hey all.
my name's alyssa, i am 21. orginally from the easy bay (hayward) now living in anaheim. i have heard of bm before, but last night my best friend brought it up and on a whim i checked out the site today. this will be my first burning man, and i have such an effing budget to go but i feel it it worth it.
i will be starting classes for my emt certification soon, and the class finishes 2 weeks before i head to the playa, so i hope to volunteer and keep everyone safe.
i was a raver back in the sf scene for 5 years...so the importance of community safety cannot be underestimated.
i can't wait!

Whats up my name is Mike. I'm from Alhambra CA (near Pasadena). I love drum and bass, hip hop, rock.. mostly classic rock, downtempo, dub/dancehall/reggae/roots/ska. I work in Downtown LA. I am into desert and outdoor parties. My buddies throw desert parties pretty often. I love the idea of burning man. I've had friends that went for the last couple of years, so I've seen hundreds of photos and I've been told stories of my buddies experiences. I'm expecting to have a life-changing, eye-opening experience this year. It is going to be my first year at BM. I've wanted to go for a the last 2 years but I never got my shit together in time. I'm 22 years old (soon to be 23). I'm so excited about BM that i've told myself that i'm going to buy something for the trip out of every paycheck between now and then. I've been lurking on this site for a the past month or so reading up and getting pointers.

Hello peepsies!
Hello, I’m Edith Ward. I’m 22 and living in Southeastern Kentucky. I’ve been lurking around here for a few days and this will be my first burn. I’ve heard of BM since a few years ago in passing. But this is the year that I shall go (hopefully to return) - my financial situation willing of course. I’ve done a lot of reading in the past few days and my head is spinning with all this information and all the info I still have to go through and yes, I tend to be a bookworm. I like to read and read and read about stuff; my problem (which I’m in the process of dealing with) is actually getting out and doing something with the ideas I form in this quirky brain o’ mine or as I like to refer to it - the pile of rocks with ideas scribbled on them that the gnomes in my head must pilfer through.
I’m drawn to the sense of community and artistic flair that BM has. Sometimes, I can be reserved and shy around people I don’t know, but with my co-workers it was different. I was able to be myself and not get the odd stares/comments I tend to get in public (even though those are pretty much subconsciously filtered out now). I don’t know, you just get to know people better when you work around them. That’s why I’d like to volunteer for a few shifts - get involved while having fun and inspiring others to do so as well.
I’m not quite sure what to volunteer for yet, maybe the BRCPO. I was looking at all the different theme camps from last year and oi, that’s quite a variety! I suppose I’ll dig around a little more and when I show up ask around and see if an opportunity presents itself.
Right now, I’m unemployed - I was laid off from my job in April - typical closing center and jobs shipped overseas story. Bleh.. such is life I suppose. I did technical support for ISPs - outsourcing and all that. I was angry at first, but then looked at it as an opportunity. I was planning on quitting in the fall anyway - I’ll be going back to college to get my B.S. in digital media. I haven’t had the chance to take too many art classes yet - not exactly popular career track here. Mostly just self-taught so far; the creativity and potential is there, but once again, manifesting my ideas into the physical world is the issue I’m struggling with. But Moonsocks does love a good challenge.
Anyways, that job was a major drain on my creativity anyway. It kind of warps your sense of trusting people and social interaction when 50% of the people that call in neglect to remember that the rep is a human being as well. I moped around for awhile after the center closed, but I knew it wasn’t doing me any good.. So I decided to get off my lazy ass by getting out and walking, working on some art projects, and “practic[ing] random acts of kindness and senseless acts of beauty” so to speak. I enjoy going out in the early morning and glamourbombing by drawing and writing quotes on the sidewalk and the walking track, leaving notes in books at the library and such. And when I found the BM website and the site for the Faerie Festival in PA, even more ideas started forming and coming back to me and I feel... well I feel alive again! I can feel my creativity reawakening. It's almost as if my muse has been on vacation for 1 ½ years, and now I can hear her calling... maybe she’s been out on the playa the whole time! ^_^
And yes, another tendency of mine is that while I’m usually reserved, if I do happen to open up, well I open up *a lot* and ramble too much. Hope you peeps don’t mind too much. ^^;;

