And all the subways in LA. Who knew LA had subways??? The Bastards! I remember the traffic jams in the 70's...and vaguely, the fuel shortage. To think what could have been....Deb Prothero wrote:Noticed a lot of public transit being used. There was a time when that was done real well - convenient, timely and plentiful - before GM bought up all the street railways.

That's not always true JK, have you ever looked at a picture of yourself?jkisha wrote:Things always look better in pictures than they actually were.
In 1905, telephones were just 30 years old and not in widespread use. Mail was the main for of communicating and Western Union was used to get ugent messages across the country.
How did people drive without GPS units or use public toilets without a cell phone to their ears? There were no TVs, iPods, iPhones, internet, computers.
People actually had to talk to each other and basic courtesies were taught by the parents. Things were much nicer back in 1905, they just didn't know it.

Yes... that's exactly right! 1905 SUCKED in many ways. Ha! You think health care is bad now... and yeah a lot of public transportation was used, because there was little option of any private transportation. The Model T wasn't in production yet - and by the way, the automobile was seen in those days as a solution to the pollution problem! In 1905 many city streets were piled deep with horse shit.jkisha wrote:Things always look better in pictures than they actually were.

Wanna make a phone call? In those days the different phone companies weren't interconnected. You could only call people on your same service.
A 5-day work week with overtime and vacation pay? Nope.
Refrigerators became popular about 20 years later.
Music really stunk! And you had to play it on a wax-cylinder Edison Talking Machine... which did not have a subwoofer or 5.1 surround... there was no broadcast radio at all.
Bathing and general sanitary progress wasn't what it is today.
Hell I could go on and on... 100 years ago was no party.
