Temple of the Lonely Sock

Post by juanicoheal » Mon Mar 01, 2004 11:38 pm

You know all those socks that seem to lose their partner sometime between taking them off you feet, and putting them back on? Everyone has them. Noone know just what to do with them.

No sense in throwing out a perfectly good sock, is there?

I propose to create a new home/final resting place for these lonely soles.

- I'm sure we can't burn this puppy in the end - TOXIC SOCK SYNDROME - However, maybe a sock puppet party?

Oh DVD - you are the master of puppets aren't you.....

We're still working on the concept for this project. Bantering is going a few ways -
1)Bring a sock - make a match. Socks get pinned to the 'walls' of the temple - people can mix-n-match the pairs, take a 'pair' if their feet are sore or cold.
2)Bring a sock for a puppetry makeover.
3)The "single sock" hop.
4)Bring a sock/take a sock (let the hose have a final trip before being dumped for good.) Noone wants to throw out their own single socks, so someone else will take care of that for you.

Great idea, but make it more than just a place to contribute and take socks. Make it the mystical wonderland where socks go when they reach a higher state of conscience. A strange vortex where they instinctively run to.

Maybe add a chute that periodically adds new socks to the pile from above.

Could be a cool chill area made up entirely of (clean!) socks.

Nine chains of socks to the moon

Post by tabby » Tue Mar 23, 2004 3:07 pm

Just thinking out loud here, in the spirit of creative brainstorming...

I keep seeing a long chain of these widowed socks winding all over the place. They could be sewn or tied one to the next. Perhaps they'd lead to the temple (or whatever). But people wouldn't necessarily know what the chain was all about until they followed it. The fact that it'd be a chain of mismatched socks would be amusing and intriguing, and the revelation--at the end of the chain--of their widowhood would provide a good, thought-provoking punchline. Plus, the thing would give a sense of the vastness of the phenomenon--a tangible indication of just how many socks are lost, by just how many people. This makes me think, too, that perhaps the socks could be labeled in some way, you know, with city/state/country of origin, etc.

The "nine chains" bit refers to Buckminster Fuller's book. If memory serves, he was referring to the fact that if the world's human population joined hands, it could form nine chains back and forth to and from the moon. (This, of course, was at the time of the book's writing--would no doubt be more now.)

Whoops. Looks like I'm a year late on this. Oh well. Donning the newbie dunce cap and slinking off to the appropriate area...

Actually - you may be a year too early. looks like the financing for 2004 jus tisn't going to happen.

That just gives me MORE time to plan.

Like the sock ideas, sounds great. I have two trashbags which constitute my personal single sock orphanage, keep hoping their mates will come back.
Sigh. There is something magical about fresh clean socks on one's feet.

I get this imagery in my head of walking barefoot on a labryinth of socks with that fabric softener smell wafting thru the air....

Good luck with your idea

:o :!: Here I have been throwing out my unmatched socks! Maybe I should be saving them so that in 2005 I can make a worthwhile donation to the Temple!

BTW, I like the "sock trail" idea. Maybe safety pin them together, or would the risk of people hurting themselves on the pins be too great...? :?

How about dying them, stringing them together and making prayer flags out of them?

lost socks and literature

Post by leslielandberg » Tue May 25, 2004 12:10 pm

Well, our own beloved Dr. Rev. Howland Owell, aka Hal Robins, has just completed an illustrated tome on the subject of where lost socks go when they get separated from their mates. I suggested that it was to a black hole in the universe, a sock vortex, if you will. He says there is a planet of lost socks out there. Look for his new book at trashy book sellers, such as Barnes and Nobles, this coming Winter. And please buy it...he could use the cash, although I think he only gets about .25 per sale...

I myself have an out of control socktopuss which I wrestle with every time I do the laundry. Occasionally, I find mates revealed within it's tangled guts, but more often simply throw in new appendages, sigh...

think it's safe to say that i'm a sock enthusiast, and i love this idea. i have vowed to only wear exciting socks, so my sock collection is pretty great. but, damn, do i get bummed when i lose a mate, 'cause chances are it was of a cool pair of socks.

anyhow.. i also like the ide of a sock environment. sadly we're not doing this anymore, but for two years a friend and i made panty camp. here's me:

http://images.burningman.com/index.cgi? ... _category=

similarly, we wanted to create a world of panties, not just a place to get a clean pair (which it also was). but it was also very much about women's bodies, exposing the intimate, being comfortable with women's naughy areas and other stuff.

anyways, what i'm saying is that having that many panties in one place really recontextualized them, and i think a world of socks could do the same. i especially like how we project human emotios onto the lost socks. that could really be utilized; it brings up all kinds of stuff for me, about alienation, isolation, searching for a mate or for other lost socks, finding a community of lost socks, etc.

i hope you do it, i love the idea! i'll even ship you some single socks, although i do have a use for them right now. i just broke my ankle, and having a cast on one foot means i only wear one sock. all my lonley singles are fulfilling their sock destiny.

Alas, my heart goes out to sad solo spoon orphans! Socks are a naturaly paired but so often get seperated. I suppose there's room for both projects...
