We've been picking up a couple sets each year. They're gone by the time the clearance sales roll around. This year we got a blue string and a blue net. You can wear the nets as ponchos!

Even after being cut when the street sign in front of camp was stolen, MyLarry was able to rewire the green string so it works. Tough little buggers!

I want a solar flamingo. I saw one once and didn't grab it, I've never seen them again.

They should make those in "My Size Barbies"; I know someone who would be a customer for life.

Strings of solar lights seem like an item that may not sell too well for stringing around a house as Christmas decorations. Target has oodles of them in all colors on the shelves and it may be a good place to check right after Christmas. I haven't used solar strings yet and wonder why these are needed since 2 dinky little AA batteries on LED strings last for the whole week and still have plenty of power for more use later.

Within easy driving distance of me are 8 different big box stores that sell these type of lights. I've checked them all and found that Home Depot and Target have the lights that I think would work the best. Lowes and Walmart get my thumbs down this year for playa-cool LED lights.

While poking around these stores after Christmas, check out some of the animated lawn ornaments and see if any can be de-Christmasized and modified for BM. Think of making new graphics, paint the frames and changing the lighting around to be playa appropriate. With all the cool animated stuff, there are unlimited possibilties for creatively lighting your camp. Also, (pardon my caps) YOU CAN MAKE LARGE, LIGHTED, ANIMATED CAMP MARKERS THAT CAN BE RAISED HIGH ABOVE YOUR CAMPING AREA.

Yeah, you'd think Utah wouldn't sell out f solar lights with our snowy winters, but they all do. The battery operated small strands are perfect for wearing, quite bright enough to light up a porto potty.

~newb takes note!

That's a great idea. I'm planning on wearing a turban at night, and I imagine they'd tuck into the folds really well.

GE led Christmas lights come in a display box that has "demo" lights on the front, a string of 5 or 6 with a battery pack, and a "try me" button. I've collected a few from the empty boxes as they sell through. check with retailers and see if they have any near empty of empty trays they might let you cannibalize. I cut off the button switch and just twist or untwist the ends for a switch. I put the battery pack in my pocket, and have a little string of lights hanging down and they have worked very nicely for night time "safety" accessories. This tip may be late for this year, but something to remember for next season, or for the clearance at big lots.

I like the battery ones for my bike.
The Target solar ones are GREAT! I have a small pine tree in my back yard that I decorated for Christmas. the solar charges even thru all the snow storms we've had. & they stay lit from about 7 pm to 3 am.
I believe they are the Phillips brand. MUCH better than the Chinese ones from e-bay.

We have a solar flamingo--my brother gave it to me for my birthday one year. We plunked it outside in the backyard where we could see it from the family room. Apparently it gets some--but not a ton--of light. (Our backyard is VERY shady).

Then we forgot about it. Until one night, there was this freakish, eerie RED glow out on the patio. Werewolf? Displeased spirit?

No, it was our solar flamingo, glowing dully.

Maybe not enough solar at our hose. Your mileage may vary... 8)

I like the solar paper lanterns that have come down in price and are now available on Amazon instead of just specialty sites.

AntiM, if you can't find what you want, it would be really easy to just wire up the solarcell and rechargeable battery from another style lamp to that battery-operated one.

The paper and fabric solar led lanterns get destroyed by the dust but mostly the wind. We didn't always take ours down, but even just using them was really tough on them.

Big Lots got some great solar and battery operated LED strings in for spring. I have a light up dragon fly on a lily pad which will become a cute hat. And crystal butterflies to decorate ... me!

my experience with Solar lights last year was not good. the first charge took 36 hours and the lights were dim and not bright enough. the solar panel got covered in playa dust and i think that made it less efficient. maybe the ones i bought were crappy.

this year i'm going with battery powered ones for consistency. like Shambala says it makes more sense.

Do you have any idea how long these will last on one set of batteries?

Non-solar option-search ebay for:

battery fairy lights 30 red (or blue, or white)
They're ~$5 shipped.

On the sets that we have, the LED's are 4" apart (10' total). In flashing mode they last a solid FOUR DAYS AND NIGHTS on 3 AA batteries.. In "steady" mode they start to dim pretty good on the second day.

Hi babysnakes,

I haven't done a full battery-run-down test but they seem like they'll last several nights on one set of batteries. They're very low wattage.
