Rape is not cool, unless it tis the acted out kind in porno, and involves incest or a horse or clowns or something like that.
A dude with a dust machine is what we are talking about here, but I am all for changing the topic to muppet porn if you wish.

Funny or not, it was pretty inconsiderate (and not very burning man like IMHO)

Yeah, maybe not very "Burningman like", whatever that is supposed to mean ?....but very Gate like and/or DPW like, and still very funny to some.
They are not infamous for niceness......
There's a limit. How about, "you're going to get laid at Burning Man, I may as well rape you right here!"?
I didn't think you'd be OK with that.
Quite a huge legal, physical and philosophical difference there. Lets not gets hysterical.

It always worries me when people begin making generalizations and assumptions about who someone *volunteers* with... About how they are expected to behave, or mis-behave because of their department.

Well, then you don't know enough about these departments to realize that they are "trained" to be a certain way, albiet some are riding on "coattails" of well established behaivor within those departments.
Show me a vegan shirtcocker working with DPW, and I will retract my assumptions.

Suggest you read my profile. What little I decided to add to it. The number of years I have had this login, should be another clue. Add 8 years of BRC experience to that number.
All your profile tells me is that you talk on phones
Blah blah blah, you got nuthin unless you have a picture of yourself shirtcocking and working the line sweep at the same.

Thank you Artemis. For balance, did anyone else on this thread read vac-guy Paul's account of barely surviving the 2004 Tsunami?* Death was all around him as he tried to save lives. He works with Dive Aid (diveaid.co.uk), an organization of divers that helps people affected by the tsunami. The Burning Man Project purchased special access wristbands in 2005 made by tsunami survivors as a fundraiser. Paul made that happen.

there). So you think this guy should be able to play his little playa prank and cause them to have to leave - or worse still, just give up? It looks like I will need to be riding in with them next year just to be sure this "prank" does not endanger my friend.

Re: GATE!! Blowing dust in cars & engine with shopvac!
That's some good context. You know what? I've done some disaster relief work myself, in past years. Maybe my "joke" next year will be to piss all over the place on the insides of all the JOTS I come to... because a little bit of piss was gonna get dripped during the course of the week anyway! Right?!retropsycho wrote:For balance, did anyone else on this thread read vac-guy Paul's account of barely surviving the 2004 Tsunami?* Death was all around him as he tried to save lives.
Did you read the article?
He not only did "some disaster relief". He almost freaking died.
I mentioned the article again to give some context. I'm not saying it justified what he did. I would have been pissed as shit if this happened to me. But hey, some time it gives you an understanding of why someone does something crazy when you realize that they have suffered some crazy shit.
If you prefer to see everything as black and white, bad and good, be my guest.

First off, BIG THANKS for correcting and emphasizing that this occurred at Gate, not Greeters. The blogger wrote that BM Project staff were going out to the gates to greet the public as they entered. Verb, not noun.
I offered the story of vac guy's heroics in a major tragedy for "balance". I don't ask anyone who finds his prank offensive to forgive him because he did something good (great actually). Just wanted to counter the demonizing of him and the Gate staff. I believe vac guy would not knowingly endanger someone. If we are going to question his prank as a health risk, we also must question the decision for someone with delicate health issue to attend an event held in a area where frequent dust storms are the norm.
I may have missed it in the thread, but the prank has not cause anyone to "have to leave - or worse still, just give up", so okay, you are projecting what you believe to be a real possibility. Indeed, a few year's back one of my most enthusiastic volunteers discovered that she had a undiagnosed respiratory ailment at Black Rock, and cannot return. She lives in the Palm Springs desert, and gave no thought to a potential health risk. Very sad.

What does his good deeds in life have to do with the dusterator? If Jesus Christ Himself robbed a bank, he is still guilty of robbing a bank and should go to jail.Artemis wrote:Did you read the article?

I dont even see why you brought it up. I would have told him to stop, and when he didnt would have ramped up the use of force to make him stop.

