What's goin' on? - San Francisco, Memorial Day weekend?

Post by RingO'Fire » Sat May 01, 2004 9:33 am

I, RingO'Fire, will be in San Francisco for the entire Memorial Day weekend (May 28-31) and would like to meet up with some of you other burners (jaded old timers, newbies, whatever) while I'm out there. I'll be in Monterey May 24-28 and would be up for meeting any burners down there too.

My schedule: Arrive SFO - Sunday afternoon, May 23rd
Depart SFO - Monday noon, May 31st

Monday, May 24th to Friday morn, May 28th - Attending scientific conference in Monterey, CA
Friday afternoon, May 28th to Monday morning, May 31st - Hanging out in San Francisco Bay area

How to contact me:
Post here or PM me. I'll PM contact info (hotel, email address, and/or cell phone #).

Some meet-up activities I would be into:

(1) Coming to a party, back-yard barbeque, beach fire, etc. (I promise I'll be on my best behavior, that is, unless misbehaving in general is de rigueur, in which case I'll be happy to join in the mayhem).

(2) Meeting up at a bar for beers, drinks, etc. (I'll buy the first round).

(3) Going "out on the town" for dancing, bar hopping, etc.

(4) Strolling, shopping, checking out the "you'd never know about this really cool place unless you lived here" hidden gems around S.F.

(5) Going on a hike

(6) Going on a photo expedition, such as to the botanical gardens in Golden Gate Park, etc.

(7) GOING OUT TO HEAR SOME MUSIC!. I've done a little research on the internet; here are a few of the musical offerings in the Bay Area over Memorial Day weekend:

(a) Interactive Peace Fair. Time: Saturday May 29, 11am-11pm. Location: Novato, CA. Tickets: $15 advance. It's an all-day peace gathering with lots of music. URL: http://www.peacegathering.com/p4phome.htm. Hamsa Lila (URL: http://www.hamsalila.com/hi_index.html) will be playing, among others. I've never seen these guys, but they sound totally awesome on their website Listen to this review too "SF Weekly marvels at the band’s ability to 'go from reverent to riotously jubilant in the space of a single jam.' According to the San Francisco Chronicle, “It’s as if they combine North African trance music with Burning Man energy and the jazz spirit of John Coltrane. Hamsa Lila plays intoxicating songs that are influenced by other traditions yet are original and authentic.”. Sounds to me like there's a good time to be had here.

(b) Bela Fleck & Edgar Meyer. Time: Sunday May 30, Matinee & Late shows, 3pm & 7pm. Location: Herbst Theatre, San Francisco. Tickets: $15 matinee, $20-$38 evening show. URL: http://www.sfjazz.org/concerts/spring04 ... fleck.html

(c) John Pizzareli, World-Class Jazz Guitarist. Time: Friday, Saturday & Sunday - May 28, 29 & 30 - Early & Late Shows at 8:00 & 10:00 on Fri & Sat; 7:00 & 9:00 Sun. Location: Yoshi's in Oakland. Tickets: $20 - $24.
URLs: http://www.johnpizzarelli.com/ & http://www.yoshis.com/

(8) GOING TO A BASEBALL GAME!. Time: Fri, Sat & Sun - May 28, 29 & 30 - 7:15pm Fri & Sat, 1:05pm Sun. Location: San Francisco, SBC Park. Tickets: $12 SRO behind center field to $65 AAA VIP "Charge you out the ass" lowest boxes behind home plate; decent (but too pricey) seats $28-$37. URL: http://sanfrancisco.giants.mlb.com/NASA ... sp?c_id=sf. The Giants will be in town, playing the Rockies, all three nights that I'm there. I'd love to go to a game if one (or more) of you guys would like to join me. If you're broke but would still would like to go a game, let me know, I may even buy your ticket! Plus, since the Giants aren't playing the Braves, I'll even root for them! "Go Giants! Woo hoo!"

My company is sending me to a week-long conference in Monterey the week before Memorial Day weekend, and I'll be staying over in San Francisco for the three-day weekend after the conference ends Friday morning. I'll be flying into SFO on Sunday, May 23rd and flying out on Monday, May 31st. Between Monday, May 24th and Friday morning the 28th, I'll be at the conference in Monterey.

The "Remediation of Chlorinated and Recalcitrant Compounds" conference in Monterey [I am not a geek, dammit!] is actually the premier international conference on methods of investigating and cleaning up chlorinated hydrocarbons (most of which are carcinogenic - such as dry-cleaning solvent (tetrachloroethene)) that have been spilled into the soil or groundwater (happens more often than you might think). The conference only takes place every other year; people fly in from all over the world to attend.

Anyway, I'd love to meet up with some of you burners. So, drop me a line and let's see if we can set up a time, location, etc. to meet, hang out, and have some fun!

Your fellow burner,
Steve

It looks like a great show. They are performing "Frizzle Fry" in it's entirety. Should be wicked!

Hey y'all!

