Getting a camp started, first timer from New York 2010

Post by MikeVertx » Tue Sep 29, 2009 5:51 am

so I'm *FINALLY* going to be making it out for burning man! :)

excited, penned the dates in early, and all-ready getting on-board with the planning and preparation stages.

I know a camp from Denver, CO which we'll be trying to get a spot next to, and a pair of friends are actually getting married this year in the desert!

Teamed up with an L.A Chapter to combine East Coast with West to create our own camp.

I have camping and some production experience, however have never been through the desert and obviously a burning man virgin, so although I'm doing my best to research and reach out to friends who have been out every year, could still use some guidance.

our 2010 Burning Man facebook group ca be found here:
http://www.facebook.com/home.php#/group ... 4397266259

I was put onto this site by our westcoast head, she also mentioned I should look into contacting the NYC Regional team:
http://regionals.burningman.com/us_ny_nyc.html

There were some key questions I had, which there's plenty of time to find out answers for, and some may all-ready be answered I just need to find the right place for where they can be found.

Here's a tip: You really stand out on the playa in a suit and tie, but get a tan suit - it doesn't show dust. Grey or dark suits will always look dirty out there; a clean suit is classy, a dusty suit looks hobo!
I'm totally serious, I do this, it works.

I second that. A man in a suit looks spectacular out there, even though offplaya I find them SO boring. Seersuckers and khakis are probably more sensible than a banker's uniform, but still attract attention (mine at least).

Kind Regards.

The suit is fine and perfect for the playa, but what's with those scuffed shoes? Come on man, get with the program!

My, so organized so early on.

You will still arrive on the playa and discover that you have forgetten something. Make your peace with that now. :)

It's things you just really didn't need.

Oh no, the suit is sharp! I'm only offering up playa-experience advice on how to get away with rockin' a suit in Black Rock City. Hey, the theme next year IS Metropolis after all.

Mike V, pinstripe suits are so "Goodfellas". Maybe call your place Camp Bada Bing. Fedora and brogans or fine Italian shoewear with a linen suit. Don't forget the white tie to go with the black silk shirt. Or just wear your wifebeater "t-shirt".

Leave the gun, take the canolies.

It's possible to have a clean-looking suit on the playa, but clean shoes are impossible!

The one thing I love about Burning Man, is that everyone wears the same colored shoes. ....okay so I stole that! But its true! A suit and tie, plus a bio-chemical gas mask? Seems appropriate...

I saw a fella last year dressed like a politician out pressing the flesh. He had a partner dressed like a secret service agent tagging along. It was good street theatre.

oh god, i smell DRAMA!

please videotape all proceedings and email to:

RealBurn.Com (tm) the Surreality TV show where we throw schmucks together in a harsh environment, give them massive quantities of drugs and alcohol, add some sleep dep, some partner swappin' and then let the Rest Unfold, like a psychedelic onion, left in the hot sun.

yes....real life, playa drama, east coast flava, west coast locale.

i LOVE it.
