Preparation includes plans for clean-up ...
2140 lbs of garbage, agreed to haul off just empty cases, I will not be joining a large camp next year. I had just two kitchen draw-string bags, People in our camp (120) had a hard time poning up $80 for dump run. Some were even offended I asked! Party and run seems to be the montra of a lot of people.
> 1. do circus tents use canvas on the floors?
It depends on the acts. If there are lots of animals, it may be that they need a soft surface of dirt or sand. If it's mostly people (a la Cirque du whatever), then they use a hard surface. I saw a cirque imitator that had an act with geese, and they spread canvas on the floor before the act because of goose droppings. But the normal flooring was a hard surface of some kind that the performers danced and gymballed on.
I would expect carpets and canvas on the playa won't work as a dance surface because it can't be fixed in place, and they'll wrinkle and trip the dancers. The issue isn't the surface, it's cleaning up. And if bullying people substitutes for cleaning up, it's not going to get cleaned up.
I remember Chicken John earnestly assuring people that the only reason anyone goes to Burning Man is for the art. And he started a tempest in the teapot over grants for art, complete with a parody of BMOrg and BMOrg II or some such. At least Chicken John's hissy fits were entertaining. He's very theatrical. It's a shame we can't have more creativity and theater in this fifteen minutes of angst. Instead we get petty bullying and tired cliches. Chicken John's antics were a couple or three years ago, and they're still memorable. Nobody will remember this thread next week.

That is very sweet, Simon, but I do put my foot in it from time to time, and i have been pretty vocal that it is the sound camps' responsibility. I'm learning stuff in this thread, though. I've been toying wiht the idea of having an organized Mooping event in the WWW next year, so having some broader understanding of the issues helps me.Simon of the Playa wrote:fishy, no offense is EVER taken.
i have always found your contributions to be clever, intelligent, well thought out and interesting.
you don't need to apologize or make justifications, i respect your opinion enormously.
I keep thinking that the dj could have a round of "Moop or Schwag?" Give a special mix tape to someone who finds a glowstick on the floor? But how could we be sure that they didn't just tear it off their friend? It's a poser.

Oh boy. We ask everyone to take some garbage home, and we do do recycling pretty okay. Those people are clueless. (Thank you, Captain Obvious Fishy!) That's less than a dollar each! Very good value for the money. I thank you, trenton, for grown-upping up.trenton wrote:2140 lbs of garbage, agreed to haul off just empty cases, I will not be joining a large camp next year. I along With K's of Oregonians hit the beach twice a year for clean up.. Hundreds of tons are picked each year..Bob wrote:Not a huge secret that *any* stage or rave camp contributes much more litter than other camps...
Conversely, there's litter everywhere on the event site, and the "green" designation is relative...
Maybe the real problem is the background levels of trash are too low... c'mon, everybody, do your part...

hey phil, they'll remember me long after chicken wins the mayoral race.
and i dont have hissy fits, by the way, they are justified anger at unwarranted attacks.
this only hissing i hear is from your keyboard.
go ahead thrash away, have fun, if thats what turns your crank.
you can name call, and denigrate, as you so admonished me for supposedly doing, and you can use fuzzy wuzzy logic, but the truth will always stand tall.
i'm 6'5.
deal with it.
i'm not afraid of anyone, and will hold my ground when i know i'm right, or at least trying to go in that direction.
and please don't misconstrue my east-coastishness for bullying...thats how we converse.
talk shit about us, and we bring the manure truck, and ten guys with shovels to give it right back.
it is what it is....a disagreement....your responses are no more or no less valid than mine, and i for one opt out and will let the eplaya pass judgment and hopefully offer up positive constructive suggestions on how to solve this problem (besides the tired old cliche of "Lets get rid of the Rave Camps")

you asked for it, you got it...
i called my buddies in Switzerland the other day about the moop issue and he said not to worry.
we have a solution for next years problem, and they'll be testing it by christmas, with a full go in the spring.
by labor day, this baby should be ready to rock, and sweep the place clean...
there will only be green on next years map, pilgrims.

Planning a vacation?

It’s a whale! It’s a fish! It’s…the North Pacific Trash Gyre!
The article does not appear to say, but I am guessing Midway Island.

When I was a kid I used to pray every night for a new bicycle.
Then I realized that the Lord doesn't work that way so I stole one and asked Him to forgive me

Another more detailed moop map - click it to enlarge. It's much bigger and takes awhile to download.

^^nice map, thanx!!!
Can someone please clarify the difference between Red Yellow and Green, in
practical terms to a noob? (I did read the index)
Any pictures of a yellow and red site?
Who makes the call on the moop color code? Subjective?
or, there's some scale or points system? but only known to those in the secret society ?
is anything more than a leaf rake needed to restore from red to green? shovels? can this stuff be borrowed from DPW?
or is the whole point, that you must plan ahead, before you leave, so you don't get in the red in the first place?
