snuggle factor: 10

Post by crackle » Fri Nov 14, 2003 3:58 pm

Imagine discovering hoards of exhausted people contentedly snoozing in the middle of the open playa. Above them is a peacefully glowing purple elwire "Zzzz" You too are exhaused and climb under the covers, curle up close with new friends and increase the snuggle factor with your own energies.

You know how you zip two sleeping bags to create a "double"? We could do that on a massive scale by encouraging peeps to contribute their own bag for the week.

Although I like the idea of people contributing their own sleeping bags, that is leaving a lot to chance. Perhaps it would be better to apply for a grant from BM and create a giant 50 person bed?

Either way, it is functional, interactive, cheap, and "artistic"

Just a brainstorm at this point. What do you think?

Does anyone remember the "Dream Machine" a few years back??? I always thought that was a worth while project that didn't seem to take too much money (relatively speaking of course).

For those that missed it, it was basically a large tent (just a roof, no sides, made out of a parachute) In the center was a large (approx 5 ft. tall and maybe a foot or two in diameter) cylinder with retangular holes cut into it, inside the outer cylinder was inner cylilnder with the same holes. The outer cylinder would rotate around the inner cylinder and when the holes were matched up a bright light would shine out. This created a gentle strobe effect said to recreate the brain wave patterns of REM cycle sleep. There were pillows, blankets and teddy bears surrounding it. It was an incredible thing to watch, people would sit down in front of the thing and just fall over and be in deep sleep. I would ride by in the morning and one day I think I remember seeing close to 100 people there.

So yeah, something like this could be fun!

I remember awhile ago when I was in highschool, every so often during a gathering up north, or in someones basement, it didn't quite matter where, a "puppy pile" would build.
Whenever you see a bunch of sleeping puppies in a box they are just lying everywhere using each other as pillows, limbs and tails all tangled up, we'd look like that. It usually started with a person or two watching t.v or a movie, someone would show up and just get comfortable. They'd lie down use another person as a pillow, stomach or thigh usually. and as people popped into the room, they would join in. It was never anything sexual, just a bunch of people lying there, being comfortable, and eventually all breathing in unison, it was very soothing.

We always just called it the spinny tent...like crack...if you even saw it out of the corner of your eye, you were screwed...it would lure you in from hundreds of yards away, and once you were inside, it was all over...

The thing that always amazed me is how quiet the motor was...the thing just spun in brilliant silence...

mmmmmmmm.....

I LOVED teh Dream Machine. If I remember correctly, it was a group of Canadian Burners who did it. I stumbled upon in when I was in a troubled, non-participatory mood, late at night. I was new to Burning Man and wasn't clear on the ettiquette, but after a minute of anxiety just decided to do what the other folks were doing and lay down and closed my eyes.

I think I only dozed for about 20 minutes, but when I resurfaced I was noticeably less troubled. Though brief and almost entirely without human interaction, it remains one of my fondest playa experiences.

ahhhhhhhh...

I can sleep practically anywhere at any time, which is something at least some of my friends seem to envy! 8)

(Of course, it is probably related to my problems with depression, which is something that they should NOT envy... [maybe I should keep that a secret...! ])

This sounds like a very groovy idea! And since this will be my second burn I will be very happy to sleep in a pile of people I don't know! Sleeping bags to the horizon! Ha, ha ha ha!
