Hey all! 21 year old dude from Blighty here! Not only will this first time at 'Burning Maaaayan' but my first time in the U.S.A, will be spending the week prior to the said festival in San Francisco. i understand that SF is around 4hrs away so i might head to reno for a few days before kick off. welcome!

S.F. is probably more like 6 hours, IIRC, from the playa.

learn your tips and tricks by reading the info on the main page, and, reading threads here.
There is a lot of info available in that way.....and, you can begin practicing your "radical self reliance"........

jump in here, it's fun, but, can be snarky if you seem lazy about helping yourself, first.

Greetings future Burner :D If you fly into SF another place you could hang before the burn is a campground ran by Burners where you can before and after gratis.

I think WD's campground is quite a way off track from S.F. to the Playa......

not that it wouldn't be a fun trip, just sayin, I don't think it's very close to the route.

Depending on the exact make up of your character, you probably will prefer San Francisco. The City has its problems, but it is by various measures, a world class city. Reno, well, it used to be there for divorce, and certainly there was silver boom stuff and of course the gambling and then it was a place to pick up supplies for farmers, and now it serves as a pick up things at teh last minute stop for people heading for the slopes or to hike, or to go to the burn or whatever.

Of course, if you want to plug into the people at either location who are making stuff for hte burn starting now is not a bad idea.

The springs are wonderful... but NOT during the event. The BLM puts them off limits as part of the permit. 50,000 people would ruin them, plus you have to stay within the trash fence unless you want to pay the in/out fees. I've been at other times, nice, yet I see how the springs could be potentially dangerous.

yeah.. few years ago some folks were out there and their two dogs jumped into the springs and boiled. One guy jumped in after them. He died at the scene & I believe his girfriend whom was trying to help him was badly burned. I'm not sure if she died or of ALL the details.. but it was UGLY. :: shivver :::.. poor dogs.

Some of those springs are hotter than others; others give off gas--odorous or poisonous. Definitely find out which are on and off limits for those reasons. Sure, a private spot would be nice. It might turn out there's a good reason to avoid a particular hot spring.
