Hopefully will meet you all in '10!

Post by gypsyloo » Fri Oct 23, 2009 8:10 pm

Ok heregoes.

I've known about Burning Man, since 2008- and have wanted to go ever since. I recently just turned 18, and with a little bit more income, the year 2010 is looking like i might finally pop my burning man cherry!

My name is Bahar Baharloo and I'm originally from Boston, MA. I live in San Antonio, TX due to a strange series of events, but I'll be back in MA soon. I'm an actor/singer/musician, and I've recently become obsessed with poi, fire dancing, and aerial silk. It looks like there was all of this goodness and more at BM 09... bummed I missed out. Anyway, I'm reading everything I can about the festival, and any tips would be much obliged. I've just started planning, so if anyone thinks that i'd fit in helping with something, just let me know! can't wait to dance with all of you!

Welcome!

Not too burst your bubble, but should you arrive Monday morning, and leave Sunday night, you'd have to dance with about 7143 people per day...which is 298 people per hour....and 5 people a minute....non stop.

happy burn!

2008 was just 10 months ago. Don't you think you are being a little impulsive on going in 2010?

In any event, you have plenty of time ahead of you to learn how to dance with a huge crowd. I would suggest wearing comfortable shoes.

WELCOME and look forward to seeing you in 2010!

Welcome gypsyloo.

You might want to check with the local burner groups and get connected with a project they are doing. It's a great way to help out and to learn from those who have been before.

And if you're budgeting out your experience, here's a couple tips that I find helpful. Save your money now for your ticket purchase in January or get someone to gift it to you for the Christmas season. Then once January rolls around start saving for and/or booking your transportation. Once that's looked after then you can start getting your camp gear together and last but not least go to thrift shops for costumes.

If you space out your expenses over the year, it's easier to make your dream a reality. If you leave it all til next summer, financial reality might harsh on your dream.

Save a dance for me!

Many people suffer from the alkaline playa dust which can dry your feet out enough to crack them in one day. Most people wear socks and shoes however some can get away with sandals. It will depend on your skin's reaction, I suppose. With the amount of walking that one does, your feet need TLC.

 I'll hold you to that young man! oops that might be an assumption on gender! Whatever, we'll dance. You can find me at the Black Rock Beacon newspaper camp. Just ask, someone will know where it is.

I'm going to try going barefoot as well, and see how my feet do on the Playa. I often hike and take picture barefoot, so I'm use to it here in Florida. I also plan to take a pair of Vibram FiveFingers shoes [http://www.vibramfivefingers.com/] they are like a glove for the feet, and work really well when you want to be barefoot but can't.

I prefer a traveller loo.

And I went barefoot non-stop, just fine. Put on shoes at night because it was cold.

the five fingers is one interesting shoe, or two interesting shoes, or an interesting pair of shoes. hmmm. I wear shoes and socks, and have seen sharps on the ground that are difficult to spot. I had some burried rebar poking through my campsite once. as Phil notes often, your mileage may vary.

Those are some funky non-shoes! Some are made of kangaroo leather? weird. If only the prices were a little lower. Regardless, I'll bring some shoes just in case.

hahaha, general society considers me a girl, and last time i checked i still had the parts... but no worries, the name throws people off. It's farsi for "spring". I'm Iranian!

gypsyloo;

Looking forward to meeting you. Sorry about the confusion on your name, I couldn't make out which language it was. But of course farsi makes sense.

Possibly you can catch us all up on the goings-on in Iran right now if you still have family or contacts there. We have a political topic heading here on eplaya and many of us discuss topics of general interest with a political bent there. As a political junkie I've been following the events since before the June election. The deaths of the young protesters was heart-wrenching to watch.

Well Deb, if that first dance is going to go to waste, why don't I step up and offer my services. :D I will be dancing with a shoe on each one of my left feet!

No, they are a soft rubber, but they allow you to feel the ground as you walk (or run). I like them a lot. Yea the price is a little high, I found then a little cheaper in a local shoe store.

Yea, everything there has been really devastating. It's really hard to get in contact with relatives there, Iran is really securing it's perimeter. Iran has been in these Islamic extremists' grips for way too long- and I really hope the people win this fight. One of my greatest dreams is to see a free Iran.

I assume you mean flying to the BRC Spaceport, not Reno.

I hear it's spectacular. It's also complicated, because you have to make sure your luggage (including 15 gallons of water) get there by other means.
