NY future burner saying hi
Hey there everyone.
Where to start.......
I got a phone call from my father a few months ago. Keep in mind he is a seemingly straitlaced 56 year old guy who has never shown much interest in the creative endeavors of others. Especially if it's "weird". I pick up the phone and he says "Want to go to Burning Man next year?". Really took me by surprise. I say "sure" thinking he doesn't really know what it's all about, but then again I don't either, so who's the fool there.
We talked about it for a while that night and by the end I was so so excited I literally did not sleep that night. How would we get there? What can I contribute? Can I really run around nude?
Since that night I (and he) are near obsessed with the idea of being first time burners in 2010. Who knows, things may get in the way (just bought a house and have a baby on the way), but the plan is on. We just have to work out the logistics and a million other details before next August.
I look forward to getting to know you all. I think for now I will do a bunch of reading before I start asking questions.

And while I don't really expect you to answer me, I do wonder what a "straight-laced" type is looking for at the event. I do think that the burn is a normal variant of something that humans seem to have needed as far back as we can see, so no one should be "auto-excluded." Still, it also seems like a big piece of san francisco hedonism, and seems incongruous on that level.

To answer the first post, yes that is indeed me in the photo. The pregnancy is going well. Should have clarified that it is my wife who is pregnant, I'm just along for the ride and the residual chocolate.
When I described my Father as straitlaced, I think that was the impression I always had of him. That's why this came out of left field. He had been mulling it over for years and decided that Burning Man was something he needed to do. And not just as a spectator. Sitting in an RV and watching the show go by is not his idea of a good time. Creating things and adding to the experience is.
Myself, I've always been on the creative side of life. Seeing the wide range of art at Burning Man is one of the big reasons I want to go. Hopefully I can contribute some art in my own way as well. Again, I don't want to be a spectator. I want to add something in whatever way I can.

It's pointless to walk when it's past time to run.

I knew it was your wife who was pregnant. (Femine intuition?)
As I said, I dont' actually think that the "straightlaced" thing is an issue, it's just interesting to me. Anyway, I think that it's possible that there's a disproportionate number of "doers" in the burner population.
