Well Simon, taking a risk is fine, if you know what those risks are. And I am precisely stating that we do not know those risks. I fully took the risk if I got run over by an art car or something like that I read the website, but there was no guidance given about the playa dust composition....why? And with the fineness of the dust the guidance to use some fabric is just plain wrong.Simon of the Playa wrote:Too late for me. I went this year, had I known the risks *properly* than I would not have come. But I did not find any problems until afterwards by chance.
duh.
Seems reckless to me!
@fish Is that how you really want to communicate with me when I am trying to get at the bottom of things. Not trying to be awkward but get to the truth of the matter.

Not all lake beds are the same. Take a dried lake bed in say England or Salt lake city. Am I supposed to know the composition of all of these lakes before hand researching for hours on end?Boijoy wrote:Me's thinkin' Emergen snuck into Burning Man & didn't have an opportunity to read the back of the ticket. before i go all guernica on you, i'll spell it out to you simply, politely and mercifully.
you are responsible for you.
you have to be radically self reliant...do the research yourself, then make a decision.
dont blame BM llc or other burners or anyone else but YOU.
if you went to thailand, do you think they would advertise tsunami as a potential bad vacation?
there is dangerous stuff EVERYWHERE, how YOU choose to deal with it is up to YOU.
i wonder if Beijing has a disclaimer at their "Air" port?
BMORG did nothing to obfuscate anything from you, and i smell one of the worst OCD's, Hypochondriac, looking for the answer to their own potentially psychosomatic symptoms.
do your complaining elsewhere, you'll find very few sympathetic ears to your supposed plight around here i'm afraid.
Well.. um.. YES ! because you've done the research NOW after the event.
That's my damn point. I had to experience to know and understand the risks after attending - not before. There is no choice. Only after talking to fellow concerned people have we investigated the situation...
If people ARE adequately prepared then they can make an informed choice and not wander round without full face respirators.

So is that useful? Ignorance is bliss? Anything goes cos the responsibility is down to the participant when their safety could easily be improved. I might be saying things you don't like - but they need to be said.
Are most burners occupational hygenists/chemists/scientists and doctors? There is a limit to most peoples knowledge and stating obvious facts about the hazards of the surface should be a given. Why not put it on the site..its not there!!!

In severe cases, patients generally begin to deteriorate around 3 to 5 days after symptom onset. Deterioration is rapid, with many patients progressing to respiratory failure within 24 hours, requiring immediate admission to an intensive care unit. Upon admission, most patients need immediate respiratory support with mechanical ventilation. However, some patients do not respond well to conventional ventilatory support, further complicating the treatment.

Then your fucked - dont go. I on the other hand will go until i die of old age, or the playa dust rots my lungs out.emergenttech wrote:As much as I'd love to take that reassurance Phil, the Silica were are talking about is crystalline silica (on the plya) and the stuff that your link points to...

Life is full of risks and we all concioulsly or unconsicoulsy make risk reward decisions. I wear a mask when needed and have positively concluded that the risk is DEFINITELY worth the reward.

Can anybody here, not understand my fears with regard to the dust? Frankly the more one knows about this dust the better we can protect ourselves.
How many people signed up for a death sentence when they came to BM? Irreversible lung damage and anxiety for years to come. Quite frankly that is what I got. I know how to take risks, I can fly, have driven through remote parts of the world, been shot at etc. But these are risks that one elects to take. I did not elect for lung damage as risk.
As much as I had a good time at BM...I really don't need the agony of the potential health problems.
