Well, it depends on what you're into...I'm in BM 2009 Virgins, Playalicious Playawear, Burning Woman and Burning Man Tips.ygmir wrote:holy crap batman!!
I must lead a sheltered life.
I just went to check out the "Burning Man" stuff on Tribe......
there is so much, where does a person even begin?
I've not really spent any time there, popped in a couple of times. I belong to a couple of small "tribes" but,
Jeeze.........
kind of scared me.......
are there certain threads regarding BM to check out?
*shuddering with the thought of even spending more time on the computer*
None of them are terribly helpful, unless you're an idiot who can't type "burning man tips hints etc." into Google.
I generally go there when I want specific opinions on certain stuff - but I also rely mainly on my blog commenters for that, too.
Otherwise, my tribes are all regional stuff (Transformus, SC Burners Unite!, Alchemy, etc.).
I really love the "What were you doing..." error thing, that you can never send, because it still isn't working...

Perhaps I might help, DVD, as I was wondering about that, myself, until finally I found clarity, just now. As I attempted to log in, and got a face full of this
.....................................
I started to head over to ePlaya to post about this latest triumph of the "new" team, and then it hit me. Wasn't today somewhere around the anniversary of my last post to this thread? And so it was, and all became clear.
Tribe breaking down is a holiday tradition. Mark Pincus New Systems Associates is helping everybody get in the mood for the Thanksgiving season by giving everybody something to be thankful for, namely that they aren't investors in Tribe or New Systems Associates or the Super Secret Extra Deluxe Programmer's Guild, or whoever it is that we're supposed to believe is running the show. Let us count our blessings, and what possessions we still have and know that as annoyed as we might be, things could be a lot worse. How sweet of them.
Garsh. I just feel like going up and hugging a perfect stranger, right now. How about you?

Can someone explain this to me?

I like it, but I admit it has "issues." And said issues are driving people away, which decreases the amount, and to some extent, the value, of the content. So, yes, you should join. We need fresh blood.

Yeah, yeah. But I see no reason not to hitch my star to a dinosaur. Especially a dinosaur that doesn't whore out my eyeballs to any advertiser out there.

In their defense (and I don't know why I'm even defending them, as they suspended my account), the service is FREE and it cost big bucks to buy/run servers, routers, bandwidth, etc. for more than 350,000,000 people all putting up pictures and daily updates etc. Plus, because of the membership outcry several months ago, users have almost total control of their privacy settings.theCryptofishist wrote:Yeah, yeah. Hopefully I'll get my account problems straightened out with FB and we can be friends!

I'm not sure who your message was addressed to ...
If what you wrote was addressed to me, thanks for the heads-up, DVD. I had already knew about this, but not getting blindsided is a good thing. Better to hear twice about a situation like this than not at all.
If what you wrote was written for jkisha's benefit - I would agree with what you're saying. Looking at the archives, I got the same impression you did, and many other users of Tribe have as well, among those with whom I've spoken.

That's how I've come to see political discussions online, in general, which is why I avoid them. Let's say one is fantastically, implausibly lucky, manages to have a civilised discussion, and people write brilliant things in it. Who's ever going to hear about it?Deb Prothero wrote:Have to agree on the Politics tribe. It's a nightmare most days and the volume is too much to keep up to. Most of it is hogwash. Don't dare to have a civilized discussion there, you'll get pounced on. Utter silliness.
But let us say that, as is far likelier, one runs into a political extremist of one variety or another, and he gets infuriated because one hasn't stroked his nutty assumptions. A lot of those assumptions are going to be out there, just absolutely insane - I still remember one guy who got angry because I wouldn't agree that the making of snuff films should be legalised. Everybody's going to hear about that guy's rage, in a strangely filtered way, along with elaborate libels about things one supposedly said or did, that won't go away even when one can show that one didn't say or do anything of the sort alleged. These people will often latch onto one, and follow one around for years.
Best just to stick with the hobbies and jokes, and not expect the Internet to be a worthwhile place to discuss anything deeper that that, I think.

Political Junkies, Radical Politics and Intelligent Political Discussion are three tribes where I have found community that works reasonably well for discussing politics. If you haven't seen those ones, Here and There, you might want to check them out. Once in awhile an idiot will show up but for the most part we are able to have debates without too much rancor interfering.

Sorry, not seeing how you got from A to B on that one. To say "that place is a battlefield, and if you're go there, you're going to encounter a lot of grief without accomplishing anything along the way" isn't a boast, it's a warning, one which I was glad to take to heart. This much is just common sense, I should think - if one is going to take on a hardship, shouldn't there be a good reason for doing so, something that would make the experience rewarding despite the trouble, or maybe even, in some way, because of it, to an extent?
But then, this is really about you looking for an excuse to attack DVD, while pretending that your personal attack is something other than a personal attack, isn't it?

Here and there, now that is truly amazing. The truth sucks sometimes.
Thanks for pointing out the facts.

Hey DVD, how are you man? DVD is an old-timer-eplayan.
What do you think about windows 7? Is it worth it to install on 8 year old pcs?
When are we getting together to shoot the shit?
Are you real? Or one of those people in some people's heads?

It's cliquish. Maybe it's because it's such a fall from my elite status here (that was all typed in very sarcastic tones), but I always felt like an intruder there.AntiM wrote:I missed the original wars, but 3playa is an alternative to eplaya when we all can't get along.
