Refrain
Pharoah's army got drownded
Oh mary don't you weep
Verses
If I could I surely would
stand on the rock where Moses stood.
Mary worr three links of chain
every link was Jesus' name.
One of these nights about 12 o clock
this old worlds going to reel and rock.
God told Moses what to do
To lead the Hebrew children through
Moses stood on the red sea shore
smotin' the water witha two by four
God gave Moses the rainbow sign
No more water, but fire next time.
Mary wore three links of chain
Every link was freedoms name
The very moment I thought I was lost
The dungeon shook and the chains fell off
I may be right and I may be wrong
I know you're gonna miss me when I am gone

& this tread take takes a turn towards the strange and unknown...

-Right, the minimalistic route is the fall back plan... would be a lot cheaper too...
OTOH, how many of you veterans (5+ yrs) are going w/o showers, trailers, elaborate camps, and eating pb&j? (not to mention some A/C)
I can appreciate the benefits of going light... But, I am going to try to go in heavy... and relax once I get there. Especially since I already have a lot of the goodies that can make camping sweet.
-if this works out, you all are welcome to come over... I'll probably bring some seafood. mahi and lobster, are abundant in late August...
since I'm a sailor, I always plan for the low percentage, and am happy when I don't need it. hard to change that now...
The desert, sand and dust are a big unknown though... but I'll read some desert camping sites, and figure that out...
Anyway, back to my last question;
IF I'm able to hookup w/ a local group driving up, and give them my stuff, then fly in... whats the chance of finding them? There's a bulletin board at center camp, Right? Has anyone tried meeting someone once they got there?
-my impression is, it doesn't seem likely, and in that case, I would be better off going light... hmm.....
fwiw, Phish threw a good millennium party in the Everglades, on Indian Tribal lands... think they (indian's ) would do it again... biting bugs can be a problem though... (EAST COAST BURN ANYONE?)

THE PLACERS! LOL!bigbluedoggy wrote:The full accurate placement map of theme camps is not distributed to attendees. This is for a number of reasons, but the main reason is that the placers often have to fudge some borders a bit to make things work out between neighbors... some need a bit more space, some have way too much for their camp size. The map you have found is the most accurate one you are likely to find and as you may note it still doesn't list all of the placed camps by name. And next year, the camps will have changed, the placement will have adjusted and you can't be sure of who will be near whom until about 3 weeks out, and even then only vaguely. Bottom line here is: don't worry about the map. I don't believe that map you have was available before the event. The first place you can see an accurate map showing placed camps is at Playa Info near Center Camp once you have already arrived on the playa. As a virgin, it's going to be far more important to find a group that you like the vibe of than worry about where they are camped.

and, that Playa Info Center is a secure database?

7 square miles of land and appox. 30 miles of various roads and passage ways. What could possible go wrong with trying to find someone when you have no idea where they are? Cell phones don't work and two way radios work only for short distances and the channels are crammed.
Maybe you could all meet up in Reno and travel to BRC together. If you had been there before, you would have a better lay of the land, but for a first time, you may consider plan B!

Shambala, seriously? You've never met somebody, said you would meet them at their camp later, they told you they were at x-o'clock and z... big dome, purple flag, next to whipping post rodeo. Never looked in the WWW and decided to go to something, and depended on the address and street signs to find it?
I think it's pretty reliable to have an address location and find it. Park on the outskirts, go to center camp, find the message board, go to the camp.
Be prepared in case they fuck up or it takes a while to find them.

www.tribe.net has several burningman tribes. And there are enough people who have sold their souls to fasbuk that they will have groups or traffic there as well.DiveDogFLL wrote: any other msg boards I could look into?
Well, I wouldn't start here --this page is worth nothing at all. And I certainly wouldn't find a local cafe and bar that is amenable to have a group of people meeting there once a week and hanging out for an hour or two and chatting, but not really buying all that much and then putting an ad in the local Craigslist that says "I'm trying to get a regular burner group going, let's meet at the Cranky Cafe at 3:00 pm on thursday.DiveDogFLL wrote: -whats the best way to meet folks when you are on the east coast?
Yeah, lots of people use the radios. be sure to have a couple of back up channels so that if traffic is bad on your first choice, you'll be able to find each other on another frequency. Yeah, there was cell phone coverage this year.DiveDogFLL wrote:cell phones or wi-fi worked this year?
anyone use frs radios?

ugh! just looked... its 3200miles one way.... 3,450 the way I'd want to go... thru Albuquerque, damn!
Ok, Thanks for now all you pranksters! I do appreciate all the answers... especially the correct ones
I've got more questions,
But, I'm going to need to think seriously about this trip... it might just be too far, or I'm too old...
too bad this wasn't going on in the 70's when I lived in the bay area
Cheers!

