The term 'treatment' came from the article that I had linked.
I have never had a flu shot. I luckily do not get sick that often.
As a kid we were actually not "allowed" to be sick.
We never got aspirin for headaches.
I'm trying to remember a time when any of us six kids were ever home sick from school unless there was surgery involved.
My lack of direct experience is more apparent than I thought.
Thanks for kindly educating me on one of the many subjects I don't know everything about.
Except you, Ass-o-topia, you badgering sock.

But I tell ya what, in 10 yrs after the first shots go in....we'll see what they have to say/show.

After ten years?!?!?!?! They have been vacinating for flu since 1940 or so...all the results have been in since before you and I were even born. H1N1 is no different than the seasonal flu shot...just a different virus. They add different strains of the virus each year.
So there is no "logical" reason to not get the H1N1 shot. People that think the way you do are also responsible for an increase in Polio today too.

Ummm and ooh. I was once told and learned that our flu vaccines come from swabbing the nostrils out of two pigs (out of four) in Asia that MIGHT harboe a deadly in-FLU-enza virus that could wipe out the world. Every year. It takes about 3 days for a virus to be recognized by our bodies and create the symptomes we experience to attack it. ( feeling hot, its your hipoocampus turning up the heat to kill the little buggers and decreases the amount of iron they love to thrive on), snot is created to trap those buggers before they get way down in your lungs and builds up in your nose, uh umm...nasopharynx and makes you want to expel them. Fluid is good to loosen those secretions. Bed rest is good and a nutrtional diet works wonders because your body amps up the game to fight the pathogen (buggers). Take rest, eat well. Give your body some time to do its job....might be faster than a trip to a clinic. HOWEVER, if you are in one minota of evidence you are immmunocompromised, take the vaccine...so that your body might have a chance on recognizing it sooner. But for a non-immunocompromised body, your immune is not under attack and works quite well. Please learn and understand what we know now about the human body.
Oh and the polio thing? Its mandatory in America. In Africa about three years ago, the government convinced people the polio vaccine was AIDS. And hence the up surge of polio in AFRICA...and then now the downsurge. Think about that quiet little tidbit.

You lost me there at the end.
But there is a docko on the misuse of chimps to make the polio vaccine, resulting in aids migrating to humans.
If there premise is accurate, then they are right.
Even then it was known as a stupid, stupid thing to do.
It happened in africa in the right area for the risk.

Overview of the theory
One theory of the origin of AIDS is that it developed from contaminated vaccines used in the world's first mass immunisation for polio. There are a number of reasons why this theory is plausible enough to be worthy of further investigation.
* The location coincides dramatically. The earliest known cases of AIDS occurred in central Africa, in the same regions where Koprowski's polio vaccine was given to over a million people in 1957-1960.
* The timing coincides. There is no documented case of HIV infection or AIDS before 1959. Centuries of the slave trade and European exploitation of Africa exposed Africans and others to all other diseases then known; it is implausible that HIV could have been present and spreading in Africa without being recognised.
* Polio vaccines are grown (cultured) on monkey kidneys which could have been contaminated by SIVs. Polio vaccines could not be screened for SIV contamination before 1985.
* Another monkey virus, SV-40, is known to have been passed to humans through polio vaccines. A specific pool of Koprowski's vaccine was later shown to have been contaminated by an unknown virus.
* In order for a virus to infect a different species, it is helpful to reduce the resistance of the new host's immune system. Koprowski's polio vaccine was given to many children less than one month old, before their immune systems were fully developed. Indeed, in one trial, infants were given 15 times the standard dose in order to ensure effective immunisation.

It was a very, very interesting bit of speculation and one that gained a lot of credible foothold within the the epidemiological community. In fact a very well researched book came out of it back in the mid-90's. On further investigation it was determined that the time frame was completely out of sync with what was initially suggested the theory wasn't shot out of the sky immediately though. As mentioned a lot of folks took the idea quite seriously as it was viewed in many quarters as being quite plausible. Certainly more plausible than the idea that HIV is a government created agent to reduce the population of African-Americans in this country as has been suggested. Worse are the AIDS denialists like UC Berkeley's Peter Duesberg. But there is a docko on the misuse of chimps to make the polio vaccine, resulting in aids migrating to humans.

