Fire sculpture stuff, advice...
So, I have this hole in my back patio that used to house a 6 sided hot tub of an ancient design. After the hot tub was removed, we made it into a pond for a while and it died a mysterious demise of springing leaks.
I was thinking of the post here a while back that had a propane being pumped into a sand bed and had fire moving around on top of the sand bed. I would like to create something similar, and more permanent in this space on the back patio.
I have a natural gas line available from an old, built in bbq grill that used to live on the patio so a fuel source is readily available and just needs to be plumbed over to the hole. I also have electricity readily available at the location.
My vision, after discussing it with the wife for input, would be to redo the pond structure, but go ahead and cement in the walls and bottom this time instead of using pond liner and have "islands" that come up out of the water where the fire would be located.
I have a rough idea of what it would take to do this with propane, but I'm curious what extra steps would be necessary for using a plumbed natural gas line. So any advice there would be helpful.
Also, if anyone remembers the discussion about the fire sand thing I mentioned earlier, could ya point me in the right direction for info on it? I believe his website gave a pretty good over view on what went into the construction of it.

Im sorry I just love to still give my favorite Virgin a hard time...huba huba....
I would, if this were me...but what the hell do I know?
If me:
I would start by constructing the base(in the pit area)
3 wood framed little mounds. cover with chicken wire, with 5 mounts, metal strapping.
Coat the whole base and the mounds with cement.(leaving the metal straps utilizable.
Then get 3 of those rings (large burner rings). mount those to the mount points.
run your main line through the bottom of the main walls.
do a threeway propane fitting in the base of middle of pit.
Hook up all three burners.
Then hook that 3way to main.
Fill entire pit with sand and maybe even those cool prizmatic melted marbles(cover rings so they dont get any sand in the jets).
I dunno, in my head its seems like it would work????

Aw geez mom...
As for your idea, that's kind of what we are thinking.
With the addition of having water around the fire islands and fish swimming around.
And dinosaurs on the islands after we started messing with guidelines for proper decorations.

you could also bubble gas through water, and have a floating flame effect......you may need to isolate it from water the fish live in, not sure there.....but, it would also look neat, like a burning pond......or, part of it anyway......
The only reason I'd want to use propane for that, is, that if someone forgets to turn it off, or, turns it on without lighting, or whatever, you only lose a tank of propane......not days and days of natural gas......

a local Idaho Artist did just this last year - looked awesome. the gas would cycle through various pipes, and the flames would dance back and forth across the water (there were "lily pads" and "cat tails" that acted as pilot flames, constantly re-igniting the gas).ygmir wrote:you could also bubble gas through water, and have a floating flame effect......you may need to isolate it from water the fish live in, not sure there.....but, it would also look neat, like a burning pond......or, part of it anyway......
