Opulent Temple needs to clean up their act.

Post by changoloco » Tue Oct 27, 2009 1:58 pm

This comparison of MOOP maps shows that the area of and around Opulent is consistently bad for MOOP. I wish they would stop all their whining and "Music Is Art" t-shirts and start thinking about cleaning up after themselves. Don't get me wrong I enjoy Opulent from time to time but, I have become increasingly frustrated with all of their complaints about not getting funding for their installment. They should take note that, none of the art installations get a red mark on the MOOP map but, Opulent seems to be making it a trend.

Maybe you should head up the "Keep opulent MOOP free" campaign...

Here is the MOOP map for reference purposes.

I think Opulent Temple was really clean. It was just all those random people who kept showing up and dancing there who left a bunch of junk. Instead of the Opulent Temple, maybe we should just ban the people from Burning Man.

Well are you a charming, axe-grinding know it all.

We've been over this recently. Huge numbers of people involved. Massive preparing and daily mooping--still not enough.
Look at the way the red and green are in the parts of the camp closest to the Esplanade and 2 o'clock--to me that indicates that they are doing just fine keeping the private area on the camp well mooped. If you look at the moop map in general, you see that red areas are typically high traffic areas in the entire city. Since you
...enjoy Opulent from time to time...
you are basically look like just another one of those upstanding citizens who slums down in Opulent Temple, and then blames them for being there.

So, we'll expect you there for an hour every morning?

Opulent is a large draw for crowds. I saw plenty of their members busting ass to keep it clean. For the amount of traffic that comes through I am surprised its as clean as it is.

Unless you have never ever ever danced or enjoyed the tunes or enjoyed those who were enjoying the tunes at the big Dance camps, we should all be spending some time helping them clean up.

Here's a suggestion; next year, for all the people that don't know what to volunteer their 2 hours at, go to the big dance camp nearest you and spend 2 hours cleaning up there.

I generally stay on the Playa until Thurs-Fri to help with clean-up. Last year I spent 4 days collecting lumber for BWB. For the last 3 years I have spent an average of 2 weeks on the Playa between set-up and break-down. So I guess the real question is,"What are YOU doing about it?"

I firmly believe that if you want to have a huge sound camp then, it is your responsibility to clean it up.

i agree, all it takes is an announcement between every single DJ to clean shit up. i think most burners wouldnt mind taking some trash back to camp with them in exchange for their booming system and fun times. i'll spend some time there next year and help clean cause it's embarrassing to see all that red on the map.

p.s - how come El Circo / Do Lab never get blame? they were far worse.

when/where was that?

first and second years of its use, i sent some emails to dpw about its problems, and how some camps were going to be negatively effected by it. not one response.

when those problems started getting obvious to others, and some camps recieved unfair treatment from the org over it, a few brought it open in the forums after they had the same communications falures with dpw. then... dpw'rs mostly replied in thier standard fuck you response.

I imagine being dpw and having your viewpoints and experiences dismissed must be like having someone show up on the boards very rarely and just be unrelievedly pissy and completely unaware of lengthy discussions.

You're so far into Bitter Ex-Burner mode it's depressing. Do yourself a kindness and find another e-home. If there is any friendship between us, believe me. You wont get the response or validation you are seeking. It's just the same old repetitive shit and it won't change for you, but will continue to look hollower and hollower to you every time you log in.

of all the various bman groups, dpw has by far been the most notorious for that attitude. i wont go into the various examples and the org's own actions internally taken to correct them.

im not bitter, and i'm going to return fishy. so if my observations and experience bothers you then yes, its best you ignore me even if that costs us the friendship. because for whatever personal assumptions that will be made, thats not going to change, and i have far too much respect and admiration for those other veterans who fought long and hard for what they believed in, and invested so much time and effort into creating.

the problems exist and will continue. does this mean that i'm concentrating on the negative in exclusion to positive? absolutely not, but thats how i continue to contribute to bman online communities as long as they progress into this territory of such low attibutes. the positive aspects are now kept private, because some of us have learned the very sad realization that to achieve what we want and enjoy it, we now have to exclude a greater number of people...

