Let's see... it would have to be a composite of:
Jesus Christ (He did it for the chicks)
Julius Marx (He did it for the laughs)
John Dillinger (He did it because that's where the money was)
Andy Kaufman (He did it... because)
Jedidiah Strong Smith (He did it alone)
Harrison Ford (He does it so smooth)
Sean Connery (He does it with a cool accent)
In other words... what ever fits the moment...
Who's yours?
Sam

Crush on RtheW for beating me to the punch with Socrates.
The others on my list:
Ken Kesey (self-explanatory)
Madeleine Murray O'Hair for daring to be the voice of reason: the Rosa Parks for the non-religious.
Salman Rushdie and Ray Bradbury for crusading against the thought police.
James Randi for leading the crusade against the purveyors of Science-Fiction-As-Fact, pseudoscience, paranormal, supernormal, and the woo-woo club. (Pigasus, anyone?)
Isotopia Goddamn I wish I could be that fucking beautiful.

Which brings me to my first:
Robert Anton Wilson: for the importance of keeping an open mind and accepting the possiblity of all things, and also that all things should be looked at with intense skepticism.
Edward Abbey: for caring so much
Harriet Tubman: for going back to bring others to freedom after escaping herself
Cyrano DeBergerac: kind of like Leonardo, but with swordfighting
Epicurus: moderation in everything, including moderation...
Robin Hood
Vaclav Havel
And two of my favorite comic book characters: Usagi Yojimbo and Pfirsch Rommel, for insisting on the importance of courtesy, manners, and respect, and coming down like a ton of lead on people who violate those codes.

Jesse James (of Monster Garage, turned doing the cool stuff he liked into a very good living)
Tom Leykis (I probably would have lost the house, cars, paycheck, etc. to an ex by now, and wouldn't be able to afford expensive frivolities like Bman)

Jesse James
Thinking of Jesse James, He found what he likes and makes a living at it. How do you do what you like day in day out in order to make a living at it and not wind up hating it..
Take for example guiding clients in the desert,, While it seems like great fun, the usual client is demanding in a whiny way, almost; "please serve me my coffee in bed". "shoot the animal for me" "Hurry up and pack up camp I have to get back for my flight, oh and make me another cup of coffee" while they sit there and not help...
I am sure that spending 8 hours a day welding gets old too.. as does most things I think if your iq is over 75

Re: Jesse James
Right! I'm an artist, good enough that people ask why I don't do it for a living, and that's always been exactly my answer!Maia wrote: How do you do what you like day in day out in order to make a living at it and not wind up hating it..
Well, that and it usually doesn't pay the bills...
I can't see doing something that's NO fun all day, though. I was a repo man, was fun when younger, but got tired of always having to have weapons just to do my job (sounds similar to what you said a time or two), got the hell out and do something more enjoyable now. I still look forward to going to work each day.
But hat's off to Jesse, he did turn his hobby into WORK, but is making a TON of money at it. If he's careful, when that show's over, he could just retire.

Re: service industry, I wonder how those hard-ass grease monkeys resolve their rock n roll lifestyles with putting out for rich folks. No disputing that it's art, though. Better than super-gluing a spoiler on the trunk of a Neon.

duh
The last real burner still hasn't figured out that both my and BRR's ability to spell, remove us from any possibility of being Allanon... Also consider that Allanon admits to once owning a Dodge Neon. Neither myself or the mysterious Black Rock Ric would drive a little weenie car..

I've always wondered why people cite celebrities as role models. I mean you may very well admire someone for their athletic, artistic, or leadership abilities and contributions to society, but I'm not sure if it's the same thing as wanting to model your life after their's.
When I was growing up my Dad left my Mom to marry someone he had been having an affair with. My Mom had to work all the time and I was pretty much on my own from an early age. I had a friend who's Dad was really there for me. Whenever they went on vacation, I was invited along and treated as one of their own. He also made sure that I was included in all those "teachable moments" that happened between him and his son. He provided me with guidance and was a positivem stable force in my life when I really needed one. He made me feel welcomed in his home all the time (even though I added an extra mouth to feed at virtually every meal). I think most importantly however, he provided me with an image of a man that I could actually model myself after, a real "role-model".

Chai Guy wins this one...
I've told my children what a hero is; it is someone who does what needs to be done. To me, it is the undereducated mom or dad who works and works and works at a hard job to take care of the family, because that is what needs to be done.
Anybody can run into a burning building... not everybody can work for years to make a life for someone else.

It's a matter of perspective; I think an undereducated person who has kids he can't afford and works and works at a crappy job is a bad role model. I wouldn't want to live like that. Others will admire his dedication to his family.
Everyone has their own ideas about who they think sets an example they'd like to follow.