Sorry it took so long for me to post this reply. This has been a pretty crazy week for me. Also, I've been really focused on trying to finish my "project" in the "youthful indiscretions" thread and honestly hadn't even noticed you guys' replys until today (Sunday around 4 am; "closing time" was about an hour ago - I'm still about half drunk, although not so drunk that I couldn't feed my "fucking eplaya addiction.")

Zona,
I'm all about some Primus! I've never seen these guys, but, let's go! I'll see them at the Bonnaroo festival (http://www.bonnaroo.com), about an hour's drive from my house, about two weeks after the Berkeley show, but I'm still game. Sunday is the 30th though. I leave on Monday the 31st at around noon.

CryptoHereFishieFishie,
I'm definately planning on going to the aquarium one afternoon while I'm in Monterey during the converence I'll be attending May 24-28th. I'd still like to hang out with some of you crazy-ass S.F. burners one of the following times: (7) at the Flambe Lounge on May 23rd, the day I get into town, or (5) sometime Memorial Day weekend, or (13) both times.

Tears,
If we go to the Primus show on Sunday May 30th, would love to have you come along, just as long as you get your (figuratively speaking) permission slip signed first. The show is not at a bar at all!

I HOPE TO SEE ALL YOU COOL, CRAZY-ASS MOTHERFUCKERS AT THE FLAMBE LOUNGE BBQ & PARTY ON SUNDAY, MAY 23RD!

I WILL DEFINATELY BE THERE!

I ALSO HOPE TO HANG W/ SOME OF YOU GUYS OVER MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND!

Later y'all,
Steve

Thank you!

I'd like to publicly thank everybody for showing me such a great time on my trip to San Francisco:

Dancing Tofu/manda: Thanks for meeting me up in San Fran at the Flambe Lounge and escorting me to the party. Thank you also for the stickers and the travelling music CD. DVD Burner especially loved it and wants a copy. I also had an awesome time over sushi and at Shrek II in Santa Cruz. Thanks mostly though for being your shining happy self!

DVD Burner/T: Thanks man! I had an awesome time hanging out and partying with you. Strolling around Golden Gate Park on our photo expedition was totally chill. I'll email you the "red" picture of you by the tree. I especially appreciate you taking me on the bar-hopping tour of San Francisco, followed by the 4am munch-fest at Mel's Diner (beats the hell outta Waffle House, which is all we've got around here at 4am). Thanks man, you're da bomb!

Zona the Stona (and Rich, Heather, and Leo too): Man, I had an awesome time partying with you guys! The Marin Headlands and Haight Street were great [I'm seriously thinking of ordering that "Whassup?" t-shirt over the phone from Lost Horizon]. I had an amazing time with y'all at the Primus show in Berkeley, in spite of ripping off half of my left big toe nail in the mosh pit. [For everybody else, note: mosh pit + sandals = bad idea; Actually, I didn't notice that I'd split my toenail down the middle when it happened, due to all the adrenaline and various "anesthetics."]. Man, that was so fucking awesome that Leo got back in the show too after getting kicked out [for...yep, you guessed it]. I ran into him right after he got back in [the dude that got Leo kicked out felt so bad that he went up to the box office and bought both of them new tickets; they both just walked right back into the show.] I asked where you guys were and he said he didn't know and then told me his story. Right after that, it got real "smokey" where we were standing for a few minutes. Then Leo headed into the crowd and I followed him. He took us right into the mosh pit. Right before we got there, I thought, "Oh dude, you're taking us right into the middle of 'the shit!'" Next thing I knew, there I was in the middle of it all. I totally loved it! Anyway, I had an awesome time with you guys! Tell Rich, Heather, and Leo I said "Hello!"

Smokey: Man, I'm so sorry I missed you dude. I was really looking forward to meeting you too. I'll see you on the playa though! I will be at the "eplaya meet n' greet" at the Barbie Doll Death Camp & Wine Bistro, Thursday, Sept 2, 6:00pm come hell or high water. I hope to see you there, bro!

Shitmouse: Man, I'm sorry I missed you too, bro! Hopefully, I'll see you at the Thursday eplaya meet n' greet on the playa.

technopatra: Mirror, mirror, on the wall, who's the the greatest one of all? Why, technopatra, that's who! Thanks for escorting me to the Flambe Lounge on the 23rd and introducing me around to everyone. Also, thank you for the sparkling conversation over tapas and sangria in The Mission. Please thank Michelle for me for sharing her experimental Austrian films [on 16 mm in TP & Michelle's home theatre!]. I definately preferred the first one though; the last one was kinda like, "OK, this was clever five minutes ago", but still interesting and thought-provoking nonetheless. Most of all though, thanks for just hanging out with me and being your most excellent self! (P.S., tell Michelle and your mom I send my love).

THANK YOU EVERYBODY! SEE YOU ON THE PLAYA!

Yeah, I do realize that the Phantom cuts are a bit odd.

DVD Burner Sir...

I think I have one or two of those CDs left. I had saved a bunch to give away in Exodus last year, but then I left too early in the day, and there was no line... PM me your addy, or I'll hang on to them and bring them back to the playa.
