Newbie from Florida... See you all in 2010!

Post by chris2010 » Fri Oct 23, 2009 10:44 pm

My name is Chris (36), I'm a photographer from Citrus Springs Florida. I'll be at Burning Man for the first time in 2010! I can't wait!! I'll be going with a friend who was there in 2009. I hope to be taking a lot of photos when I'm there! If you have any helpful photo tips for shooting on the Playa it would be greatly appreciated.

See ya in 2010!

That's cavern. All due to the karst topography.

I work in Sacramento and if you need any help with a rental vehicle (car or van) the owner of the AVIS dealership downtown is very burner-friendly and is a friend of mine. He will nearly always give you a better deal than his competitors and is not anal about the vehicles coming back dusty. PM me if you want the contact info.

Now that you have the tickets ordered don't forget. Read the survival guide over and over and over again. Welcome home!

What camera(s) will you be bringing, and how are you planning to keep the dust out?

I plan on bring my Canon PowerShot D10 & SANYO Xacti VPC-CA9. Both these camera's are waterproof, so I am hoping these waterproof seals will keep the Playa Dust out.

Some items are waterproof only when not in use.
Be sure to check.

I'm not sure what you mean exactly, but mine are waterproof when in use and not in use... If it makes it through the entire week there I will be happy. :D

A lot of controls don't seal when used.
This is common with watches.

LOVED the idea of a waterproof camera, and started looking into them, but all of the ones I liked had features I didn't care for (like rechargeable batteries, which haven't worked well for us in the past). So...on eBay, I found waterproof BAGS made for our camera models (well, a bit generic, but still). For $20, I can use the cameras we already have! So, thanks!!

I brought a Nikon DSLR and a point and shoot. Got the DSLR out once and noticed how quikly it was attracting dust and put it away. Used the p&s till it quit during the burn. This year will take a Panasonic Lumix water, dust and shock proof. It looks like it's armored. It's small, takes great 12 mp pics and HD with sound movies. I don't live behind my camera anymore, but I do like a shot here and there.

wow! that panasonic lumix looks perfect for BM! how much did you pick it up for? how is the audio, I've been looking for a new pocket sized camera, but I like one that can get decent audio at concerts.

Ahhh, I see now... All the controls are sealed... I've tried them both underwater :)

The batteries are the only thing that concerns me too, but I will have to see what happens out on the Playa. I've thought about using a waterproof bag, but I don't want to bring my expensive cameras with me to start with, so hopefully things will work out with these cameras :)

Yea, that is why I did not want to bring my Canon DSLR, and I did not want to lugg it around either.
