BRC is the foundation of human civilization on Mars

Post by phil » Sun Dec 13, 2009 2:34 pm

http://io9.com/372746/six-earth-cities- ... n-settlers

I don't know what io9.com is, but they say BRC provides a blueprint for life on Mars. along with some other locations like Antarctica, Dubai, etc.

They've photoshopped an aerial view of BRC into a photo of a Martian crater. We'll have a leave no trace event on Mars, I guess. I'd post the photo, but it's too large for this BB.

Maybe we can hire ourselves out to NASA as consultants on tips and tricks for camping on Mars?

Bring your own oxygen if you want to burn something.

Image spiffing by Stephanie Fox.
What is "spiffing"?

Kim Stanley Robinson's books on Mars and book on Antarctica are well worth reading.

She made the image look spiffier than it really was - she put a photo of BRC into a crater on Mars, for example.

So it's just a new name for "photoshopped 2 or more things together"?

If you were hip, you'd say "'shopped".

wow, spiffing is really a stretch of the phrase...

i can just picture it: the anniversary of the establishment of the mars colony will be celebrated yearly with fireworks, dollar-store blinkies, and a liquid-oxygen-fed effigy fire.

It's only hip if you shorten it to a non-verbal expression and no one knows what the fuck you're talking about.

So I guess spiffing qualifies.

So "photo-chopped" is right out?

You know you had a great Burning Man when you leave a crater visible from space.

Damn, I can barely afford the gas to get to Gerlach. I don't know that I can afford the oxygen too. What will this do to ticket prices?

i think that all big events have something in common... it all becomes a numbers game when things get complicated enough, wether its a mars colony or a festival ... perhaps the semicircular arrangement can have an actual physical justification, such as alignment to a solar collector or a radio dish?

I don't know what io9.com is,

I think that it's a science fiction site of some kind. I've skimmed it, before.

phil wrote:but they say BRC provides a blueprint for life on Mars. along with some other locations like Antarctica, Dubai, etc.

I noticed that the authors seemed fairly set on having their hypothetical Martian cities aboveground. Some might question the wisdom of this choice. Signs of a cave system on Mars have been found, those caves being suggested as a possible place to locate a shelter.

At least two virtues to this:

1. Protection from the much higher level of background radiation found on Mars, and the genetic damage it causes.

2. Protection from the weather. While Mars' atmosphere is thin, its winds are very fast, so even in that semi-vacuum, the elements can still do damage. When one is tens of millions of miles from the nearest factory, there's something to be said for cutting down on the wear and tear on one's house.
When in doubt, hit the ignore key. You'll seldom miss anything worth reading, and your blood pressure will thank you.