... and that is truely tragic to me, but i no longer consider myself a member of your great burningman republic since its become the root problem. we are what we continue to do, but we're not going to be inclusive, and we're not going to care how you feel about it.

Elitism, burnier than thou...it all starts with a mindset just like the one highlighted above. Exclusionism solves nothing, but unfortunately it takes some people much longer than others to finally figure it out. Meanwhile the event they claim to love and are trying to protect slowly strangles itself to death.....

that is such ignorance.

just about every counter/sub culture birth is exclusive, and most times its simply because things are done by word-of-mouth or limited budget for advertisement of events. from thier respective club and party scenes, to warehouse collectives, to private parties and performances... even the bman was that way.

cacaphony people told some others about the playa, how there was this place completely empty and void, that there was complete freedom to do whatever because it wasnt well known and nobody goes out there, how magnificent and spiritual it was... after the first couple of years of holding the event, others and myself heard about it through cacaphony and eventually decided it was a mutually great thing to invite certain other groups into. simultaneously, a few other collectives including granola groups above north bay, and dance massives from the peninsula had similar ideas when they were getting too big in the bay area. hell, even the original bman on the beach had to go because cops and park officials dont like massives there.

...so take yourself to another topic k.

1. characterized by or exhibiting opulence: an opulent suite.
2. wealthy, rich, or affluent.
3. richly supplied; abundant or plentiful: opulent sunshine.

OK back to topic. I think opulent should stop the music right before the prime dj of the night, every night, and have people moop for 15 minutes. opulent could give a prize out for the most moop collected at that moment like a signed cd, or a copy of the next dj's set signed by the dj etc. It would be taken well and everyone would PARTICIPATE! Just a thought. might work might not but one thing is for sure, there would be less moop in the morning for them to pick up by themselves!

I've toyed with this myself. At some point some asshole might bring some of "his" own trash and win the cd plus have less garbage to take home.

How do you authenticate moop?

might want to consider why you think they should do anything.

not disagreeing with your suggestion, i'm disagreeing with holding them responsible for something that isnt their responsibility - especially when you dont acknowledge the considerable effort they already put into cleanups. they are not the problem, its everyone else.

doesnt do well for motivating various camps to follow the rules - because when they do, they are still criticized over it. the fact that they still do the incredible amount of cleanup is impressive, most groups would simply think 'screw that, not if i'm going to get blamed for it anyways.'

radical self-reliance should have been radical self-responsiblity.

I imagine the Opulent Temple organizers probably get more frustrated than anyone by people who come and enjoy their space, then leave their trash behind after wards.

I have friends who have camped with Opulent Temple and I know they work very hard to clean up the MOOP that's left behind. They organize shifts for members to pick up trash during the night and then again during the day to find any trash they missed.

They are very aware of the MOOP issue and always trying to find ways to reduce it.

Have a crack squad of volunteers quickly deploy electrified barb-wire fences that completely surround the entire OT dance area just before the announcement for the contest is made (these same volunteers also act as border security, preventing anyone from leaving, and are equipped with flamethrowers to fit-in with the overall feel of BM).

Anyone tries to enter or leave after the contest starts, and the guards cut loose.

Come to think of it, this might have a few additional side effects...

Seriously though, some ideas are here;

1) DJ calls for on-the-spot clean-up (maybe once every hour)
2) Volunteer Group that comes and helps OT for clean-up (this is an opportunity for someone that wants to get closer to OT to organize this group)
3) Starting a grass-roots word-of-mouth campaign to recommend to anyone that does not know what to do with their 2 hours of volunteer time to go to one of the corner music camps and clean up.

putting down tarps and carpeting probably isn't financially practical, but you could add that too.
