Thanks for your comments CFM...
I do not think people are getting the point...
I have an issue with the way the playa dust is treated is rather like a nuisance hence the dust masks and bandanas and cloths and whatever to cover mouths and noses that are recommended. That would be fine if there wasn't the threat of more fine grained dust that can enter the lungs.
So if there is a threat from fine particulates then some of the advice and the packing lists etc are no good. As these particulates may pass through the bandanas and masks etc...depending on the size of the particles. But something may be better than nothing.
Determining the composition of the playa was only done after taking some considerable time - its not that easy to find and to understand and make the right deductions about the relative dangers of silica and fine particulates [from official and non official sources]. I guess most people are not occupational hygienists and take a pragmatic approach - i.e. to do what others are doing and to look at guides and advice...even if that may be ineffectual.

Not really. The whole thread can be summed up in one sentence.
"Whiny hypochondriac regrets attending the burn 'knowing' that he is going to die a horrible death from inhaling the dust despite anyone's attempt to convince him otherwise."
Boring!

If the BM site talks of risks of burning vehicles - Dioxins etc etc [things which can easily be avoided], would it not make sense to mention the actual playa itself?!!
The BMORG had space to fill and they choose to inset the above statement.
Now if the horse isn't dead enough, I guess you can keep kicking it, but sooner or later it's going to smell and then your going to have to breath it cuz your just going to keep kicking the dead horse....... bla blaa blaaa.....

I really dont know why you guys take these things as an insult on you or BM. All I am doing is getting at the bloody facts and raising awareness.
I think we are all quite aware, and we choose to attend the event with our dust masks and bandannas. I'm not insulted. I. Don't. Care.
What I can't figure out is the response you're so desperately seeking.
OMG! Dude! You're Right! You're so fucking brilliant! I really am worried about dying of valley fever! I will bring an RV and wear a full on bio-hazard suit!
Really, what response will end this thread?
