See, apokoliptika is in my consciousness....I rented a storage locker today and was wondering about security when along comes these street rumbling fucking WWII tanks! Ya! The guy has a hobby of restoring these puppies and parading them on the 4th. Talk about security.

Salman is supposed to have the L in it.

Salmon is one of those words where an etymological spelling has confused folks. When it was borrowed into Middle English via Norman it was spelled and pronounced without the l: samoun.

Later, people who knew some Latin realized that there should be an l in it (i.e., s;a,o, salmonis), and after that it's a hope, skip, and a jump to pronouncing the l. Mostly, I've heard it a-monds (short "a"), and, usually in the northern Sac valley, where they grow a lot of them.............

I've never - to my recollect - heard anything other than "all-muhnds."

However, I googled that, as well, and many claim the L in almonds is indeed silent. There's a word for when two letters sort of sound like another one, or cancel each other out...but my linguistics background is failing me.

Here in the land of Almond Growers, it's spoken both ways.

Almonds when still on the trees.

ah-mends when on the ground. It's a way to describe what stage in.

now I could have this backwards, but the two-ways is correct....

But I'm not a farmer and I might have been in a altered stage in my life 22 years ago. So take this info for what it's worth, cuz it cost you nothing.

Thank you! I found a link in my research, to a podcast that discussed why farmer do that, but didn't say why. Now I know!
