Just looked up mistletoe in Wikipedia to find out the origin of the kissing custom.
Wikipedia says: Kissing under mistletoe at Christmas
According to a custom of Christmas cheer, any two people who meet under a hanging of mistletoe are obliged to kiss. The custom is of Scandinavian origin.[14]
In Norse mythology, Baldr was a god of vegetation. His mother, Frigga, prompted by a prophetic dream, made every plant, animal and inanimate object promise not to harm him. But Frigga overlooked the mistletoe plant — and the mischievous god Loki took advantage of this oversight, tricking the blind god Höðr into killing Baldr with a spear fashioned from mistletoe. Baldr's death brought winter into the world, until the gods restored him to life. Frigga declared the mistletoe sacred, ordering that from now on it should bring love rather than death into the world. Happily complying with Frigga's wishes, any two people passing under the plant from now on would celebrate Baldr's resurrection by kissing under the mistletoe.

Hey, Deb, thanks for the info on Mistletoe.

As for me, mistletoe, shmiseltoe, smooching is good, especially when accompanied with a hug at any time of the year.

Maybe the Vikings needed to have a symbol to encourage smooching and lay down their weapons for the season of light.

Otherwise I very much agree with you, magicmarty.

didn't see any mistletoe, is that what you get when you kick an icbm?
Yesterday we had a spare the air day in the Bay Area, no fireplace fires allowed. We watched the yule log burn on the t.v., one channel had a modest fire, the other had a blaze going, with Santa sleeves adding logs and logs and logs!

Turkey sandwiches tonight, and there's a really tough puzzle toy to figure out. Everyone has spent hours on it and it's quite compelling. 6 colors, 6 sizes of caps in each color to put on 6 sizes of pegs... 36 pegs, and each row has to have one cap of each color, different sizes, so the whole top of the puzzle is level.

nawp, I'd say we need no symbol to encourage smooching........and, in winter, there's not much to "go a Viking" on anyway.........tough sailing and all...........

Baldr was quite the fellow, really..........sort of the "Jeebus" of Viking legend........pre-dates the carpenter, though.....

Wow. I don't know what to say about those vikings. That running around the oars and falling was no joke. that water's just above zero, and it wouldn't take long for hypothermia to set in. And, the Vikings would not have conquered England, Ireland and chunks of France if they really rowed like that.

Harumph. I didn't say tht there was anything wrong with that, I just said that is was odd. I'm getting two different views, a historical view and a view of the resonance that "vikings" still have. And no, Norwegians can be pagans--that was not the issue.

Mistletoe was a sacred plant to the celts as well. When other plants lost their green in winter, the mistletoe was still green and that was impressive. Also, the Oak was a sacred plant and ceremonies were performed in oak groves, and the mistletoe was part of that.

Why I dind't capitalize "celt" and did capitalize "Oak" is a good question. I'm still working on that.

Supposedly "misteltoe doesn't grow in oak" but you see them in N California in oak trees all the time - sometimes in conjunction with Spanish moss!

Latent Capitalization. I see it all the time. It happens to people who post on bulletin boards a lot. It is becoming epidemic. There is a cure for it however. But it is slow. It involves the frequent re-examination of the immediate past. Mist folks don't want to take the time needed for the cure to work and just learn to live with it.

I'm okay, goathead. Just read your Christmas story. Sounds like you had a good time. How wonderful that you were able to be home for Mona and your mom. I like reading good news stories.

Hey Box Burner; Happy holidays to you.

It's a curse to have an eye for the details of spelling and grammar, eh? I used to get paid to proof read the newspaper just as it was going on the press. Would get it down to 3% error rate over the course of a year. But it can be a curse to see every error. I think Crypto was wondering if she had done this intentionally so left the capitalization in place.

Hey there GH..........

of course, I'm always responsible for my drinking...............hahahaa

Been on the backhoe for two days, making an underground air conditioner.........

Hey Deb,
I suppose I didn't announce the dark booth in the corner......but, just sort of figured it's always something most bars have............some things, in a bar, just appear.........and, we discover them..........at least that's how it works for me.

Well,
it's raining, perfect time to be 6' deep in a trench installing culvert pipe............