I did read the article. Guess what? A lot of us have survived tragedies. For some like me, unlike shopvac guy, our partner did not survive. So... I guess I'm entitled to do something even more rude to people, cause I been through some devastating shit? There's pretty few people who haven't experienced some serious heartwrenching shit by their fourth or fifth decade on the face of this rock.Artemis wrote:Did you read the article?

And as an aside, I kind of doubt shopvac guy would parade his own tragedy as an explanation of his prank.
I'm not the wittiest guy in the world, but a laugh to me might be going up to somebody mid-week and making a big deal about carefully brushing an inconsequential bit of dust off their shoulder. I can't stand un-funny people who accuse others of not having a sense of humor when their stupid "joke" doesn't go over well. Attention, assholes of the planet Earth... it's not that I don't have a sense of humor -- you just ain't fucking funny!!!
As for the specifics of this prank... it should just be understood that it would be fair game to cut the hose and wreck the vac.
Re: GATE!! Blowing dust in cars & engine with shopvac!
You said, "If we are going to question his prank as a health risk, we also must question the decision for someone with delicate health issue to attend an event held in a area where frequent dust storms are the norm."
As you may have read, that participant spends a LOT of HARD EARNED $ in order to attend this event SAFELY. So if you have spent the time and money to be sure you have adequately anticipated having as safe an environment as possible and this ass clown negates those efforts in a few minutes because he thinks it's funny.....
However, I don't have those health issues and I have been attending this event for a long, long time. I would consider having him blow dust into my vehicle as an assault, and attempted destruction of my property. IMHO, it's not cute, not funny, and not defensible.

i arrived in a duststorm ... i suspect i'm not the only one, either ...
when i opened my windows and doors so someone could inspect my car, dust blew in. everywhere. i felt like complaining, but how do you complain about dust to people who are covered in it themselves, working in it ... volunteers ...
still, i must have looked bewildered, because when i told the greeter i was a virgin, and had no desire to get out of my car in a dust storm to ring a bell, she said "you don't know what you're getting yourself into, do you?"
lol, it didn't take long to learn to love the dust!
but the point is .... i had dust blown in my car, but not by a jerk with a shopvac. i'd be pissed to have it happen if it didn't have to, but if your health can't take it, you're in the wrong place.
Did anyone have dust blown into their car windows & engine by person(s) at the greeters station this year??
Thoughts?
Well, while I do think something happened to you, I was there in the lanes opening night. I saw this prank happening, and have been alongside it happening for the last three years or so.
While SOME might have gotten into your windows, your characterization of it is that he loaded the damn thing up, came charging up and basically firehosed your car.
In general, this is done to the OUTSIDE of cars that are already sitting in the dust raised from idling cars. Yes, it creates billows of dust. Yes, if your windows are down it will get in them. But generally it's done from a couple feet away. If you are outside your car helping inspect your car, you might get some too.
In all cases, it's no worse than any other dust storm in terms of amount or intensity. As a worker, I've had it turned on me a number of times. We've had participants jump out of cars and try to get doused because they mistake us for Greeters.
The prank might have gone too far in this case. But I can tell you that I was on shift for 12 hours, and most of the time it went on as I outlined above.
This is not someone charging up inside assiduously clean RVs, unloading it inside.
As always, I suspect the truth lies between both extremes. People just need to chill out on the "Gate loves to fuck shit up" type of thing. Jeez people...

I'm not inclined to question the perceptions either of the person who started this thread or of others who report something different because I think it is more likely that they firmly believe what they claim than that they are liars.
That doesn't mean we are unable to come to some bottom-line determination here. I would say it is this: no one in BRC should be forced to endure the full duration of a prank which they didn't ask for and would like to escape but can't. That's not just about the gate, but theme camps as well.

The point is, IMHO, that he is IMPOSING HIS view of what HE thinks is acceptable at the burn on OTHERS and FORCING them to ENDURE it. read again IMPOSING and HIS. That is WRONG, again IMHO; especially considering that a virgin wouldn't know enough or have the balls to tell him to fuck off.