You took the word right out of my mouth. Get a good, 20 degree sleeping bag, a sheet for the inside and a light fleece blanket to lay on top of the sleeping bag. The fleece blanket will reflect back your body heat and it will keep you almost too warm. This is a better plan than dragging the generator and heater.gyre wrote:Blankets?

jeez, I'm pulling your leg... its for a a/c unit I'd also bring... -but you knew that, Right?
and YES, you can cool a tent if needed... BTDT.
I've been reading old threads on epalya, and see a real controversy over RV's and fully equiped campers.
I've done my share of roughing it, at sea, (and land too), for many days, small boat, fully sustained, miles from land, no one to rescue me...
I've learned a few things, and one is you don't need to suffer, if you plan ahead. simple is good, but its also nice to have ice, and cold drinks... and you function better with a decent sleep.
Anyway, my bottom line is I'll probably not do this, unless I come fully equipted... which is a RV/ trailer, or most of the stuff you'd have in a trailer...
but sadly, 3400 mile is a really long way... so I'm probably out... unless I can find some folks willing to share a camp with me.
I'm sure some of you think its silly, but you are probably younger, stronger, and maybe not as wise as I.
thanks again for your help!

Instaed of AC to cool your tent during the day, why don't you get out of the tent and see things. If you get really hot, which is rare, go inside your rental and cool off for a while. You may be making much more of this than you need to.DiveDogFLL wrote:jeez, I'm pulling your leg... its for a a/c unit I'd also bring...

Thanks again for the encouragement!
I'll not give up on this, but I am somewhat overwhelmed. depressed maybe.
I guess, what's most frustrating is, I have been camping for many many years, and have refined my equipment, and skills to either overcome or manage with whatever mother nature deals me.
I know I could do this, if I lived within a days drive. but I don't.
The other thing is meeting others, & trying to guess what they will be like, at 4am, amp'ed up, drinking with both hands... and trusting them with your vital essentials. (like; dood wheres my cooler? lol)
Hopefully, this will still be going on for many years... and I'll have more opportunities.
-Oh, I do have a brother in the bay area, so I may work on that end.. a thought... (he would not be a likely participant, though.)
fyi: I found this on an old thread... not sure how old it is... but sure looks like it fills up...

anyone know when this was taken?

DiveDog..I've been for 10 years and never needed AC...
I prefer RV camping(1969 UltraVan), I like the door and snuggly bed, but don't use the stove or potty, so I don't need power...
There are folks in my camp that are from Fla (and all over the world)...they have a storage unit in Gerlach for camp structures, tents, bikes, & kitchen so they can fly into Reno, shop for food, & rent truck for storage stuff...
I'm sure there are lots of Burners from your area...don't give up now!!!!

I think what you want is to geek out on shade structures. I'm guessing you have the fabrication skills to put something together. Use the search function to find threads about shade structures and start reading. The basic idea is that if you put up something fabricky over your tent, so the sun isn't beating on it, it won't get as hot. It needs about a foot's clearance, as I recall. I'm guessing that you would enjoy thinking through the problem, and it might give you the reassurance that you don't need to bring your gennie or buy a new one to keep in Reno. there is also a tribe in tribe.net called "shade geeks" (see, I unconsciously echoed the name in the opening to this post) you might want to poke around in there as well.
And for the record, I don't do well in heat, and I sleep in a carport, without a tent. It provides me with what I need--I'm really bad with tents--and it doesn't get too hot. I also need my naps, and I have no problem there. Other tricks might include a cot, so that you have air circulation under you. I think there are answers; I think you'll have fun searching for them.
