Gay Friendly Camp
Gay Friendly Camp
Ill be heading out to BM this year for the first time...probably by myself. So I'm looking to find a gay friendly camp. Even better would be if there are any Bear groups anyone knows about. Help me out gang.

Comfort and Joy is pretty queer as I understand it.
A word here. BRC is probably one of the most gay friendly cities in the world. It's not that there's no homophobia--that monster does rear it's head. But most people range from "don't give a shit about your sexuality" to "hey cool." And sex isn't the coolest thing that happens there. I don't know why you're looking specifically for a gay friendly camp; I'm pretty damn sure that it's no issue anywhere in Terminal City, for instance, even though most there are more or less "straight." And I absolutely understand that if you want to be sure of the people in your near orbit not being uptight or offended before you let loose then I get it. Just be open to not having to carry around your defensive posture when you are at the event.

I am gay and next year will be my fifth time in brc. Astro pups is good for some woof woof. comfort and joy is good for daytime gaytivities, and night time frollics. I would recommend camping in the red light district if you end up not camping with a group. While my camp is mostly straight, we usually have about 7 gay people in our group (100) and you are more then welcome to PM me with any questions. we are always open to new people if the is a mutual connection and we usually camp near comfort and joy. this year we were only 35 yards away. what fun that was!!!!! As stated above if you are going just for sex, you are in for a shock, if you are going to have a great week meeting fun happy open wonderful people, then you will have a blast!

If there's one place a straight guy might likely experiment, it's Burning Man.klondike_bar wrote:homosexuality can be found without too much difficulty all over BRC. Even if you make the 'dreaded mistake' of approaching a staight guy, you will probably be dealt with very nicely.

Burning Man is an extremely "gay friendly" event. I mean hell, it's based out of San Francisco.
I'm a straight guy that's been "approached" by gay guys in BRC - all I ever do is let them know "sorry, I'm a straight guy... but here, have a frosty Captain Goddammit margarita!"
I'm pretty sure that's about how it will go with most burners.

Black Rock City is the gayest city on earth... Statistically speaking that is. The 2006 census lists 7% of the population identifying as gay and another 5% as sometimes gay. The percent identifying as biseuxal is 11% and another 17% as sometimes bisexual. So you're looking at a minimum of 16% self-identified LGBT. That is far more than San Francisco, or Santa Cruz, or anywhere else for that matter... Its pretty frickin gay...
As far as gay camps, definitely AstroPups for the bear/furry action (also just a nice camp), Comfort and Joy is the most mainstream gay camp (its like the Castro in San Francisco moved to the desert, for better or worse), and my personal favorite gay camp is Celestial Bodies.... great people, great bar, great location....very friendly and inclusive....its also not exclusively queer which is nice....

Moonbow Camp returns!
We're a gay quiet camp near the 3pm plaza, and host the Gay pride parade every year. Next year, we'll have some fun daytime activities and spiritual events too. Check us out on facebook and our events there. Last year we introduced the replacement for stiffy lube, a new club called the Downlow club; it MIGHT return with some events in 2010.

I stopped by the moonbow camp on a few occasions in 2009. Very friendly group as well as Camp Stella, Celestial Bodies, Comfort & Joy although I didn't get to stop by AstroPups.
As far as Burning Man being gay-friendly that's an understatement!

True that. In late August, it's not rare to see that DPW work crew with the school busses that park in the Castro and kidnap denizens for the week so that the balance tips even further gay.Tamino wrote:As far as Burning Man being gay-friendly that's an understatement!

Re: Moonbow Camp returns!
I met a couple of really nice guys from the Downlow Club last year at the Critical Dicks March. I intended to take over some of the extra CDs I made for the event because I knew they were in the Booby Bar neighborhood but never made it over -Anpu2001 wrote:We're a gay quiet camp near the 3pm plaza, and host the Gay pride parade every year. Maybe I'll get them over this year if they make it back.

As a member of Comfort & Joy I'll apologize in advance for our radioactive mooping.Simon of the Playa wrote:OMG! have you HEARD what the QUEERS are doing to the SOIL?
making it radioactive.
i swear.
i read it on e-playa, it must be true.
really.
So here's the deal with gay camps on the playa: there are a lot of them.
Until last year the easiest way to find them was to go to Avalon Village. They broke up into smaller camps last year though (didn't like Village placement zones.)
So here's a list of many gay camps that have been to the playa in the past:
1) Stiffy Lube (gay sex... period)
2) Comfort & Joy ( year round http://www.playajoy.org )
3) Astropups (bears/cubs)
4) Celestial Bodies (art fags)
5) Vietnamese Iced Coffee Camp (gay/gay friendly serving coffee daily)
6) Yes Please (friendly chill space, nice peeps)
7) Camp Stella (Queer NA, Alch Anon camp)

And many more that I may or may not know about...
To find contact info just look them up in the guide in this link. Almost all of these camps have existed for years and are well established returning camps:

We are not a theme camp but we are a friendly gay group of guys mostly from Southern California. Most of us are from a gay outdoors group called The Great Outdoors. Last year we were 15 with guys from Florida and Alaska as well. Check out the calendar on our website. http://www.greatoutdoors.org/ps/calendar.shtml

Yes it was. And if someone showed up with that, we'd give them an eyeful. There can be a sort of territoriality around avatars. I think they function as instant recognition signals when we read threads. So if someone bounces back between 2 or 3, we regard all as belonging to the person in question.
You're right, it's not fair.
On the other hand, we're not going to do a thing about it and the interwebs are full of odd photos.

So 5% are sometimes interested in members of their own gender as well as members of the opposite gender. And 17% are sometimes interested in both genders in addition to members of the opposite gender.alt12 wrote:The 2006 census lists.. 5% as sometimes gay.. 17% as sometimes bisexual.
Hmmm, I'm not wrapping my head around that one.
Heavy on preparations, light on expectations.