Hello All,
I am Maya, although I don't mind being called Verb. I am 29, and I reside in a tobbaco country not much happens here small town in eastern north carolina. The slow pace here allows plenty of peace and time for personal reflection, and the sheer boredom inspires some to travel long distances to satisfy the souls need to spice up one's existence.
I am a lover of art, diversity & culture. I believe -Life is.. and it is lived, experienced and expressed in a countless variety of ways. I hope to spend my life learning and sharing as many of those ways as possible and I believe that BM sounds like a wonderful place to do that. I hope to make this year my first burn.
I managed to graduate from art school, but have yet to pay off my school loan. Have many talents & interests. Love to: Talk, sing, drum, sit quietly, dance, read, write, observe, grow herbs, sew, create and make things in various mediums. I have a tacklebox of makeup and like to paint patient people. I like making costumes too. Also give good hugs and back rubs and generally like helping people enjoy the moment.
Its nice to meet ya'll and I hope to see some of you on the playa. If I make it, I will be making some home grow herbal teas for new friends and plenty of good ole' fashioned sweet ice tea for my fellow southerners.

It is my understanding that the qualification for medics this coming year will be EMT with on year's 911 experience. I know that this is a disappointment to you, but it is better for the safety of the community. I'm not certain, so double check--I believe the pertinent e-mail is [email protected]
Even if you don't qualify this year, I'd encourage you to spend some time getting to know Emergency Services Department Personel. They are an amazing group of people, both the medics and the firefighters, and it will give you a good idea of whether you'll want to volenteer with them next year if you have the experience then. And just in case, take a copy of your certs with you. YOu won't be allowed to work without them. I commend your attitude about safety. I've seen some ODs on playa. I don't talk about that on the board so much, it doesn't really come up and there are also privacy concerns, but it can be pretty scary. You concerns show me that you may have the "right stuff" mentally, even if you don't have all the qualifications. By the way, some of the medics work raves off-playa, including my fiancee. Feel free to pm on e-playa or look me up when you get there.

Cravin’ Melon is a band (that was at one a semi-local band for me when I lived in western NC) from somewhere near Greeneville/Spartenburg. They did a song called “Sweet Tea” that brings back many fond memories of summer sun, red dirt roads, and BBQ. It is, as far as I’m concerned, required listening for any southern soul. Check it out on their CD titled “Red Clay Harvest”. I’m sure your favorite internet music shop will have a sound bite of it. The whole album is good. Hmmm... I guess this is cross posting since there is a music thread, Huh?... Ehh... well...

Yeah... tension. There was lots of internal tension in those years. Insulating myself from the emotions was an option, but one I couldn’t do and feel I was being true to myself. Rather than just “dealing with it”, I would have to shut down completely and not be who I was/am (if that were even possible... vivid imagination + keen empathy=lots of potential stress). Some are better geared for it than others and I understand why most of the EMS folks I know have such morbid senses of humor... it’s a coping mechanism (one I can appreciate and employ myself sometimes). I simply chose to find other ways of helping others, and so far so good.
Seems like you guys (yourself and soon to be hubby) have struck a balance with your selves, though. Good job. It's not a small task and it never ends... the balancing act I mean.

I’m Andy aka Alice
I had tickets in 96 I was only a 2 hour drive away but did not make it to burning man. Now 8 years later and 700 miles I’m going for my first time.
I feel dumb for not going sooner. Me, a self proclaimed Pyro and I miss BURNing Man year after year...*for shame*. There was always some excuse “the tickets just went up, I’ll get them next year when they’re cheap”.
Well I got my ticket, I got time off, I got a trailer, I got a few thousand linear feet of steel to make a shade structure (I won’t use all of it). I GOT NO EXCUSES. I’m only now realizing what I’ve been missing, and I suspect it is much better than that.

My name's Samantha, Sam, sometimes Penny, and often "hey you". I'm reeeeally interested in going this year, but I've never been before (I HAVE harassed a few folks on the LJ, though). I'm from Columbus, Ohio, graduating from Ohio State University soon with a BA in painting and drawing. A lot of folks just call me crazy, but I prefer "ambitious". I do martial arts, sing, play trumpet, get messy on occasion, write, read, talk a whole lot... well, I guess the best way to get to know me is just to hang around me.
