Why is it that...

Post by Elderberry » Fri Oct 30, 2009 2:50 pm

...based on the "views" and the "comments" it appears that so many people will read a post from a newbie in the Introductions section and be so rude as to not take a moment to welcome them to the board?

Once they get a welcoming handshake from you, they should be able to see it coming.

Maybe we can do a round robin welcome for all the newcomers. We can try to write things to make them look personalized so they can feel all warm and fuzzy about being here. We can all take a turn with our greetings and work our way around either by age, height or alphabetically.

JK, maybe you can ask Barbie if she can bake cookies to ship off to them. Who doesn't love cookies? :D

And who doesn't love Barbie...maybe we should make her the official greeter here on eplaya. That should keep the numbers down.

But seriously, if someone takes the time to read an introductory post, what is so hard about saying "Hello"?

If you're a good shot, we could sure use you here in Los Angeles. I'd even pay for your BBs.

We definately have our share; but I was just in Cleveland and I think they have a lot more corrupt politicians than even LA.

I'm afraid you've got your facts wrong, jkisha. Cleveland has corrupt bureaucrats especially in the building inspection department but Detroit has strangely corrupt mayors who forget that texting their admin assistant naughty messages may still come to haunt them, even in prison! :D

jk, just come out and say you'd appreciate a hand with the greeter task. You do such a good job that sometimes I just leave it to ya'. Besides sometimes I can't think of the "perfect" response.

There is no one "perfect" thing to say...I say exactly the same thing to every new person "Hey there, welcome to eplaya!" Even if they ask a question. Sometimes I add a comment, but to me, when someone posts in the Introduction thread, I think an acknowlegment (any acknowlegment) is appropriate. Then again, I usually say hello to everyone I pass on the street too, but that's just me.

Interesting that I never did that on the playa until just this last burn and I took an entire morning and just road around on my bike shouting hellos and waving to everyone I saw that was beyond ear-shot. I had a great time that morning.

And the bum is living more lavishly now then when he was the "Hip-Hop Mayor" They are still investigating the drive by shooting of a stripper who "alledgedly" danced at a party at the mayor's mansion who was "alledgedly" assaulted by the mayor's wife when she walked in on them.

A wee bit o'thread drift there, sorry

JK, you do welcome the newbies consistenlt on a reg. basis and that is nice. I do most of my surfing here while at work and try to respond to them, as well as others when downtime allows but I cant tell you how many time I get ready to type a response only to get sent on a call. Unless I'm in the "post a reply" mode, I may space off what I was doing, especially if the call was so good that it totally warps my memory of what I was up to prior. Like the guy in the tree trimiming limbs and cut off his leg with the chain saw, falling onto the street below, causing a 3 car accident where one of the cars ran into a house, causing it to catch fire, sending the pregnant lady out onto the lawn and giving birth there. To triplets.

Wow, that Fentanyl IS good shit

But, short of having an official eplaya ambassador role (hmmm, maybe the mods.... ) I don't have a pat answer. I dont remember when I first registered, is there or can there be an automated welcome message that gets sent to the new users email addy they reg'd with?

Being a mod doesn't mean I want to be a greeter. It's a volunteer position, go for it. I greet as the spirit moves me, which is very little some days.

In going back and re-reading my original post, I think maybe "rude" was not the best choice of words. My intent was more, I guess, to remind people that this is a 'community' and that it is nice to be welcomed into that community by its members. Using the word "rude", in retrospect, was more of an admonition, which based on those who replied to this thread, was taken more to heart by the very people that I would say are the most conscientious about welcoming new-comers, than those that might have benefited by a bit of admonition.

So, I will retract what I originally said and just say that it is nice to have people on eplaya that take the time to welcome the newbies and simply encourage everyone else to take a minute, when possible, and acknowledge newbs that post in the Introductions section.

No, not like that at all. She doesn't try to scare people off, she just tries to make sure that they're not spammers.

:D Sounds like you're getting burned out, Anti M and I can understand why with some of the recent kerfuffles and chasing spammers away. Are more volunteers needed for the mod shifts?

Not to say you're not all doing a great job but Anti M sounds exhausted.

Well, there are tons of lurkers (the "hidden" that Goathead has worried about) who read lots of things and don't post. I've assumed that's a lot of what's going on in the newbies threads too.

Thank you for encouraging others to welcome them, JK. I liked it much better when you phrased it that way.

You're welcome. Me too. Sometimes I can be as guilty of "drive by posting" as anyone else.

JK

Drive By Posting = posting something without thinking or reading the post you are responding to. (Did I coin that pharse?)
