preparation. In August, I go to the Butte County fair and buy one raffle ticket from the VFW boys. The last Wednesday of August, I get my two bags of groceries from the Gleaners, and then buy my playa food. The last Friday of August is the local military standown for veterans, and I always attend to get clothing for the year. Then I go shopping and buy bags of new socks and underwear to break-in on playa.
I always put on new socks and underwear everyday on playa. The first evening when the Sun goes down behind the mountains, I break out my boat airhorn and give a short signal to start the first night. I always find time first day to visit the Man. This year, I went on the Artery Tour on the Omnibus, and I think I'll make it a tradition.