I'll be getting my pig flu vaccine as soon as they make it available.
And I always get flu shots.
105° fever once made me decide I might be better off.
Iso, what do you think of the theory that smallpox vaccine may offer some slight resistance to aids?
I still remember getting that one.
I find it more interesting that there's strong documentation that at least alludes to the idea that a very small segment of people with HIV who remain asymptomatic after decades all seem to have a link to a small documented pool of ancestors in England that showed (historically) a very strong resistance to both the bubonic plague as well as the influenza outbreak of 1918.Iso, what do you think of the theory that smallpox vaccine may offer some slight resistance to aids?

my nephew has the piggy. his brother had it a few weeks ago, this one came home from school with it to-day. he thought it was allergies until it hit him like a ton o' bricks.
so his dad took him to the doctor to get some tamilflu. they have tickets to fly back east tomorrow ... hopefully a few of those $8.60 pills (the cost *after* insurance) will make him OK to go (he was already feeling better a few hours after taking the first). but dad, worrying about himself, asked if he could be vaccinated.
the answer was no. all this talk about vaccine ... guess what? you can't get it anyhow unless you're in a few select groups ... and parents of kids who have it are not among them.
so why are we arguing?

I can't believe they are putting him on a plane...very irresponsible, especially if they think it is H1N1.

Mitochondrial DNA analysis actually. They were doing gene research into that, last I heard.
Several researchers were doing some genomic analysis at our SSRL lab a while back. They found a burial site in Alaska where a village of native Inuit had been buried. All of them had succumbed to the the influenza virus. The idea being that the permafrost that they were buried in might just be cold enough to preserve remnant tissue samples that could be collected and analyzed of the prior strain. Not really sure of their findings but it seemed like a damn original idea to go to collect samples for analysis.

he won't get on the plane if he's still sick ... he was already much better, in fact. they caught it early and got him drugs right away.
besides, what do you care ??? a week ago you were complaining about overpopulation ... now you want vaccine for everyone. seems to me you're just trying to change the way nature controls population ... ?
Reports are that children can be carriers two weeks after they get well, as their systems don't work like adults.
Part of the current plan is to vaccinate children to protect adults.
That isn't working here.
They just changed the rules again for people up to 24 years old and pregnant women.
But few people are getting them here.
Part of that is due to transportation issues here.
The rest is stupidity.

I'm a little frustrated with the lack of H1N1 shots, too. But I expect to be vaccinated before xmas. Considering that six months ago it wasn't even under manufacture... Does anyone know how much, if any, vaccine they have in Europe and Japan? (Yeah, yeah, I have a sister who works for national health... Or it could be on the WHO website...)
I have heard, a few years back, that they got 1919 Pandemic samples from service men buried in Alaska.

And it's over 65. The reason it's set so high is that older folks have had so much more exporure to so many different viruses and strains of the flu that provides some measure of immunity. (or so the current thinking goes)
But the VA (government run health care) got all the vaccine they needed for their clients.

mass extermination????? every single person who is born will die ... and this will continue until humans can discover immortality, will it not?jkisha wrote:There's a big difference between intelligent control of population growth and mass extermimation. the question is one of early death, methinks ... and i suspect that humans kill far more of the young through violence and war than nature does through disease.
besides, your world of many old and few young would be both depressing and economically impossible. intelligent, my ass.
I think you're probably wrong there unless you consider - like I do - that 'violence' can also constitute deaths that are wholly preventable.and i suspect that humans kill far more of the young through violence and war than nature does through disease.
Posted numbers from the various agencies from within the United Nations as well as non-governmental agencies (NGO's) estimate that ~25-30,000 children under the age of ten die every day on this planet. ~75% of those are from illnesses associated with untreated, contaminated water almost all in the form or water-borne pathogens. The remaining are from starvation and malnutrition.
