Team up for Mishkan theme camp?
I'm thinking about building a Mishkan theme camp.
I'm an Orthodox Jew - looking for other Jewish or Jew-friendly people who would be interested in building a Mishkan based on drawings of the Mishkan. We will be barbecuing a lot of Kosher meat inside :)
The idea is to make it as what scholars describe the Mishkan to have looked like as possible. Any Leviim out there (actually, I am really from the tribe of Levi) who want to help?
Hopefully the Mishkan will be a space at Burning Man for people who abide by Halacha and want a Kosher space to hang out in (of course, all will be welcome).

Ex libris Wikipedia:
Can we start snarking now?The fullest description of the Tabernacle describes an inner shrine (Holy of Holies) housing the Ark and an outer chamber (Holy Place), with a golden lampstand, table for showbread, and altar of incense.[1] This description is generally identified as part of the Priestly source (P),[1] written in the 6th or 5th century BC. Many scholars contend that it is of a far later date than Moses, and that the description reflects the structure of the Temple of Solomon, while some hold that the description derives from memories of a real pre-monarchic shrine, perhaps the sanctuary at Shiloh.[1] An earlier, pre-exilic source (E) describes the Tabernacle as a simple tent-sanctuary.

I was going to suggest he talk to Sput about the Detroit burners, but I guess Mishkan is not some sort of local slang for the Mitten state. (Of course Michigan is doomed to evolve into the Mitten State when the Kernel invades.)
A word of warning here: a few years back some girl wanted to set up an Israeli Theme camp, which is okay, but she started babbling about how wonderful Israel is and, well, even though no stones were thrown, we had a little piece of intifada here. There are jews running the gamut from practicing to cultural to "well, I have some jewish blood" around here, so this is probably a good place to start. I'm going to trust that you have been to the playa and that you've been in a theme camp before. Be sure to do it lightly and with some self-deprecation, self-restraint, rather than make it an overly serious project that you are utterly humorous about.
Now, as to your inquiry, Dougly:

No, we have to wait until he's had some solid answers and/or we've gone to the second page.Ugly Dougly wrote:Can we start snarking now?

Be careful. You can spend all your money in there..............................Oriental Visitor
It sounds more Reconstructionist than Orthodox, I call bogus on this one. But what do I know? I could go for a good briskit. Leviites are always welcome for a meal in my camp.
Sixty pillars and 48 boards seems a little much though, what with all the furniture, fixtures, copper nails, ropes, curtains, rods, sockets, goatskin, badger skin, tapestries, etc. You might check out mishkanministries.org, Dr. Hamilton makes reproduction stuff. He has a traveling museum but his itinerary is not posted.

Wow
The mechanics of actually creating a Mishkan reproduction are overwhelming. But I think I'm on to something. We'll see as time progresses.

In the wilderness, Moses was given the Law. The Ark was made to transport it. It was Moses and later Aaron who kept it, as they traveled.
Later, into the Ark, the Golden Pot of Manna and Aaron's Budding Staff was put. It was usually put on a cart for tranport.
King David brought the Ark into Jerusalem. It was stored in the Sanctuary, the back room of the Tabernacle (tent). The front room was the Inner Court. The Outer court was surrounded by a curtain 5 cubits high, about 7 feet. The Mishkan, the refuge was the entire area inside the curtain. The tent, Tabernacle, was only visited by priests of the tribe of Levi. The Ark was only visited once a year by the high priest, on the Day of Atonement.
Today, Temples contain the Law ( Torah) inside a cabinet ( Tabernacle). In some Catholic churches, the Eucharist ( bread and wine) is inside a Tabernacle ( some of gold). In Mormanism entire buildings are called Tabernacles. Today, most churches, temples, and places of worship are called sanctuaries or places of refuge. Clear as mud? Good.
But what do I know? My mom is Baptist, and my dad was Pentacostal. I never joined a church, but was circumcised when I was 13 and annointed in prison. I worship in my own way, like many Americans.
